This is my first Lenten season as a Catholic, and I decided to do it right and give up something that really means a lot to me...my television! (And pop, too, but that's kind of a different story.)

Can you believe I'm actually going through withdrawls? I don't really watch anything in particular anyway, but I am a t.v.-series-on-DVD junkie, especially "Keeping Up Appearances" and "Are You Being Served?" I almost always have them on in the background as I work around the house.

For the second day, though, the house is weirdly silent. And I'm really bored! The house is clean, and I'm having trouble finding stuff to do. I need to scrape up some projects, and soon!

We got rid of tv and just have netflix, but that's mostly for my DH. I always have classical music on in here for me and my animals. Very calming for us all. At first it was weird not being able to turn TV on just to watch TWC snowstorms coming in and Food Channel shows. But after about 2 weeks I don't even miss it. And thanks to MJF I REALLY don't miss TV at all now. I love those silly British comedies too Jessie. They crack me up.I have so much reading material that I'm spending any sitting time reading now. It's actually a Blessing. I'm proving to myself that "You can teach an old dog new tricks!" lol

YOu guys are never going to believe this, but when I was single, I didn't even HAVE a TV. And I LOVED it!! My friends called my house the "Zen" place since there was no background noise on incessantly. I'd give anything to pitch the stupid thing out, and it would probably take a few days to get used to it for me, but DH would have a coronary if there was no TV. :(

Good luck to all of you who are giving it up! I think you will find that it is one of the best decisions you have ever made. After a few days you will get used to it. Remember there is always the radio and books on cd.

We shut our TV off at the beginning of the year. I found I had become addicted too! The first week was the hardest, then it got easier. Now I don't miss it much at all. I find I'm less stressed because I don't watch all the negetive stuff!

Always good to know I'm not alone...misery loves company! And I hope, in the end, I'll get used to being without the "idiot box" and be better off, anyway. I hate to think of how dependent I am on it. I found an Internet radio station that broadcasts old timey radio shows, like "The Shadow" and "Fibber McGee and Molly" and things like that. It has helped bridge the gap, so to speak.

DH and I gave up tv for lent also, but we also included no movies at the theater, no rental movies and no xbox for DH. For me I think the hardest part will be when I am doing a boring chore like ironing, that is when I would turn it on for noise. In the evening I will miss a few of my shows, but I think I will live. We also each have a personal sacrafice for lent too. At least Jessee you know you aren't alone out here.

I know what you mean about withdrawls. We have been without TV since Dec.

I find myself when the kids are not home just plopping on the couch and looking at this big black screen. I *sigh* and get up shortly there after and find something to do. There is ALWAYS something to do. Its been unusually cold here in FL and all I want to do is GET WARM again.

You can do it. Lift it up to God.

Wow Jessie that is great. Like you I also have the TV on as noise in the background. I do have certain shows on that I like but if I missed them I would live. My girlfriend raised 7 wonderful children with no TV. I wonder if after the 6 weeks you will want it on. Have you played the radio? I like to listen to CD's and recommend the Susan Boyal CD

Good luck, You can do it because you are doing it for God. I actually gave up Choclate for life because in a prayer I said I will give up all choclate if you will make it easier on my son to quit drinking. Even if my son has bad days I know I can never have choclate again because I belive he will answer my prayer.

For lent I said I would walk more and take stairs. It has been cold so I've just so far walked up & down my stairs until I get tired and I get tired after 3 or 4 X's but I hope to increase it with in the 6 weeks.

God is good and has a wonderful sense of humor I believe.

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.
