Posted - Apr 30 2010 : 4:52:48 PM I was just told that I need a new set of sheets for my bed and I took a little offense to this, especially since it wasn't from someone who has to sleep on them. I do kinda dislike the cigarette burn on the side, but it was from my DH leaning over to kiss me goodbye before running out to help a buddy pull his truck out of the snow one night. And I know the blue marker stain in the middle stands out some on my cream colored sheet, but it was from where my oldest had set up all night coloring a welcome home sis banner for her new baby sister who spent her first 6 weeks in the childrens hospital. And I know there are chocolate stains at the foot of it, but that is where my youngest stands and leans on the bed eating her chocolates watching tv, and she wasn't supposed to make it through the first night of her life. I love those sheets and they make me think of my family, not perfect but comfortable. I tried to explain all this to the person, but they just looked at me like I was nuts, so I gave up trying and changed the subject as I escorted them to the living room. Does anyone else have something like this in your house? Something less than perfect but priceless to you? I'd love to here stories about this from you all farmgirls.

Posted - May 01 2010 : 10:32:46 AM I would rather have old than new any day! Most everything I own has a story. My favorite chair came out of a neighbors trash. I discovered it was actually an expensive chair. It means more because of the story my children tell getting it into the truck!!!
It's all good!

I am the same way you are, if it brings me comfort in any way. . especially those wonderful memories. . it stays!! I applaud your tact in trying to educate first and then moving on when you realized they did not get it. . . You are truly a Farmgirl at Heart!! Hugs!

Posted - Apr 30 2010 : 10:15:17 PM Angela: If you ever make a quilt (even if it's for over a chair) cut out these pieces and include them into your "living history" quilt. Add pieces of fabric as you go through life. When the kids get married and move away, then make the quilt and it will be a treasure forever. Bonnie

Posted - Apr 30 2010 : 8:11:24 PM You should see my beat up old piano. My 4 youngest kids arn't easy on the old thing..but they love it and so do I. I would never re-finish it like some "helpful" people have suggested. I wouldn't get rid of those precious sheets either.

Posted - Apr 30 2010 : 8:10:32 PM i love the memories in my stuff.i have WAY too many to list. one favorite story i would like to share. when papa and i were married i was scared of men. i had been abused and used. so trust was hard.we lived in a little town in central,or.married about 2 years. i was pregnant. feeling fat unworthy you know... he was coming home late. leaving at night.. coming in late. i finally could not take anymore. i cried those pregnant tears. i said do you have a girl somewhere. oh my goodness. he was so shocked. he said i will be right back. he came home with a baby cradle he had made for our baby. oh my goodness. well needless to say...it is beat up chipped and well used. all our grandkids have slept there. its a fine thing. he has loved me faithfully and fully now thru a lot of sickness for 35 years this month. i love him more than life itself. sherrye

Posted - Apr 30 2010 : 7:21:41 PM Yeah I do have something like this only mine is a high chair which is about 110 years old and passed through every kid in our family, and a small baby bed that is about 50 years old. My MIL throw a fit when she saw my Dad bringing them into my house when I was pg with the oldest. She insisted that we needed new things for the baby that all of this "junk" was not good for her. I informed her that my "junk" had been refinished and made safe for baby's according to modern standards and that she could just leave my family traditions alone.
