Hi all!
I am fairly new here and in my short time I have observed that there seem to be quite a lot of home schooling farmgirls here! We have home schooled for 10 years and love it.
How does home schooling compliment the farmgirl in you?

Homeschooling compliments the farmgirl in me because it allows us to live and learn at our own pace and be in the real world. The opportunities are endless and the whole world is out there to explore and delight in.
I feel my children can grow up, mature and live responsibly sooner (not that I am rushing them!) than others because of living without school and also because they are totally immersed in life from the beginning. They can make choices and have freedom.
My two youngest (13 1/2 and almost 12) have never been to school). My daughter has an organic egg and organic dog biscuit business and my son has a used book business. They know they can do whatever they want if there is determination and passion.
Living without school is GLORIOUS!

I have 5 children I am homeschooling, 4 of my own and my nephew. He will be going home in a cuople of weeks. My children are 14, 13, 11, and a 4 year old girl. I also have a 21 year old son who lives in Florida. Four boys, one girl. I have homeschooled before for a couple of years and we moved 4 years ago. We pulled them out a month ago and plan on homeschooling for a while unless we move back to Florida. MS is way to clanish for me, but I'm in a good homeschool group.

How long have your been home schooling your boys? I have one of each and both are so different in their approach to how they learn. From the level of motivation to the things they find interesting...
It can be a challenge to " feel" on top of our game sometimes...home schooling or not... Hang in there... you'll catch another wave... spring is almost here!

Yes! There are so many wonderful things to say about home schooling one can hardly capture it all in one or two paragraphs! It is a lifestyle after all! Having a farmgirl heart just adds to it. I think it's great your daughter is such a little farmerette.. I am encouraging our's to join the sisterhood with me too! She does so many craft things already.
I just started a new " thread" on my blog about our home schooling journey. I decided to start with the beginning, and how we chose home schooling. I have titled it Follow Your Heart,[/b] it will lead you home... I will add one or two monthy posts about our home schooling experience in hopes of eventually capturing the last 10 years in some sort of cronological order.

I am encouraged by te thread and responses. I just started homeschooling again a month aago and have been having a hard time readjusting. I was on my farmgirl game and then when the boys came home I have had a hard time doing things and getting things done. I am slacking somewhat but feel encouraged. Thank you.

Deb- I agree with the sense of "community" also. My DD is in 4-H for the 5th yr in a row and is the Vice President of the local club this year too. They do a lot of community projects as well as their own projects to take to the fair. This year my DD is doing a Market Steer, pet goat, chicken, leather crafting, gardening, trail horse, and candy making projects. She and I also go to help a local church(not the one we belong to) sort clothes each month for their free clothes give-away. My DD is definitely a "farmgirl-in-training". She will be 13 very soon. She loves what she does, she also is learning to sew and scrapbook as well as work on other crafts when we find extra time.
As her parent/school teacher/and 4-H leader of several of her projects we get to spend A LOT of quality time as well as quantity of time together. She learns our VALUES not those of the public school teacher. There are just so many GREAT BENEFITS to homeschooling I can't ever think of them all at the same time.
It sounds like you are like me in the respect that you would recommend homeschooling to everyone you could.

I love how you mention, "thinking on your feet" and how important it is to encourage this in children today. Having the life style you have is a natural " learning ground" for children too!
As for this farmgirl, home schooling has allowed us to guide our children through the seasons of their own growth at their own pace.
We have shared our love of life, nature, animals and art with them and as a result wonder is still alive in them at 12 and 14...
Children are naturally creative so the farmgirl in me is always encouraging them to try new things as a way of expressing themselves.
We also wanted them to have "community ". Our son (and his father) have been involved in Boy Scouts and our daughter is a Rainbow Girl...
At the root of it all, Farmgirls are independent and can-do sorts of gals and I wanted our children to have a life -long love of learning, know themselves, and be self reliant.
Home schooling is one way to do that and more...

Okay, I'll be the first to reply
We incorporate our ranch lifestyle with our homeschooling curriculum. Animal husbandry, quality of crops, conservation, gardening, canning, cooking, etc. We have lots of practicality of things like math for example , like when we sell steers for certain price a pound how much do we make, if tractor fuel is "this price now" and it takes x# of gallons to cut, and bale the hay and the yield is "this" then how much does it cost us to do our own hay? etc, etc, etc.
That is just one example but we do lots of that around here and like I said it's practical math, without a calculator or even pencil and paper, we teach DD to do it in her head. She of course started with pencil and paper, but we've graduated to "thinking on your feet" we just don't think enough kids can do that anymore.
I'll be interested in hearing what other say, and what about you Deb, how does it compliment the farmgirl in YOU?
