Just wanted to share this with my farmgirl friends. We have been getting ALOT of rain here. So, yesterday I decided to put off going to Joanne's for fabric for a MJF project, and see if I have any stashed away. Tried sewing about 10 years ago, but kind of stopped at the "beginner/easy" stage. Have been inspired (by all of you) to start up again. Anyway, was digging around and came across a bag I forgot I had. It was sent to me from my mom after my grandmother passed. In it are patterns belonging to my grandmother from the early 60's. Some are apron patterns! One is addressed to her, mailed from "Family Circle" magazine. I thought of her and how excited she must have been to get that in the mailbox, the same way I am when I get something. Then in one of the patterns, were clippings of pictures from magazines and newspapers of hairstyles she liked, a bedspread she liked...and then I found a letter!!! A handwritten letter from July 1964 from one of her sisters. It was on lined paper, and I can imagine my grandma sitting on her porch on a hot July day, reading it. I felt I found a piece of family history. I want to try to earn the merit badge for aprons. None of these patterns were cut. Do you think I should make one of my grandma's patterns, or do you think I should leave them all intact?

Oh wow...I have goosebumps. What an exciting find. What good are patterns if we don't actually "make something?" They just dry-rot/fold-rot away....then what will you have. Oh ya....I'd make one...it can be your little, "Welcome Back" to "ye old sewing circle." lolol And think how proud and how good you'll feel in it...not to mention the story you'll be able to tell about it each time. A Great Holiday Dinner Story! What a Nice New Traditionyou can start! I'm envious!!! :-)...in a Good, Sisterly Way of course!! Enjoy your Treasure!

I would do the thing with tracing paper or you can use sew in interfacing to make the pattern out of. I think it would be wonderful to have an apron off a pattern that belonged to my Grandma. Good luck and post photo's.

Amy, thank you. That is what I'll do, I'll make the pattern but use tracing paper. I wonder if that is what my grandma did? None of them were cut, but they were all opened, and I can't imagine her 'wasting' them by never using them.

Nicole - that is the coolest thing ever!! And what a neat idea to do your apron badge from those patterns. If you want to leave the patterns uncut you can use tracing paper to make a pattern from them. I always tend to try to preserve things - I inherited my grandma's sewing/odds and ends dresser and all the stuff in it and every time I take something out I try to put it back the exact same way it was:)

What a find! As far as cutting the patterns goes, I would do whatever would be more sentimental for you. if it's having her pattern to hold, then keep it in tact. If it's making the pattern in honor of her memory and feeling she would be proud, then heck...cut into the thing! Good luck, whatever you do and way to go for takin up sewing again!

I think it was a good omen that you dug out thatbag and found all that you did. Make some aprons from your G/mas patterns, make her proud as well as yourself, and add that story to your familys history for one of your G/daughters down the line to find.

What a wonderful find! I think you grandmother would have been thrilled for you to make one of the patterns. Each time you wear that apron you will think of her and the treasure she left behind.
