we have our first big forest fire for the season here. started from dry lightening. some homes evacuated. it was one fire then 40 mile winds stirred things up and then there was 3 fires. now the fires are one fire again. 5500 acres so far. we are on call to help a friend who lives closer. the fire planes go right over our house. they are huge and housed at our airfield. the sun is fire engine red in the evening as the smoke flows across her. the air is heavy with retardant. there are folks working. this is what the fire fighters wait for. it is sad the forest is burning. it is good it is burning. cleaning up the forest floor. opening the pine cones so the seed can germinate. folks are getting to earn a buck or two. we are supposed to cool from 90s to 80s on the weekend. this will help them get it under control. from our place the plume of smoke is right in front of the middle sister mountain. we can see it flow across the sky heading north. well i am glad there are jobs for some from a natural fire. happy days sherrye

glad they are getting it more contained! Hope it keeps getting better and I hope some of the safe areas to burn get cleaned out.

Sherry, containment does not mean that they are going to be able to put it out, it means they have pushed it away from certain areas, or protected certain areas. They will let it burn under a watchful eye in areas like that, to clear or clean burn all the dead fall, and destroy the beetles and other diseases in the trees. Time will tell on what if anything more they will do, weather factors and the things that are in the path of the fire, even miles and miles away.

they are saying 50 percent contained tonight. it does bring up the question...if its not threatening homes or structures this seems like it could be a good thing. to clean the forest. well i still can not see the 3 sisters mountains. usually they are in our visual from our windows. still smokey. but i think its all good happy days sherrye

Oh my word sherrye! I hope they get it contained- but I know what you mean about the pine forest needing to burn. It's always such a balancing game when it comes to fires and homes.

thanks girls for your concern and support. its windy tonight. gust to 40 mph. so we shall see. it is 6000 acres now.the concern is we have national forest out there. it is pine trees that are dead from beetle kill. its needs to burn but boy what a fire that would be. very huge and out of control. also this was started from dry lightening. thats what they think. we have had 3 spot fires from embers so far. the sun is so red at evening. smoke has cleared here some. so i can see the glow from our house. its still a long way away. they think it will go toward the forest now. i hope your son is doing well teresa. its been super hot here. hard on the fire fighters. well big days here so off to bed. happy days sherrye

We're getting a bunch of the haze here. I really hope they get it contained soon, but at the same time, it is needed for the ecosystem. My hope is that no lives are lost.

Sherry, hope things are going better tonight and they've got more of a handle on things. That was our biggest fear when we lived in Central Or., but we were in the middle of a national forest, so very woodsy, alot more threat. Give those air tankers a salute when they fly over, they have a heck of a job, as do the rest of those tireless firefighters. Stay safe, be ready to run, and keep us posted if possible!!

Sherry, plese keep in touch, and let us know you are safe, and my son was sent your direction, and when I spoke to him for 30 seconds, told him I have friends up there, so make sure you all kick that fires butt...

I live near Sisters, too & the air is so thick. have had the worst migraines from the air. I can't wait until this is contained. feel badly for all the people who've had to evac.

Sherry, this was started on purpose? I hope it doesn't get out of hand. And that all the fire fighters stay safe. And you too. You'd have way too many animals to have to move real fast.

Hi, Sherrye. I was up at Kelsay Valley this past weekend, above Lemolo Lake, and I thought the air was smoky, but I couldn't smell it. Just looked hazy. I wondered if there were any fires close. Now I know.

Stay safe friend, those monsters sometimes will turn with out reason, so stay ready to run if you have to...remeber that the smoke is really hard on your livestock, and water misters will help with that.

My dad used to be a fire jumper in wyoming when he was in his 20s. He loved the job but hated the destruction and the lost homes. He was a cutter. He helped cut out paths around houses and buildings to help save them and to direct the fires to rivers and stuff so they'd burnout quicker. He also helped reseed the areas to prevent wash out of the soil. That was his favorite part. Well, that and ridin in the helicopters!
