I am an adjunct faculty member at the local university and teach 1 or 2 night classes each Fall. I read in the newspaper today that one of my students from last semester was arrested on a child-molestation charge yesterday. It was a sting operation where he had been talking via the internet with an undercover cop who he thought was a 14 or 15 year old girl. They agreed to meet for intimacy and "she" said he must bring condoms. He drove about 45 miles to the address "she" gave as her home, and he entered the house to find the police there. He had condoms & the receipt for their purchase in his possession.

This young man is 25, served in the military (served in the Middle East), has been married 3 years, and has a baby. He seemed like a very mature young man with a bright future ahead of him, and this is really disheartening, to say the least. He's one of the 4 or 5 students who I could count on to participate in class, who would stick around after class to talk, and who even had his wife bring their son up one evening to pick him up after class so we could meet.

This is so sad. Of course, I know he's innocent until proven guilty, but from the news account it loks very damning.

I got this kind of news about a childhood friend a few years ago, who was also a promising young man in his early twenties. He was found guilty and served some time in prison. He's out now, and some of my family have stayed in touch with him. I honestly don't know how to relate to the guy now, so I just haven't done anything, but I think about him all the time. Like your student, this guy is going to have to live a long life dealing with the consequences of what he did, and the rest of us are going to have to find a way to accept them back into society to some degree. It's a really hard situation. I guess we're used to thinking of child molestors as dirty old men who we can just stay away from until they die, but it's different when the molestor is young and someone you know. I wish I had answers.

That is indeed a tragedy. Part of what is heartbreaking is he had to learn it somewhere. Most of the time, these sorts of predators were molested themselves.

His poor family.

Wow, how tragic! Such a waste of a life if he's proven guilty, and his poor wife!

The end will justify the pain it took to get us here.
