Posted - Jul 02 2010 : 10:28:20 AM My husband got a job offer for Greenville texas which is up above dallas. I was wondering what its like around there. Escpecially from a farmgirls point of veiw. We won't be able to make it down there until later this summer and i just had a few questions. How is it for growing things there? Do you get a lot of rain? Also, is land expensive there? We only need about 5 acres or so. Also, my husband would like to know how the hunting is? I'd really appreciate if anyone could help. Thank you....Nieki |

Posted - Jul 08 2010 : 11:03:06 AM Well, any acreage would be nice, but we're mostly looking at 5 or so. Heck, right now, 3 would be nice. It will proably be closer to the first of the year before we know for sure, but it does look like we will be moving around Greenville somewheres. I'd like to be within 20 miles of Greenville. I've heard good things about cadddo mills and had thought about checking it out too when we decide to go look around there. |

Posted - Jul 07 2010 : 09:12:12 AM nieki, greenville is an east texas town with a quant downtown square. we live about 50 miles north of there. it is pretty far from denton which is really one of my favorite cities in texas. i worked in greenville as a home health occupational therapist but that was well over 10 years ago. greenville is an old town by texas standards and has alot of old houses to show for it. i think the land probably is clay soil and pretty fertile, but i dont know that for sure. it is not an arid region like west texas.
greenville is closer to betsy than it is to me. i think it is very possible to get a small acreage area in that part of texas. what are you looking for?

Posted - Jul 04 2010 : 3:23:05 PM I have realtives in Grand Prairie, Cleburn, & Ft. Worth. The land is flat and there is good hunting within decent driving distance. The reasons for hunting/fishing licenses are to control the number animals/fish taken every year, replinish decimated populations of animals/fish, and many conservations projects for wildlife and land restoration. The people who hunt/fish in my family consider the license fees money well spent.

Posted - Jul 04 2010 : 06:57:02 AM Are you looking at the Denton, TX area (which is NW of the Dallas Metroplex) or Greenville, TX (which is east of Dallas)? I live in a small town that is north of Greenville and I love it!! Once I know for sure where you'll be, I can tell you all about each area.

Posted - Jul 03 2010 : 10:45:29 PM My brother lives in Frisco and I've been through that area a number of times...the land is pretty flat and it is kind of dry but if you can get far enough from Dallas (at least a hundred miles) the towns seem really nice. Wasn't one of our presidents born in Sherman or Denton? Just a note: this past winter, Dallas had more snow than it's had in a long time. They actually had more snow than we had here (near St. Louis). Cindy

Posted - Jul 02 2010 : 5:38:50 PM My three daughters live in Denton, and my cousin in plano. It is nice and flat up there with good soil but it can be very dry. Sometimes watering is necessary. You need to be careful though when you buy because it can be so dry. Ponds dry up and stay dry for long periods of time. My friend bought 10 acres up there 18 months ago. All went very well for a while, they had three horses planted a garden etc. Then the winter came and it started to rain. Well, her back yard where the horses lives started to fill up with water. They put in french drains, brought in dirt etc. Then the county came in and said that they couldn't do anything else because the land was officially a pond. They had to let the land flood because if they changed the way the water ran it would affect the neighbors. She said how could they sell the property when it was a pond. He said it wasn't suppose to be sold and that there was nothing they could do. So be careful and check with the county before you buy.

Posted - Jul 02 2010 : 3:10:30 PM My sister lives and owns a BBQ in Aubrey, which is just north of Denton. Her area is very agricultural and...flat. Lol, but I think that the soil is very good there. Isn't that the Blacklands soil, I believe? Here it is all red mud and sand. There it is few trees, and black soil. I bet it's pretty good for farming. My sister keeps a garden there. I do not know about land price. The closer you are to Dallas, the more expensive, but the further away it is, it does get cheaper, so...
Also, yes you do need a permit to hunt certain animals. Deer, turkey, some fish, ducks, dove(???) I believe all have a season. This is to keep the population from getting completely deicmated, so you do have to get a hunting OR a fishing license. I suppose that is weird!
Amy, you need to move up here! There are SOOOO many former Houstonians here. Look @ Rusk, TX. It's a little ol' hole in the wall w/ good schools and is a neat town. :0) I live about 12 miles from there.

Posted - Jul 02 2010 : 11:52:42 AM Just moved to Texas and I notice that land is cheaper than it was in Ohio. We are looking north of Houston. We would like some acres.
I think you need a special permit to hunt. It is really strange.
