Posted - Oct 04 2010 : 06:39:18 AM Ok....patience is not my best asset! I wanted a fireplace mantel but couldn't wait to hire a carpenter, save up the money....yada yada yada...I wanted it NOW! So, here's the "before and after". It's still a work in progress....I may have a few items to paint like the white cupboard but it's working and I had a fire in the fireplace last night and kept checking the surrounding pieces to ensure there weren't any "hot" spots. I didn't even have to get my hammer out! I love "before and afters" so if you have any to share please post!

I don't want to be "Debbie Downer" here, but I wouldn't show those pictures to you home insurance company. I'm pretty sure that the clearance from combustables is 18-36 inches.
