I have been painting non-stop since Sunday night. I am using muscles I haven't used since High School!

What started out as a simple faucet replacement has turned into a full fledged kitchen reconstruction. My DH, God bless him, even hosed off our grungy ladder so that I wouldn't have to strain my neck painting the top cupboards-

Anyone else doing home projects before the snow flies?

I get "raised" eyebrows after a scolding for my less than enthusiastic efforts at cleaning my house in the summer- when I counter with "Winter is the time for cleaning-I am going outside!"

Makes perfect sense to me too Sandra- :)

Makes perfect sense to me Sandra. In Spring, I'll knock people over to get outside. LOL If they want to stay inside, fine, but get outta my way!LOL Then in the Fall, I want a clean, fresh nest to cozy up in....with a good book, a soft lap-robe and a nice hot cuppa!

I'm like you gals...I have more impetus to Spring Clean in the Fall than I do in the Spring! What's up with that? I guess in Spring I just want outside and in Fall I face up to what I left inside when I went outside in the Spring. Does that make sense at all?

Thanks for the feed-back Cindy. hmmmm....roasted chestnut....sounds pretty. How long did it take you to get "The Christmas Song"(NatKingCole) out of your head once you painted? ....or is it still there....or did I just plant it back in there??? LOLOL Sorry 'bout that! hahaha ;)

Judy--I don't know why it took so long to paint my bedroom--I guess because I was using s brush instead of a roller. Plus I kept thinking it would look better when it was done, but I still didn't like it. I like the idea of pumpkin spice color--my br is now a color called roasted chestnut and I love it.

Cindy, you sound just like me, I want to do this myself. Good thing too...... DH is a busy man. hahaha Ya I used reg. paint too, mostly because of funds. But I still want to try milk-paint. Just wish one of yuns had already tried it and had a story for me. haha And you think 12 years is a long time, it's been 20 for my whole house, so, ya, it's waaaaay overdue. When DH bought this place back in 1990, he got a great deal on 5 gal. buckets of the color "sand" so he and his buddy did the whole house. Like I saidbefore, it's a duplex. So now I want a change. Different color rooms. So far I have the sunny yellow bathroom. I'm thinking of maybe a sage green L-room and I haven't decided about the bedroom yet. My Aunt did her bedrooms in a spicy-Pumpkin and it was gorgeous. I didn't think such a color would be good in small rooms, but I was amazed. Cindy, why did it take a year to paint your bedroom. I thought I drug my feet. LOL

Must be a case of paint fever going around--I started painting my living room this evening. It's been twelve years since it was last painted, and well, I was tired of dusty rose. So I went with a teal blue-gray. And yes, it's the smelly kind of paint, partly due to lack of availability of lo-voc paint and money (or rather, lack of it LOL). I thought I had a paint tray in the basement but I can't find it. I have a nagging suspicion that the guy who came to take away my old metal throw-away junk this past summer also took the paint tray--it was metal, and he was in my basement. Oh well, I guess I can splurge on a new one--I just hope I can get this all done by Thanksgiving. It took me a year to paint my bedroom and then I didn't like it. I like the color it is now, but my brother painted it for me--he used to paint for a living. But I want to do this project all by myself. It's a farmgirl thing, I guess. :)

I've thought about using milk-paint Hallie, read the whole article on it a long time ago. Should read it again. Has anybody else used it? How did it turn out? Oh...and I married my Landlord, we live in a duplex (up & down) and he doesn't care what I do to the house! hahahaaha I know....we can't all do that! lol

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I've got my walls all measured. Now it's time to start moving furniture and buying some paint. Surely this will help keep cabin fever away this winter? :) I saw the Yolo at one of the box hardware stores, but it's a drive. I'm planning to stick with my neighborhood store in case I run out of paint. They have a "no-VOC." I'd rather do milk paint but I think my landlord might not know what to do with that after I move!

Hallie I used a no VOC paint in our old farmhouse last fall. It's called YoLo colorhouse. Two women who had done painting came up with their own formulas(no voc's and more pigments) and went into business. I think they are based in Idaho(?). At least closer to you than me here in KY. There was only one place in Ky where I could get their paint. But they have a free color consultant who recommended some colors. Great paint! :)

Fresh paint is so...refreshing! (For lack of a better word.)

Deborah, thanks for sharing your low Voc experience, I was a little worried about my nose being cooped up in a fresh painted home this winter -- and for Mother Earth, of course. :)

Good luck with the projects, everybody!

WOW! This must be painting time for sure. I painted my upstairs bathroom. It started as a remodel, removing a huge vanity, putting in a pedestal sink and new hardware and cabinets. I too used muscles I had forgotten about. My backs of my legs were sore for over a week. Ladder climbing works every part of the leg. I thought, as a person who climbs stairs daily, all day, I was in good shape. Hah...not so Sista's! Now if I can just keep myself going. I have lots of rooms to paint this year. Been puttin' it off too long.
How funny, I used 2 coats of kilz and butter yellow paint too. You're right, so cheerful!

I finally finished up our painting project. It took two coats of Kilz last weekend and two coats of paint this one. I painted the room a butter yellow and it looks so bright and cheerful now. It really makes me smile whenever I walk in there. That makes the achy muscles worth it!

Good luck or congratulations to every one on their painting projects!

It's nice to hear about all of your nest improvements!

Have any of you tried the new low VOC or eco-friendly paints? I want to repaint my living room but I rent so I don't want to do anything the landlord can't easily paint over. I'm assuming this rules out milk paint and like. Do the low VOC paints really not smell terrible? Any one have experience with them? I saw the Yolo low VOC paint at Home Depot isn't much more than their house brand.

Melody, did you paint all of your cupboards too? Wow!

I started painting my hallway this summmer when it was too hot outside but then Fall came and I had to get out there and take advantage of the cooler weather and do some landscaping, detail my car and clean the garage. So, the hallway is 1/4 done with paint cans and supplies still sitting there. The car got detailed and that's done at least but car belongings are still sitting in garage. I got some more done on landscaping but now it's supposed to rain for 3-5 days on and off and I've gotten quite a bit done in garage and filled a whole garbage can with junk but need to go sew and finish some pillow wraps for a class I'm giving next week....this is how messes are born! Some days it feels like 5 steps forward and 10 steps backward but hopefully persistence will win out and it will all get done...before I die! LOL! It keeps me off the streets and out of trouble so I guess that's good thing.

Would love to re-paper the living room, but money is too scarce right now. So I'm going to paint the guest bathroom a soft pale sage green instead. Have been de-cluttering like mad and still have too much junk!

Audrey,

I am already thinking about the great room and just off the great room clearing a path up the "maids" staircase! Right now I have all of my soap supplies (those huge drums of oils, wooden molds, tons of various sizes of kraft gift boxes, etc.) inching their way up the back stairs-Oy what a mess!

It's kinda funny....every time I see an episode of "Hoarders" I go into a panic mode and start chucking stuff! Maybe I should just turn off the TV!!

"tweaking."

It's been a real transformation and I am proud of myself for taking the bull by the horns and getting it done-

Yes...it's hard to have bathrooms and kitchens torn up for very long because we're always using them! Unless you have backup ones. I have 2 bathrooms but only one kitchen! Where's those pictures Melody? Before and afters are so cool! I'm hoping ti will inspire me to do my kitchen! LOL!

Melody, I laughed when I read your project started as a simple faucet replacement. Reminded me of my bathroom remodel. I had to replace a toilet that developed a crack and that led to...since I have the toilet up I might as well put in a new floor...the floor led to a new cabinet...the cabinet to a new counter top...new sink...new faucet...before I knew it I had a complete brand new bathroom! But this was all years ago. No projects for me this year.

Have fun nesting!

It's so strange ladies---I have been in a tizzy trying to get this project done before the snow...

Our winters are harsh and very long and the thought of a freshly painted and organized kitchen means a lot to me. Funny, but I feel just like a mother robin getting her nest ready!

Me too am always doing stuff around the house. I am planning on moving my furniture again. My sofa is now facing my BIG huge windows, nice but....I have a very VERY nosy male neighbor who likes to stick his head around the little wall and look inside in the eve! Now, he has a little brain disorder, so I don't let it bother me too much...but once in a while it does. And if I turn my sofa around he can't see me and I can't see him sticking his head around lol .

Sandra, I have Graves disease too and it really bothers me now I am getting older (did I say that...really...getting older? YIKES!!)

I am always doing "projects" and mine go on forever since I have RA and Graves disease I tire easily so I can't "go at it" non-stop like I used to in my younger days but persistence wins out and I get things done....eventually. Right now it has cooled off and is beautiful outside so I just finished detailing my SUV ...that took 3 days and I washed all the windows inside and out and now I am focusing on cleaning and organizing the garage and a landscaping project before the rains come starting Friday night they're saying. I started painting my hallway but had to stop to take advantage of the nice weather outside before the winter sets in although here I can still work outside then...it's the summer heat that keeps me in. I love hearing about others projects...makes me feel motivated and not like I'm the only one working on things. Plus, it keeps these old joints of my limber! LOL! Yes...pictures please! You go girl!
