I have decided to give up grocery shopping for Lent. I love grocery shopping and could go everyday, and sometimes do. this causes me to overspend BIG TIME!! so I have decided that for Lent, I will "shop" from home only.
The only thing I will buy is milk for my baby (I haven't given him Whole milk from our cows yet) and some fresh fruit and salad stuff.

Jeannie, I am not really stocked up, I know I have a lot of food in my house. I might not be eating exactly what I want to eat, but that , for me , is the point. So, not only am I giving up spending $$$ un-wisely in the grocery store, I am using up things in my house. I have a freezer full of beef, pork, chicken...plus prepared foods. Also lots of dry goods, peas, beans, lentils...it will be kind of fun to be extra creative in the kitchen!

Melanie,
I am only allowed to grocery shop with supervision LOL. I get in there and just can't stop. What is that all about?

Robin - you are right. It is very appropriate to give during Lent (or anytime!)and not give up something. I go back and forth each year. One year I chose to listen to only Christian music throughout the six weeks of Lent. One year I donated lots more to the food closet at church. This year I feel compelled to give something up. I need to challenge that part of me for discipline and re-focus on my walk with the Lord. I guess the important thing for me is to do something that exercises my faith in a tangible way, and each year I choose something different.

I am Episcopalian.

Are you all Catholic? I am. I used to give up things for Lent...until a really good friend who is like a brother to me got me started on a different path. He is also Catholic, but he is also the most Christian person I have ever met. I have known him for over 15 years and I have never once heard him say a bad things about anyone. He really walks his talk....anyways for Lent he got me to not give up something but to give something. It may be small things like helping a neighbor or volunteering. Just anything that can help out another person.

I have found this to be very rewarding. Spiritually its very lifting for me. Instead of giving things up, I use this time to just give things, whether its my time or donations.

Does anyone else attend Mass on Ash wednesday?

I was thinking dessert, or maybe Mochas, hmmm - you realize that Sundays don't count right?

I am going to give up the sweets. Also I have been thinking anything that is not homemade.

I am giving up shopping in general for lent except grocery shopping, which I really don't like to do because I have a hard time planning meals for my family because they are very picky! But I love to shop it is my way to get away, but I just think of the money I will save and then I can spend it on my garden this spring, I want to add some raised beds and another rain barrel or two, last year I did all my watering from the barrel or mother nature (granted it was a wet summer)

This is the first time I have heard anyone give up buying food for Lent. Pretty amazing. Six weeks - you must be stocked up! I love to go to the grocery store too, and go almost every day. I know all the employees there! It is a joy to walk the aisles and I always go early in the day when it is not crowded. Absolutely love it. ACtually giving that up for Lent is a valid goal.

I am thinking I am going to try to give up my evening Chardonnay wine. I will miss it. That is bad, huh?
