My dryer's element went out a few weeks ago just when I was only 2 loads away from having all the laundry clean too! I made do by hanging clothes in the house but I simply didn't have enough places to dry clothes so the process was slow and couldn't keep up. First thing in the spring- I am installing a clothes line so that NEVER happens again.

Anyway my dad who has electrician training came up and helped me test to see if the element was bad. I had done some reading and was pretty sure it was the element. And sure enough I was right. So I called around and found out I could either spend $100 for a new element unit or buy just the wire coil for $40. The element coil looks kindof like a long silver spring. So yesterday I forked over some money and got my coil and spent the next hour unthreading the old burnt out coil through 17 insulating conectors and re-threading the new one back through.

Then I re-installed everything and VIOLA! It works! I am so proud of myself for not being willing to just let someone else do it for me. I could have paid a repair man to come out, bought a new dryer, bought the unit or even paid them to re-string it for me. But doing it myself and saving the extra money was so worth the extra time and effort!

Note to self- next time element coil goes out make sure you have wire clippers handy- it would make it some much easier!

Alee, you're an inspiration to us all! When I grew up, my father fixed everything himself. It was a rare day when he had to call a professional. My husband is also very gifted mechanically as his father took the time to show him how. I don't think today very many men, let alone women know how to do these things and don't even try. It's nice that Nora is seeing her mommy be self reliant. She'll remember these things when she's your age. Keep up the good work both on your home and in the training of your daughter!

Alee, when I read your subject, the first thing I thought of was, "Of course you did". I am so impressed with anyone that can fix anything, let alone your dryer. Way to go, Girl!

Alee, I am very proud of you. My hubby always said if you want something fixed right, ask my wife to do it. I have always prided myself in learning how to fix everything and anything that I could, cause there might come aday that that would be all I could afford was "me", lol. I can wire and plumb, change a well pump, roof and frame, put up siding, chop & split wood, sharpen a chain saw, put a new cord on a skill saw. I can't see paying someone if I can do it myself, my Mama still changes the oil and lubes her small garden tractor and she's 85, lol.

MaryJane Lee- It actually wasn't hard at all! Just a little time consuming. It was kindof like lacing shoes with a spring. The hardest part was getting the old burnt up spring to come out of all the little insulator circles.

Thanks for all the congrats and pats on the back! It is really empowering to just do it for myself- ya know?
