I disputed about half the items on my credit report- and most of them got removed! My credit jumped +32 points in just six weeks! I still have more disputes to do.
Basically if the companies can't provide documentation substantiating a debt or a negative record- they can't report to your credit!! It's amazing and it might mean that by this time next year we might be able to get a mortgage!! That would be amazing since we already pay as much as a mortgage for our rental! ($700 a month!)
Between paying off bad debts and disputing I am hoping to fix my credit over the next few years!! Here's hoping!!

Mailorder companies that will give you credit, like book clubs and craft clubs, etc, are notorius for giving inacurate info to the credit report companies, also everytime a company checks your credit, but doesn't open a credit line, that will hurt your credit also.

Sarah- I have identity theft protection through Trilegiant Corp so they did all the hard work for me. I just called and told them what I wanted to dispute and they filed the paperwork for me. However you don't have to have a service do it for you. You can contact the three credit bureaus (Equifax, TransUnion, Experian) and file a dispute paper with them. The reporting companies have a certain amount of time to respond to a dispute or it gets taken off!

Good for you, Alee! That's what everyone needs to do. I think they stick some really stupid charges on the bills that we never question. I hope you get where you want to be real soon. Jenna at www.coldantlerfarm.com is doing some "lessons" on how to get your credit built up and on how to look for and buy a farm. She did it herself in less than a year. I love her blog. Very interesting. Keep it up. You'll get there.
