I live in an urban area. Big name stores are everywhere. Yes, I do shop at those big name stores. I have to at times to save my family money. But I do make a point to visit the family owned businesses. Especially when we go out to eat. We do not like to eat at chain restaurants - home cooking, that's the place for us! Plus it gives our family a feeling that we've spent our money well. It's going to help another family or another business in our area in this economy. Especially the farmers markets!
Anyway - I happened upon the 3/50 project! It asks "what 3 independently owned businesses would you miss if they disappeared?" Well, 1 came to mind immediately - there's a new to me wildbird feed store in town that I haven't visited yet. They've moved there from another town. I think I will start supporting them, if even in some small way. They suggest spending $50.00 a month - but I'm not sure I can do that - but anything will help.

i agree! When i can buy something from a family owned business i almost always do. We recently have gotten a new walmart in the area and it has put so many family owned businesses out of business that it just hurts to see. We have this one place that is called "Vintage Art Glass" This wonderful lady named Leah owns the shop. She and her friends makes everything in the store by hand. The store itself is not very big, but it is MAGNIFICENT!!! I feel like a child in a candy store! That is one of the very few businesses that still have their store fronts filled. If your EVER in PA, you have to come see it!

There is a place on the site where you can register your business. I wonder if you can register a small craft or online business?

Great idea! I wish more people understood how important local small businesses are to the character of their community. They are the things that make your area distinctive, they give the place soul and atmosphere. In other words, they make your town unique!

ABSOLUTELY!!! Since I have a little side craft business (I sew a lot, make cards, etc.) I always appreciate people buying their cards from me, etc.
So, I make an effort to support other local businesses!!!

I too support the local shops and if they do close there will be nothing to replace big box or no.

Great idea. I like to support the local businesses as well. I live in a very small town and supporting the hometown businesses helps the town keep going---or the big box stores will move in. It hurts to see empty storefronts. MB
