when I was a kid my parents had this antique pot next to the fire place filled to the brim with matchbooks. There were from all over, bars, restraunts, hotels and that's what we used to light everything. candles, the fire place, the stove, everything. and no one does that anymore and I find myself using a cheesy plastic lighter I stole from my dad's hoard of lighters. I know you can buy boxes of matches, but it isn't the same, not at all.
although, now that I'm thinking about it, I have seen really cute little match box holders for the wall, of the antique/vintage variety and since my birthday is coming up, I'm might just see about getting one... hmmm :)

 Don't mail matches of any kind..... against the post office rules....very dangerous! 
I liked match books too...and I loved the hanging kitchen match holders....I've seen a pattern for one with the vintage look done in plastic canvas...sure wish I could find that pattern again. It was adorable.

Ha! Back in the day, as a waitress, we were required to carry matchbooks and handwipes with the restaurants logo on it. At the end of the night, I just took them home. As many matches I have collected over the years, I could probably light New York City on fire, LOL!

the strike anywhere matches are always available (when I look) around here, but I'm assuming it's because the only time we run out of wood in the stores is the major summer holidays for beach bonfires and camp outs :)
and maybe I just need to get out more and look out for match books when I am out! I'm glad they are still around!

I know what you mean Heather. When DH and I started dating years ago, we always picked up a matchbook wherever we were. Such memories. I have a large glass bowl with a lid I keep them in. I love those as much as buttons. Oh, and I bought myself an antique match holder so that I could put my wooden "Strike Anywhere" matches in them. Do you know that those type matches are hard to find around here? Weird I know. Being ex-Boyscout/ex-Army my DH called my attention to that little detail.

What an appropriate post. Our lighter ran out of fuel last night and I couldn't find a single lighter in the house this am when I went to light the woodstove. I couldn't find any matches either because my grocery has been out of them and I haven't bought any in awhile. I tried to light a piece of paper on the stove, but it just smoldered.
Finally DH dug an old match book out of his jewelry box. I have been guarding that with my life today LOL! At least until I can get to the store and get a new lighter.
I had to explain to my kids what it was and how to light a match LOL!

Heather, I travel all quite a bit and pick up match books at restaurants and hotels. I'd be happy to send you some if you like. And you can buy books of matches just like the boxed matches. They come in box like stick matches and have uniform covers. :)
