Posted - Mar 26 2010 : 8:34:15 PM First name Karen - Pure one In school SO many girls were named Karen. I would walk down the hall (High School) and someone would call out "hey, Karen" and at least 6 girls would turn around. Funny, it says that it was the #3 name in 1965 - there ya go :-) I love that there are Karen peoples with Karen as their language - though they are not being treated very well. Just now I learned that in Armenia Karen is a mans name and they seem to make great chess players! My mother use to talk about naming her daughter Katherine alot and lo and behold her sister in law named her first Katherine :-) My aunt got snippy when I was named Karen...so close to Katherine. Oh my!!!!

Posted - Mar 26 2010 : 3:03:46 PM My mom and dad didn't decide our names by meaning, mostly we were named for family members. Though no one in my family has my first name. Denise means wise discerner and Helena means bright one. Never really cared for my first name though.

Posted - Mar 25 2010 : 3:17:47 PM My first name is Kristen which means "lover of Christ" or "believer in Christ." I've seen both. Another story is how I got my name. Should that be in a different post? Should I just tell it here? Ok, will. lol So my full first and middle name goes like this: Kristen Carol. And I was born in December. Should have been born quite close to Christmas, so my mom was thinking of Christmas Carol when she named me Kristen Carol.

That middle name couldn't be any more true! I've been swimming as long as I've been walking, swam in high school (still do, just not competitively), lifeguarded through college and love the playing in the water as much as playing in the dirt! Always thought of it as a very generic middle name, but it sure does fit!
Channah, what a wonderful idea!!

Posted - Mar 25 2010 : 09:11:05 AM I thought my name was pretty straightforward: Carol, meaning "song of joy and praise" (French origins) but then I thought I would Google it to see for sure. I also found that depending language origins, it can mean other things:
Carol: Manly, Strong. A Variant of Charles; from Carolus, the Latinized Form of the Name. Carol: Famous Bearer: Pope John Paul Ii's Real Name is Karol Wojtyla. Karol is a Variant Spelling of Carol. A Feminine Form of Charles Meaning Strong or Manly. Also a Diminutive of Caroline. Also, Feminine of Carl, meaning joy.
I like the song of joy and praise connotation. Even strong. Not so much "manly." But, I happen to know that my Mom & Dad never considered these meanings when my name was selected. They just liked the name.

Posted - Mar 24 2010 : 9:09:23 PM Well, like you said Channah, Jessie means "God is gracious" and my middle name, Nicole means "Victory"
I like the meaning much more than what I was named after.hehe. There was an old Carlie Simon song called Jessie that my Mom liked at the time I was born. Have you heard it? Obviously, it was a song of the times. I bought a CD of it. hmm...is all I'm gonna say..LOL ;) Great subject Channah! hugs Jessie

Posted - Mar 24 2010 : 4:25:51 PM LOL I'm in the floor rolling, Melanie! Who'd a thought in a million years that two girls- named after Melanie oooo what is her last name? Safka? is that right? would wind up on MJF? Too funny! My home ec teacher asked me once if I was named after the character Melanie in Gone With the Wind. I just looked at her like "umm what's that?" Then I told her about the other Melanie. She just "oh that's nice." You know she didn't approve. LOL But I loved Melanie's music growing up. I don't know what my mom ever did with those old records. I liked the roller skates song and Beautiful People was one of my favorites too.

Posted - Mar 24 2010 : 4:23:17 PM Julia means youthful and Kathleen means pure. I have always liked my name and even though I am 49, I don't feel like it. Sometimes I use the meaning of my name to rationalize my goofiness.
Channah, I love the meaning of your name. My three girls all have some kind of 'grace' meaning to their name, and we weren't even trying to do that. Must have been a God thing. :)
