I am hoping to learn and teach, or find others who want to do a class in my area of old timey (and new-timey even) homesteader crafts! I want to take the Palouse Prairie Girls in that direction at the moment.
What would youadd as "Essential" skills and crafts?
So far I've got: spinning, both hand and wheel if possible, candle making, soap making, quilting, Organic (as possible) gardening, herbalism, and small animal raising...I'd like to add bee keeping, but I'm allergic to wasps and yellow jackets, so I don't know if I'm allergic to bees

Add what ever homestead skills you can think of. I need ideas!
Thank !

I would use the entry catagories in the state fair as a guide too. although all the ideas posted are what I would think of in the topic.

It's all good!

Children's toys and dolls. Also music was very important then. Dancing also. Sounds like a great thing to do.

How about laundry soap and butter making? Quilling, tatting, knitting, crocheting, applique, silk embroidery, darning socks, and........ can't think, will add more later. Want to know alot about some of these old crafts? Look into acquiring Carla Emery's book. It is huge and full of wonderful infomation along this train of thought.

Don't forget soapmaking and darning, penmanship and home-made cleaning products. Good luck. I have done this at our historical society for many years. What fun! Go girl. Bonnie

Don't forget embroidery. And simple carpentry skills (such as how to build a chicken coop). And Dutch oven cooking.

How about basket weaving or rush chair seats? Rag rugs? Making butter? Don't forget pickles - pickling was really important to preservation (pickled beets, sauerkraut too).

My library has books about country crafts too. Maybe add knitting and tatting?

Don't forget jelly making, bread baking, canning and sewing! All things I am new to or wanting to learn. There is a couple of country skills and country crafts books at the library here, maybe your library has them.
