In Virgil, IL. It's about an hour west of Chicago. 4.3 in magnitude. Pretty big for us here in the midwest!

We didn't feel it here. (Especially in my house - we live near a quarry so we're used to feeling the house shake once in awhile. )

People are reporting things falling off shelves - snow knocked off all the trees and dogs going nuts right before!

The last one we had was 4.something out in Jones, but we were able to feel some of it 30 miles away.

The news people said it wasn't anywhere near the New Madrid. Which I've heard we could be in store for a big one when that one decides to go.

Apparently there are 2 other fault lines up further in our state one runs out towards Iowa and the other vertically down the state. I forget the names.

They've downgraded it now to a 3.8

I remember being at my Grams in the high desert in California and almost being knocked off the barstool I was sitting on. It was an aftershock we had felt. It was terrifying to me! I wanted to bolt out of the house. Everyone else just sat and kept doing what they were doing. My aunt kept reading, looked up for a second at the ceiling fan and said "earthquake". LIke it was nothing! I would have been out in the desert running in circles if they'd let me.

We live right on the new Madrid fault line and get little ones here all the time. They expect a big one to hit here sometime in the next 10-20 years. We have eathquake insurance and we live in arkansas!

KayB....Me too! I grew up in the Air Force and I remember so well the sound of sonic booms....so it sounds like that? I remember the windows rattling and pictures on the wall bouncing---I don't miss that at all!

Are there always after shocks from an earthquake?

I don't know girls...living anywhere near a fault line would make me a nervous wreck.

My aunt, who lives in Rockford said she felt it. She actually thought it was a snowplow (apparently, so did a lot of people) but her dog, Scootie, acted especially strange and ran into the bathroom and hopped into the bathtub.

We've had a few here. I thought the first few were sonic booms. One Sunday morning DH and I were sitting in bed when one hit and within 5 minutes it was one the news. I told him it was either a sonic boom or another quake. They've outlawed the sonic booms but I grew up in the flight pattern of the air force base here and that's exactly what it sounded like. The first time one happened a couple of years ago, we thought some blew up on the base.

My Grandparents lived in Missouri so I was familiar to the New Madrid fault that Teresa mentioned and was wondering if it was this fault that the earthquake happened today. Or does Illinois have their own faultline? Glad no body was hurt.

I'll bet alot of you did'nt know that the biggest recorded earthquake in the USA was in Missouri, on what is called the "New Madrid" fault. I believe it was in 1892, and it was an 8.2, it caused the Mississippi river to run backwards for a day or so. Your eathquake was small by California standards, but if you haven't ever felt one before, they can be scary as hell.

Oh my goodness....Chicago? My uncle and aunt live in a suburb just outside of Chicago.

I had heard there was a fault line running through Illinois.

Scary huh?

What exactly does one do when an earthquake occurs?

We felt it at my house. At first we thought it was a snow plow going by. Then after a few seconds of my candle vibrating on the nightstand we realized what it really was. According to the news there was not damage anywhere.

I haven't seen it reported online! But they have something stupid about a billboard mystery regarding GW Bush! I hate the media sometimes. the stuff they should report goes unnoticed!

It's all good!

Wow! I second what Julie said! I hope no one was hurt! I have only felt one earthquake before and that was so minor I wasn't sure what it was until I found out that we had been on the very edge of the affected area- The ground trembled for about a second and at first I thought I was imagining it or that I was have a vertigo fit.

Wow! You've got to be kidding! I would never have guessed. I hope nobody got hurt. I don't own a T.V. so I will have to read about it on the internet. Take care and God Bless!
