Posted - Jan 07 2010 : 10:07:17 AM I don't know why, but when the weatherman says the *S* word around here, people panic. I mean they run to the grocery stores and empty the shelves of bread, milk and eggs. Why?? They think we are going to get the blzzard of whatever again. We had no power for weeks here. So people panic.
I make bread, so I can check that off the list. I have chickens. Check that off. I am now getting milk from my friend from her 2 Jersey's. But I do have goats. Theyre just dried up. So I am set right now. Just got 2 gallons. My freezers are full of meat and veggies. I have toilet paper. I'm set. We just had the propane tank filled, too.
So what do ya'll stock up on when you hear the *S* word? Are you already stocked?
It started snowing a few hours ago. Not much here yet but could get a few inches by Friday. And VERY cold. 15 at night.
Stay warm (and full), ya'll.

Posted - Jan 09 2010 : 12:44:26 PM Although I don't live in the Mid-West any longer we live in Florida...Any time I hear the S---word, I freak out. So Now I hear the H---word and freak out again. Anyone that comes to my House knows if we have some kind of devastational event...we're the "It House." Pantry stocked and ready... I think it was growing up with parents from the depression & knowing sometimes you need to depend on that stocked pantry. I go to the Farmers Market regularly and what they have an abundance of I buy and put in my 15 tray dehydrator. All of our friends & family under the Umbrella.

Posted - Jan 09 2010 : 05:28:21 AM I forgot to mention that here in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin the stores that carry shovels and ice melter are the only ones with empty shelves. We just got through a couple of really big storms, but I just go to my pantry and look at all the beautiful rows of jars full of my summer bounty and then have a sigh of relief. Oh wait, how much toilet paper have I got? LOL

Posted - Jan 09 2010 : 03:32:37 AM Here in NC they do the same thing CRAZY! I'm an Ohio gal and don't tend tp "panic" unless it's over 2 or 3 FEET! (rare in these parts)

Posted - Jan 08 2010 : 4:57:31 PM I have 7 rolls of toilet paper right now. I usually have several packs of the jumbo rolls. I feel like panicking. I don't know how that happened. But I'll go to town Monday. And the chocolate. What a great idea. I always have to have something sweet every day. I would probably go crazy if I were snowed in without that.

Posted - Jan 08 2010 : 4:37:00 PM That toilet paper is a biggy!!! I always stock pile on that cause when we were poorer than now I could barely scrape together enough money for it so now never get below a full 12 roll pack, at the least Rae

Posted - Jan 08 2010 : 4:12:04 PM When I was younger I was asked to babysit for friends for a weekend while they went to a wedding in another state. The husband asked what I wanted to have in the house as it was in the country and a storm was coming. I said "milk, bread, eggs, peanut butter and toilet paper". Later I remember wishing I'd said chocolate too;D. But the kids were all fed and warm and we made it through the weekend just fine.

Posted - Jan 08 2010 : 11:37:38 AM In MN we don't panic a whole lot as it is a way of life for us during the winter. You always make sure your gas tank in vehicle never goes below 1/2, and have stock piled a little during the summer so you are prepared. Our shelves don't get empty in the stores for storms here as everyone is pretty prepared starting in October Rae

Posted - Jan 08 2010 : 10:17:36 AM I never heard of returning milk. I would just make bread pudding or something. My DH thinks I crazy because I always have at least 1 & 1/2 gallons in the house and it's just the 2 of us but I love milk. I used to think my 2 sons always drank the milk but now that they are on their own I realize it was me. We could be stranded in the house for a few months and we would still be OK Thank God!

Posted - Jan 08 2010 : 08:12:24 AM Usually when I hear snow is on the way I don't worry too much. Even if it snows a lot I can always walk to the grocery store, but I usually think if I have enough ingredients at home for soups and stews and maybe a roast or two since those are nice hot meals to have during cold weather and the residual heat from cooking warms up the house a bit more than we allow our selves to turn the heat up to. :D

Posted - Jan 08 2010 : 07:51:07 AM Seems to me around here, the rush is usually in the bigger towns. I live in a small rural town (around 3000 folks) and most of them don't really panic about anything. Lol. The usual talk is "We'll make do."

Posted - Jan 08 2010 : 06:31:24 AM People around here do not know how to drive when it gets this way because we don't see it much. I remember the most fun I ever had in a car was in that big blizzard about 12 years ago. Me and my friend were going to town in my VW bug. We made it fine to town and most of the way back home. But that last big hill got us going down. Thank goodness there were no cars on that road because we just started doing donuts on the way down. It was so funny. It was like slow motion. We were screaming and laughing all the way down. There's a traffic light at the bottom of that hill and we slid right to it and stopped. I still remember that. It was so fun. When we got to the bottom there were cars all over then. It really was like a slow motion film. Ever since I have been very careful or don't go at all.
I cannot imagine returning milk! That is too crazy. I can't even imagine shoveling driveways, either. That's alotta snow!
And again they missed the mark. These weather guys, good grief! First it wasn't supposed to get to 20 today and tommorrow. Now they say it's going to be in the high 20's-30's. But low teens at night. I am living for Monday and Tuesday. 45 if they're right.
Anyone else have scary driving in the snow stories?

Posted - Jan 08 2010 : 05:29:16 AM Two years ago we had 130" of snow, last year 120". We have quite a bit on the ground right now and I have been shoveling for two days. I would love to be "snowed" in! In Wisconsin, we pretty much take the snow in stride. Last year I drove down to Columbia, SC to see my daughter and apparently brought the snow with me. There was just a dusting, but they practically shut down the state. Even the gas stations and grocery stores, so maybe this is why people stock up!

Posted - Jan 07 2010 : 7:49:37 PM Here in Michigan we're pretty used to the snow so we don't panic at the first flakes, but my experience when we lived in Pennsylvania it was very similar to Judy's, Kristen's, and Rosemary's experiences.
Before the first snowfall we experienced in Pennsylvania, we happened to be at the grocery store and were shocked at the empty dairy cases. I mentioned it to the checkout girl, and she rolled her eyes and told me, "Tomorrow, if there's not a ton of snow, we'll have 200 people try to return their gallons of milk and dozens of loaves of bread." I don't know what was worse: the panic, or returning a gallon of milk to the store!
Of course, the people in this same PA town didn't have snow shovels when it did snow. The first big snow we had, I went outside to run the snowblower and was SHOCKED at the people up and down the street trying to shovel their driveways with GARDEN SPADES!

Posted - Jan 07 2010 : 7:39:45 PM I think being a farmgirl means you are prepared for just about anything. I have enough on hand to seriously be fine for a while if we got snowed in. It is all good stuff, but not necessarily what the kids like.
I think today's media loves to make mountains out of molehills.
We are going to be -5 degrees tonight, with a possible -40 degree windchills. I am all set up with my wool socks, down blankies, and portable heating unit. (doggie)

Posted - Jan 07 2010 : 5:11:40 PM Hi Kris: It is expected to get to 28 degrees in the morning, and the next two days, 19 and 17. Hey, we are not used to this cold weather. I went today and got toilet paper, milk, bread, dog food, cat food, cat treats, dog treats, and kisses! I'm set. Stay warm friend. Marly

Posted - Jan 07 2010 : 4:30:21 PM We have Lookout Mt. and Signal Mt. here, so I know how people are that live up there. They can't get down when the roads are icy. Schools are closed in the valley because mountain people can't get there. So I understand their concern. I just think the weather people make it look worse than it actually is and that makes people everywhere panic thinking they'll get snowed in.
Where I am we didn't get the 2 inches they predicted but tonight what we did get will be frozen and quite dangerous in the morning. Plus Friday night will be about 15 and just 20 Sat. And Sunday. The ground in white, though.
On the news just awhile ago they had a little segment on what to do with all the bread, milk and eggs everyone has an abundance of now. I thought that was cute. They have recipes on their web site. Of course one was french toast.

Posted - Jan 07 2010 : 3:28:52 PM I understand where you are coming from, but I also have to tell you that when you live down by the river and the only way out is up the side of a cliff.... welllll, it's usually a good idea to go to town and stock up. Although I live in town, alot of folks around here have very good reasons for panicky behavior. They ain't gonna see people for a couple of days after they get home.
I'm not exactly stocked up...but I am trying to eat out the pantry this month.
