OK, I went to a food conference today in St. Louis. One of the speakers was from Monsanto (Boo! Hiss!) This guy tries to tell me that chickens raised in a factory farm have a better "quality of life" than chickens that are allowed to live naturally (access to the outdoors, allowed to forage for themselves, etc.) He used terms like "misunderstanding", "fear", "ignorance", "misleading", "mistrust" to describe how people like you and me feel about Monsanto and their strongarm tactics. How stupid does he think we are? Another person suggested to an organic farmer that organic farmers should adopt genetically modified organisms. "But then it wouldn't be organic" was the reply. What planet are these people living on? The Monsanto guy talked about "unscientific" propaganda designed to cause people to question corporations like Monsanto....excuse me??? Informed opinion is NOT propaganda. Fortunately, not everyone sided with the Monsanto cheerleader. Anyway, I just had to vent. To hear these people talk is just unbelievable.

Monsanto exists because they get lots of support from the government. They're the people who brought us Agent Orange.

Prariehawk- I was thinking the same thing!

I think science can be a wonderful thing, but the GMOs are just too scary and people are using the technology without understanding the full ramifications of what these things are going to do to the ecology.

IF the GMOs were always completely sterile and had no ill health effects, then I don't think I would have as much of a problem with them- but that isn't the case. I really wish that there were stricter testing guidelines on GMOs. :(

Debbie--I think Monsanto wants to appear "green" because it's so much in vogue now. They're not stupid, just devious. Sort of reminds me of a passage in the Bible where Paul says "Even Satan masquerades as an angel of light".

Monsanto is so evil and devious and they are liars and they treat us like we're stupid monkeys who follow the pack, that pack being Monsanto!!!

No offense to monkeys. I love God's creatures.....just the way He made them.

Been hating on Monsanto for years now and see no reason to stop now. All that they care about is money and ego.

So how do the "little people" stop such a monster as Monsanto?
Every morning at 9:00, I watch a program on television (PBS) called "America's Heartland". It is a wonderful and inspiring show. It has segments about farmers large and small who are making a real difference in agriculture (many organic)all across the United States and beyond. But my biggest problem is that this show is sponsored by Monsanto....UGH! Why in the world would they sponsor a program that goes against everything they believe? Or is it just another bit of propaganda to make people think that they are with us all? Who is the CEO of Monsanto anyway?

I've been hating Monsanto for about 40 years. They've gotten bigger and more powerful. My hatred and ranting has done no good. They are here to stay, with their GMO seeds and law suits to put honest farmers out of business. Bottom line, we have a choice to opt out and support agriculture with a conscience. This year DH and I joined a CSA and get a huge box of produce every week. They use open pollinating seeds and are certified organic. We have loved it, and feel very good about our choices. We also sought out grass-fed organic beef. We vote with our dollars and will continue to do so. I remember the catch-phrase of the 60's, "Better living through chemicals". Can't remember if it was Dow or 3M, or Monsanto. But I can say I'm reading labels, making choices, and doing what else I can. I don't waste my time and energy hating anyone anymore. It just isn't worth it.

Cindy, I completely agree with you, big corporations, small corporations, they all get paid the big bucks to try to sway us, no matter if it's wrong or right, or going to endanger us.

Yes, Monsanto does seem to be the satan of agriculture. The guy talked about how Monsanto has a mission to "feed the world" while conveniently ignoring the fact that this is the company that invented the seed that commits suicide. I guess they really do want to feed the world, though, because he who controls the world's food supply controls the people. One of his goals is to "build confidence" among the public concerning Monsanto's research and reputation. If they were on the level to begin with, there wouldn't be any need to "build confidence". I agree with him that most Americans need a better understanding of science, I wish I'd taken more science in college, but it doesn't take a PhD to figure out that this corporation is only interested in money and power. The sad thing is, I know people who've worked for Monsanto and they really don't know what this company is all about.

I totally agree with you Cindy! I sometimes ( ok, all the time) have to ask myself, "do these people even have there heads screwed on right?". Monsanto is a very sick corperation. I'm glad not many people sided with the monsanto cheerleader.
