Posted - Feb 18 2010 : 04:52:07 AM The last few days I have a bumpy rash, wonder if it could be from my Valentine candy? Can't think of anything else that is different that I could have been into. Anybody out there have an allergy to chocolate?

Posted - Mar 04 2010 : 08:00:27 AM I don't have a "known" allergy, but I do not like the taste of chocolate - any chocolate. Just smelling chocolate cooking will make me start heaving and if my husband and daughter eat it and then kiss me or get close to my face, I'll start to heave. I figure it's my body telling me that that item is not good for me. I'd hate to see what would happen to me if I actually ate some. |

Posted - Feb 19 2010 : 07:37:53 AM This time of year, if I get a rash I'm more inclined to believe it is from the dry, heated indoor air rather than than an actual allergy. Especially if you tend to take hot showers or baths. Out here in the west it's double trouble since we have such low humidity. I'd try taking cooler showers/baths and slathering on a creamier moisturizer before I'd give up chocolate! I'm such a choco-holic that if I were truly allergic they'd probably find me dead with a half eaten Milky Way in my mouth!

Posted - Feb 18 2010 : 3:31:46 PM If you see an allergist, there are ways to pinpoint what type of things you could be allergic to. I have a friend who DOES break out into little hives when eating chocolate, so it's not unheard of.

Posted - Feb 18 2010 : 12:49:23 PM Hahaha Marybeth!! I have that same problem.
But there is an allergy to chocolate, Nancy Jo. My dd's teacher is allergic to it. But now I can't remember how it affects her. I'm thinking she said something about a rash and swelling.

Posted - Feb 18 2010 : 07:34:03 AM Unfortunately it could be an allergy to chocolate- or the filling- or both- or the dyes used! If you suspect an allergy and it's not life threatening you could try a different type of chocolate - especially a more pure version than most valentine chocolates are and see if that still gives you the same reaction.

Posted - Feb 18 2010 : 06:40:13 AM I did as a little girl, Nancy. I never got a rash, though, just vomited...and got a migraine. I don't tempt fate too often, and really have never acquired a taste for chocolate, so I can't say I eat enough to see if I'm really allergic!!!!

Posted - Feb 18 2010 : 05:43:00 AM I bet it is a reaction to a filling in the chocolate, not the chocolate it's self. Are you allergic to nuts? That is the most common cause.
