Does anyone collect antique and vintage feed sacks? I think they are just darling! I was able to find a few for $3-5 each at a local antique shop! I am so thrilled. They seem to go for alot more on ebay and etsy these days! I am wanting to make a quilt with them. I also found some lovely reproduction feed sack material to supplement the rest.
What are your favorite patterns and colorways? What do you like to use them for? |

haha! I have one...found it at "Spencer's" antiques over in the Hillyard area....The lady was closing down her booth (to re-locate to 'Wiggits' in CDA)and so she sold me 3 aprons & the feed(mash) sac for $10...I am happy...& the really cool part...the sack, tho' faded, has "Washington" on the front label along w/the composition of the Mash that was in the bag at one time! Score! So ya see, there was 1..& I got it! giggle giggle!

WOW! There's a memory I need to dust off and cherish awhile. My G-Grandma made quilts out of them. I still have the one she gave me. Lots of tiny flowered blocks, all colors. Mom said when she was little she had dresses made from them...and why not? They were beautiful. Thanks for the Memory gals!

I haven't seen any feed sacks in years. I remember my mom using them to make kitchen towels and pillow cases. she always made sure to get some pretty ones. |

I love the idea of feed sacks but just haven't seen them here. I agree with you Rene' I guess we don't have them here. I would like one to hang in my kitchen, if I could find the room! lol

I have quite a few but havent done much with them. Still waiting on some ideas I guess. I've never heard of half.com either. Is it just books?

I hit a bonanza a while back and bought about 40 pieces for $5 each. I was thrilled! The goal is to turn them into shopping totes to sell in my etsy shop and at a local shop that caters to local artists. Quite a variety of patterns and colors.
I have in my collection of aprons 2 that were given to me by an 87 year old lady at church. They are so unique in style as she used every scrap to make the aprons, (she had about 14 in all). She made them during WWII out of feed sacks. She told me, ' My mother in law and I made them during the war while we waited for our men'. I can almost envision her on the Kansas plains as a young wife, donned with a feed sack apron, full of eggs or garden produce, pausing and looking at the eastern horizon, wondering how and where her husband was, so many miles away. I will treasure those aprons and their history for a long time.
For tomorrow and its needs I do not pray, but keep me, guide me, love me, Lord just for today.

I was given some feed sacks. I just have not found the right pattern. I am currently using up my 30's repro. I think that I would like to make a doll/baby size quilt more for decor than for using. I must confess sometimes I just like to look and touch them. When the right pattern comes along I will know. Happy hunting!!

That seed sack sounds wonderful! I don't think I have ever seen seed sacks before. I get on ebay way too much. Also Amazon. I am constantly on Amazon and Half.com to find interesting farming, gardening, and crafting books!

I have a few, but honestly, more than display, I haven't done much with them. My most recent purchase was a seed sack that read the name of the company, but alleged their seeds were "More Trustworthy Than Sir Galahad" with a lovely image of a night on a horse.
I like the hunt of finding them here and there, and don't use Ebay for much anymore (I know, I know, I'm probably missing out).
