I am looking for non-medicated chicken feed. I'm not sure where in my area I can find it. It seems everyone wants to feed the medicated stuff and I am trying to do the non-medicated,semi-free range approach. If anyone lives in colorado in the denver area and knows where I might be able to find some that would be fantastic. Also, if anyone happens to know a reputable website where I could order it from that would be helpful as well.

I work at a feed and farm supply, the tags on the medicated feed don't always say medicated where you might think they would BUT.....for example will say Chick Starter 24% amp .0175%. If you see amp. on any tag, that is medicated with Amprolium (sp??). Just an FYI.

no, it's good information to know... so go ahead and get on your soapbox! i'm the same way about food, though i'm not to the level yet where i can buy all organic and raise all my own meat. but i do raise chickens for eggs, so this was an education for me.

Poultry feed, when medicated, must say MEDICATED on the tag. Chick starters, when medicated, generally have coccidiostat in them to prevent this disease in the chicks. However, if you manage your poultry correctly it is not something that is needed. The problem with buying and feeding medicated feeds is that once you start you cannot stop. Medicated feeds for older birds generally have antibiotics in them, which is what is needed if you are running a poultry farm on the level of what supplies the big poultry processors. However, if you are going organic, you absolutely cannot feed antibiotics if you want that certification. Plus, the more food you consume that has antibiotics and such in it, the more you yourself require the same. And besides, I personally want to know whats in and on my meat :-)
Sorry, I get started on my soapbox about how meat is processed and can't seem to stop.

p.s. after posting this, I actually found someone in golden who offers organic nonmedicated feed for .35 a pound for the adult stuff and I believe .50 a pound for chick starter. whoo hoo!! :-)

i'm not sure what medicated feed consists of... makes me wonder now if my feed is medicated? what does it say on the bag to let you know if it is medicated?
i replied to you in a previous post because i wasn't sure where dacano is located... i've only bought chicken feed from a feed store in fort collins, but now i'm not sure if it was medicated or not. but i've also heard of a great co-op in fort collins that many of my friends here in cheyenne rave about... i guess they carry a variety of different type of things.
maybe if you can post a bit of information on what medicated feed is and what it consists of, i can keep an eye out for you if i'm ever down CO way? i'll be going to greeley and fort collins this weekend, in fact....

CJ&M,
Perina carries one so you could see who supplies them in your area. Sometimes you can go to your local feed store and they blend their own. That may help too.
