Posted - Apr 18 2010 : 03:26:56 AM I am learning Spanish so I can better converse with the growing Hispanic population in my small town. I work at the local hospital as a CNA (certified nursing assistant)so Spanish would really help me on the job.

Posted - Feb 08 2010 : 3:49:26 PM Fun post. I speak English and Spanish. I don't know what language my DH speaks, but I'm not very fluent sometimes. :) Funny story about building a raised bed for the strawberries this weekend...(deep breath after 3 minutes of talking circles around each other trying to understand) ...I ended up drawing a diagram with measurements and telling him if he came close I would be happy with it.

Posted - Feb 08 2010 : 08:33:27 AM Oh, I can also do sign language. My best friend and I taught ourselves the basics in high school. Then we lived near the OK School for the Deaf and the kids there taught me all the dirty words.
My kids can speak Hawaiian. It's a beautiful language and come to find out they were cussing me and calling me names and I never even knew it.

Posted - Feb 08 2010 : 08:31:23 AM I speak English, Army, and some Spanish. I took 8 years of Spanish and can barely get by. Luckily, we had a great teacher who taught us what is spoken in Mexico.

Posted - Feb 08 2010 : 07:50:20 AM I can read better in Spanish than I speak it. I can sing one little song in Finnish. I had 4 years of Latin in HS but that is long gone as far as speaking is concerned. And I sign in American Sign Language. I haven't used that in a very long time either but I used to be an interpreter for about a year for a student who was profoundly hearing impaired. As with the Spanish/Latin....the less you use it the harder it is to remember. |

Posted - Feb 07 2010 : 7:21:52 PM I have to admit that I speak Southern. And I'm doing good to do that. LOL!

Posted - Feb 07 2010 : 7:12:19 PM I found out when we moved to Scotland that English is not necessarily English. LOL. We sat down with some Scottish friends one night and came up with over 300 words that meant something different in American English than in Scottish English. Then we called over some Welsh friends and discovered even more. It was really fun working on the list.

Posted - Feb 07 2010 : 3:20:01 PM I caught the Canadian EH...lol! Australian is English, yes, but not like our American English. I, too, enjoy all of the different accents and variations in the "English" language! I enjoyed your story, Marian...reminds me of myself, always tuning in when I hear other languages and accents! :-)
