Hello girlfriends... I was exploring the Body and Soul magazine website and found a link that sounds like something that I would really enjoy. I don't know if y'all can relate to my experience or not, but when I get an urge to rent a movie, and go to the video/dvd store... I may rummage around in there looking and NOTHING, especially new releases are appealing to me. Most likely they are Apalling!!! We all know the popular themes... which do not interest me in the least.
So, when I clicked on this link for the Spiritual Cinema Movie club, I was quite interested to see what it was... http://www.spiritualcinemacircle.com/ and it sounds very inviting. These are the types of movies that I want to view, and in my little town they just are not available. If you want more options, this may be a good start. These are not necessarily religious, just new, fresh themes... read the intro and you'll see.

If you feel the same way, check it out and see what you think.

Umbrellabella--Welcome! Your name and the comments above made me think of a delicious movie even my action adventure loving husband admitted he liked. Enchanted April is set in the lake region of Italy (gorgeous!!!!) and has an interesting assortment of characters on holiday. You could get lost in the scenery alone! Enjoy and keep posting!

My husband is still the car chase and war movie type, but he will watch a REAL movie sometimes too. Which is nice. Maybe as he gets older he will come around even more.
I love your name UmbrellaBella. I want to welcome you too!!

Welcome, Umbrellabella. When I read your moniker, I thought of a beautiful Italian woman sitting underneath an umbrella in the sun.

My husband has also begun to like films that have less blood and guts and more thought provoking content. It is good to have a mate that you can watch a movie and sigh with. Glad to have you here on the site! Thanks for the movie suggestions.

I would have to say a spiritual movie experience in our house is when my husband and I, both in tears, pause at the end of th emovie before either of us offers a heavy sigh or comment...recently we have had this happen a lot (or maybe we are both a nit sensitive at the time) either way, thought I'd share some titles with you, check them out if you like...Lackwanna Blues, The Princess and the Warrior (sounds hokey, but is an amazing foreign film), Run Lola Run, In America...
Happy viewing

I love our inter library loan program. We have been using it every week for about 4 years now since our system got on board! It started when we fell in love with those Terry Pratchett books and could not get them at our own library. Since then we have ordered about 2 or three books a week through this service. Our library is small and we have a bookmobile service that comes once a week. After we found out about the availability of movies and dvds this way we began to ask for them too. Today I viewed an animated film from france called the Tripletts of Bellevedere. It was very interresting and funny.
Last week it was an old film from france that had been recovered and restored titled "L'Talante" It to was very interresting . I loved seeing the special features that told of the history of this old film and how it had been banned for one "erotic" scene of a dream sequence that was simply beautiful.
So armed with Clares wonderful link I might be able to request more films formerly unknown to me. Thankyou Clare.
The sharing idea of membership in this club does sound like a smart way to go.

The library is always my first source for information but we have a very strange situation here. Most counties have local branches with interlibrary lending and tie into the larger network for the state, etc. Our municipality decidied that it did not want to pay into this system to participate and built their own library. It limits our resources and access to outside material, or slows down the process considerably. Strange decision since the county system is excellent but you can only belong with an address outside of our township.
My sister in law is a corporate librarian so she is a great resource when we are stuck but it would be nice to utilize all of these services ourselves. And we are the ones in the suburbs!

Connie-- Thank you sooo much for the information, particularly the right terms and phrases to use when I called my library. They are sending me a list of what is available through their World Cat catalog service (it's not yet online)... but it sounds like it will be DVD's of Sundance Film Festival -independent type movies. She did mention that they are out of the video rental business... So, I shall see! Cheerio

Thanks Connie for the info. I'm going to our library this am to see if they have this service yet. They are undergoing a big renovation so hopefully it will be soon! I LOVE our library. I have used all their services over the years and it is wonderful for the kids too. Their reading programs are always outstanding for the little ones! I used to volunteer reading in them 20 years ago and loved it! When I worked in a children's home I would take them to the library to hang out on hot summer afternoons instead of watching TV. They even have paintings to check out and ever since I can remember I have a theme every month and we check out some Van Goghs or Mattise and in the summer it's beach scenes and in the winter snow scenes or Religous prints. I know I am rambling off subject but libraries are sooo necessary in our society!

This is a great idea for those of us weary of the mainstream Hollywood trash...Although I must confess I took my Alex to see Polar Express and enjoyed it. It could have been less on special effects though but seems to convey the books message of belief in the things we cannot see with our eyes only our hearts. I loved Reserrection also, the one with Ellen Burstyn. I saw it when it was released in 1980 and have not seen it since anywhere. Have any of you seen the movie "Angels Amoung Us" with Vanessa Redgrave and Ray Liotta? I love Vannesa Redgrave's work and she is top form in this... PLays an eccentric woman alone in a Maine beach cottage who meets up with a 11 year old boy who lost his mother in an auto accident racked with guilt because he thinks he caused the accident that killed his mother. They become good pals and Vannesa tries to convey to the boy his mother is an angel and that he had nothing to do with her death. She lost her son during the waning days of the Vietnam War and shows him a diary of the communication she recieved from her son after he died... through Morse code on a small jetty in the harbour where she lives...It was a very moving film and spiritual without being overdone. I highly recommend it. Vanessa with her wild white flowing hair and brilliant blue eyes reminds one of what a guardian angel might look like, wearing a flannel plaid shirt and baggy old overalls and rubber boots.

Hello ladies Since I have worked in libraries since 1974, the librarian in me is insisting that I encourage everyone to use the public library to obtain your films for free. I am employed at the Fort Worth Public Library (TX) and just checked our catalog in regard to the films that are being discussed. We had Resurrection but did not have the other 2. However, I can access a catalog called World Cat and order even obscure items in about 10 seconds. This is all part of "Interlibrary Loan Services" which should be available at nearly every library in the US. Some libraries might not check out their dvd/videos, but I would think that the majority would. When you are ordering, you might be asked if you would pay a mailing fee; I would encourage you to say no since there will usually be a library that will absorb the mailing costs. If you do not have "ILL" for some reason, ask your local librarian about services available via your State Library. As I have time this week, I will experiment with the service myself since I have never personally ordered a film. Libraries are now providing huge numbers of films to their communities. I was amazed to learn recently that 50% of the materials checked out in Fort Worth are films not books!

Would love to know what your experiences are if you try out "ILL"

Hi Jeanne! If you click on the above link again, as I just did, you'll find that they've changed their home page yesterday. UPDATE:hmmm, maybe not... anyway, click on the "our movies" in the purple line at the top and it brings you to the list as described below.... It now includes a list of all of their November and December releases. They refer to these as "volumes". At the bottom of the page is the link to other volumes. I guess it's possible to order individual movies from previous volumes too, or maybe the whole volume.
What I like about it is that they feature not only spiritual themes, but art type movies, and shorts too. So while you may be getting 5 movies per month to view and share, three of them may be shorts, so it's not like being glued to the boob tube...
Bramble- great idea to split a membership with your friends. It's also nice that you never return the dvds... they are yours to circulate... which is what I think their point is... get more people open to these types of movies.
Cecelia-regarding cost. If you join "now", the promotional membership is 21 per month, plus shipping and apparently stays there permanently. I haven't committed to join yet, but I was playing around there yesterday and clicked on join... they have an option that comes up to prepay a year for 227, <gasp>, which saves a couple bucks a month average... but if you're committed to quality viewing and learning and growing, I guess it's a good value!

I do need to give my video store some credit... I did see Whalerider from there and have seen a few Hallmark movies from there too, but on average, the odds aren't in their favor. I have not checked our library as a source of this type of movie, so I'll have a look there... maybe write down some of the titles offered at the club and see if the library carries any of them.

The club is another resource, at least....

Clare once again you are a fabulous source of information! I am so tired of spending good money on movies that I wish after seeing I had never even heard of! This sounds like a great alternative with no strings attached.

Cecelia-
I think that maybe a few women I know will share the membership fee and the movies so the cost will be negligible. Just have to work out a distribution schedule that's fair, but doable. Would something like that work for you and family/friends?

Jeanne--Read the book, saw the movie and Blythe did a great job! I remember Ressurection with Ellen Burstyn and there's a newer version with Dana Delaney. It's interesting to compare the two performances and their approach to the "gift" but I prefer Ellen Burstyn's, she has less rage and more love and acceptance of what she has no control over. One of my all time favorite movie trilogies are the "Sarah Plain and Tall" movies based on the Patricia Mac Lachlan books.

Thanks, Clare for the link. I wish there was a list of some of the titles. Have you seen one? I only saw two movie names, Whalerider and another.

Very interesting. It made me think of a movie I saw long ago, titled "Resurrection". It was about a woman who could heal. Do any of you remember that one?

I also watched the Hallmark channel the other night when they had "Back When We Were Young" with Blythe Danner. I had read the book and the movie was very good. Maybe we could provide one another with good spiritual movies to see from our own past viewings!

The spiritual circle movies sound great, I've seen a few of the movies they mentioned (Whalerider, for one), but the $29 a month is more than I pay now to rent movies each month (from the video stores). I usually check something out from the library. Here we can order movies via internet from the main library in the city, and have them sent to a local branch. There's quite a good selection. I guess if you're not near a large city, the internet webs would be a good choice, despite the cost.

My son subscribes to that one. He loves it. We do not spend enough money on movies to justify the expense in our buget but think it is a good deal for those people who have time to watch that many movies.

That sounds pretty neat. Thought you guys might be interested in this one too... I have subscribed on and off to NetFlix. You pay like 20 bucks a month and you sign up for movies you would like to recieve. They mail the movie to you (up to five at a time) and when you mail them back they send you more. The DVDs fit into these little sleeves that are already postmarked so you just watch it put it back in the sleeve and stick it in your mailbox... Great for rural areas. They have everything from feature films to obscure films and you don't have to buy them. I have even accidently sent them a music CD and they sent it back in exchange for the right one.

OOOOO I am intrigued! Might sign up. We get some of these kind of movies through our local library. they do not seem to get the really popular yukky movies there but some really nice art films and things like whale rider etc. What is even better they are free for a week. And if I know of one I want to see I can ask for it and they will get it.
