Are there any writers in the MJF community that would like to chat about our projects, offer advice or just a friendly ear, and just generally support each other to meet our writing goals? I'm hoping there are some because I'd love to chat with you all and create a virtual writers' group here. If you are interested, please let me know!

I love to write and have always wanted to write a book about Homesteading in the modern age. There is a book called, "Living on the Earth" by Alicia Bay Laurel. I want to write a book like that. I teach domestic arts classes using time tested materials and skills and am amazed how many people want to learn these things. I love to read stories about women traveling west during the 1860's era, but I think I've read them all. Anyone got any suggestions on authors that write like that?
Count me in, please!

The one that it is already written is about this nerd and prom queen type who meet so that they can pull off a school prank. Then they realize that they like each other, and they start secretly dating. Prom queen's friends are crushed that their friend lied to them, but in the end everything is good and everyone is friends again.

Very cool Megan! I'm thinking of making it into a little book. I had to write a short story for one of my writing classes and had to cut it short. What was your short story about?

All your stories sound wonderful ladies! I wrote a short story about a girl traveling with her family on the Oregon trail. I really like that era. :)

Amy, I just started something today about a city teenager who's family moves to the country. The teenager resists the change at first, but then finds that country is more than just land, that it has power to bring people together.

Kimberly, I think your story sounds very interesting! I'm excited to see how it all develops. Isn't it fun doing all the research? And writing in first person - how's it going? Is it challenging working with a new point of view? Is it working better for your story?

Megan, are you currently working on anything? I know you said you want to write in the teenage chick lit genre...are you writing anything right now?

Well, I think I have a good handle on the research. My story is about a 17 year old girl that lives with her grandma on a chicken farm in northern Washington. She accidentally gets drawn into her uncle's criminal dealings and the story is about how that impacts her and how she changes because of it. She meets a boyfriend in the course of all this and he gets involved too, which is going to impact them. The story takes place over a four month period. I haven't worked out all the details yet but the group is going to get nearly caught, the uncle is going to run off and the girl's father is going to be back in the picture again. A lot of the action will be in Seattle, so I've been studying old photos and reading up on the town to get the details right.

I'm also trying something new for me = writing in the first person, present tense, like "I put down the spade and walk over to him, offering my hand in truce." It's a style I haven't done before but I wanted the story to have a current, immediate feel. We'll see how it goes.

Karen, thanks for the recommendation. I'll check out her site. :-)

My goal is to FINISH something! I used to be able to do that, back when I was writing for $$. But in the last three years I haven't finished anything. I find that its easiest to finish something when I can kind of use the writing as working through what's going on in my mind or life at the time....which is why the above books have so much to do with homeschooling or farming or figuring out who you are. Except for that boyfriend book...then again, I *don't* need a boyfriend because I'm happily married!!

I'm actually thinking that the books #1 and #2 (So Something and Farmish) could actually be combined.

Tell me more about the book you're working on...you said it was set in 1937...how is the research going? What is the storyline? That is so great that you've set a goal for October. :) And thanks for starting this thread to get people going!

I think it sounds like you have some good momentum on Greener Grass, but it certainly matters more what you have a hankering to work on right now. What kind of a goals do you see for yourself on one of the stories?

I've got four novels started. (I'm so decisive, aren't I?) That's generally how I start out - a bunch of different ideas, and then one of them becomes obviously more important or more interesting to me to tell at some point in time, and that becomes the one I focus on. The others get shelved for awhile. (That's how it was with the first two I finished also, so I guess that's how I work!)So let me know what you think...

#1 - "So Something" - humorous novel about a homeschooling mom with two incredible insane and wacky boys (guess where the inpspiration comes from that one). The conflict is she's trying to figure out who she is and doesn't really know where she fits, which feels odd to her since she's trying to guide her kids and tell them they can be whoever they want to be, and she can't even define that for herself. It really needs a more definite moment of conflict though and until I figure out what that is, this one is kind of on hold.

#2 - "Farmish" - Humorous novel about a woman who wants to have a "real farm" but doesn't have one yet. Feels like she can't be a real farmer until she has the red barn, white house, 150 acres, etc. Tries out "farmish" things while she's at her current place 10 acres just outside the city) but feels like a total "fake". Realizes in the end that she isn't a fake (because everything she learns gets her closer to where she wants to be) and she isn't "Farmish", she's a true farmer.

#3 "Greener Grass" - Young wife/mom moves into old farmhouse, always has to do things by herself because husband works off the farm odd hours. Learning as she goes. Meets up with older single woman on farm down the road (because of something that happens, I'm not sure what yet). At first they don't get along, younger mom thinks older woman is totally unfriendly and helpful; older woman thinks younger mom is a snotty wannabe. As book goes on they learn they are totally wrong about each other and are more like each other than they originally thought.

4. " I don't need a boyfriend" - Young adult novel. Girl gets messed up with two different guys who are sooo wrong for her. People keep telling her she doesn't need a boyfriend. Lots of internal issues here, yadda yadda. She finally ends up with a nice guy who is so good for her, he's just perfect, and people are like "Yes! Finally someone decent" but in the end, either he decides he shouldn't be with her because she really needs to figure out who she is and have time by herself (heartbreaking!) or she decides she shouldn't be with him because she needs to figure out who she is and have time by herself (heartbreaking!).

Anyhow, so that's what I'm working on right now. Four different files on my computer. Anyone have any comments on which one sounds more interesting? I'd like to start setting some goals and really putting my nose to the grind stone again...

Hi writers! I'm really into reading teenage chicklit, so that's what I want to write. I want to write a story of stereotypical "Jersey Girls", set in a high school. I'm not trying to bash people Jersey, as it has come to my knowledge that North Jersey is the home of the "Jersey people" i.e. the people on Jersey Shore, Jerseylicious, etc. Shows about these people are my guilty pleasure, so I think that writing a story about them would be fun.

So, what is everyone up to? It would be great if we could say what we are planning to work on (or are currently working on) and what our goal is for the piece (for example, finish it, edit it, publish it, whatever).

I'm working on a novel, with a goal of completing the first draft by October 31. I have about 5000 words done so far. It is set in 1937 so I am doing a bit of research still on cost of living, landmarks, that kind of thing. I need to figure out the ending of the story before I get much more into it - I have a general idea, but I'd like to have it fleshed out.

What's your plan?

WAHOO!! Count me in! When the kids were really small, I did a lot of writing for magazines, even finished a couple books that were with an agent for awhile but never got published. Then we moved and life got insane and I never got back into it for $$. Still need to write constantly though...otherwise I feel like I'm going to explode. Thanks for puttin' the word out...would be happy to join you!! I have a lot of different novels started right now...I have to keep writing until I figure out which one will be the one I devote my energy to. :)

I think is going to be great! I've set a goal of 80,000 words by 10/31. If I can hold to 700 words a day, I can make it. I tend to be a bit wordy so I know my rough draft will need some editing but my goal is just to get the first draft actually completed.

What are you all working on or plan to work on?

Kimberly, I love writing! That's what I want to be when I grow up: an author or writer of some sort. Or a publisher. I also love reading. That's where most of my inspiration comes from! Can't wait to start this group.

Yes Kimberly I love to write! :)
I write because I have to.....I have the stories that just need to come out. I have been writing ever since I can remember. I would love to trade stories, and support other writers.
There is a henhouse called The Writer's Nook for writers, but it's kind of slow....would be nice if we could get all us like minded farm girls in there!

Oh, this is so perfect for me. I love to write, unfortunately I know of no one else who does. I did belong to a snail mail writing group a long time ago, but this would be so much better. If you want to get a glimpse of some of my writing, check out my blog where I posted one of my stories that I am working on. I hope there are more of us out there! This is going to be wonderful.
