Maybe it's because I'm always a little late getting around to turning my compost pile...or maybe it's because I didn't plant a large variety of fruits & veggies in my garden this year so God thought I needed more ~ whatever the reason, I ended up with some "accidental" crops!
I call them my "compost melons" and I can't wait to see how they do! I walked outside to turn my compost pile and right in the spot where I'd thrown out the "guts" of a canteloupe, stood dozens of tiny sprouts.
I transplanted about half a dozen into a large pot on my deck and VOILA! I have compost melons.
I know I'm not the only one to ever be blessed with an uplanned crop. I'd like to know what fun and exciting things you farmgirls have had as accidental garden bounties?

I have had compost pumpkins for 2 yrs now and even had some potatoes last year. Surprises are so fun. MB

This year, we saw a lot of tiny seedlings in the gravels at the bottom of our deck steps and OH MY, they look like baby hostas. We have a large one in a barrell container at the end of the house. We'll transplant them this week. Hostas do well here I like the big ones that kill weeds under them, lol.

I'm patiently waiting for my Sisterhood packet to arrive in the mail. Maybe I'll work on earning one of my badges by donating some of my "compost melons" to the local food bank. It was, after all, an unexpected addition to the garden. I might as well share the wealth! HOORAY!

This is the third year in a row we've had cucumbers growing in the front yard! Last year we had cukes and watermelon in the back! We do plant a regulation garden, but these volunteers delight me!

I have two volunteer tomato plants in my garden this year, from when I dumped tomato guts out there for my chickens last year. Last year I had melons, too. Also lettuce and dill...... :)

Most of my fruits & veggies are in pots on and around my deck. (Because I live inside a State Park and can't plant my garden in the ground) I get to look at them every time I walk out the front door. My purposely planted and my accidental crops always make me smile .
My cucumber vines are right at the bottom of my steps and they are pickling cukes so I grab one for a snack every now and then. It's wonderful.

This year it was brocolli. Even got to pick the first little flowerette off for a snack in the gardenb today! I have brocolli in every bucket, raised bed, all over the place. Oh... and a cabbage in the strawberries. Makes me giggle a bit sometimes! =)

Do what you love, love what you do.

A gourd tree...now that's unique! The most productive crops always seem to be the accidental ones.

One year, somehow, a bunch of bird house gourds started growing from the compost, and vine'd their way into a tree. I had about 10 huge gourds that year, it looked like the tree was growing them. It was so funny, and they make the best birdhoses. They don't grow that well when I try to grow them, Every year I keep hoping for a repeat but just wind up with surprise potatos!

Forget buns of steel, I'd rather have buns of cinnamon!
