My SIL cut down about 20 old cedar trees along our driveway last winter for the trunks. He piled up all the brush in the pasture close to the road and it's been there all these months. He kept saying he was going to burn it. But in Ga. you have to wait til Oct. then have a burn permit. So it's been dry all week and I decided I'd go burn this huge brush pile. I am so sick of it being there. It looks so trashy. It's probably 30x30 and about 15' high. Much smaller than the 6x6 they said I could burn when I called. But the fire dept. guy said to go ahead. The winds are blowing west away from the road so that's a good thing. And only less than 10 mph. Hah! Until a fire is lit. Then the winds pick up and blow all over in every direction imaginable. And HOT!! I started on the little pile closer this way away from the road. And was hoping it wouldn't go to the big huge pile. And it didn't, thank the Lord. I just burned the small pile and the big one is still there. I think I will need to get someone with a bull dozer to move it out into the garden area away from the wooden fence and power lines. That was too scary. And I will wait til hubby and SIL are here. I'll let them do it. I am done playing with fire! Now I am hoping when I go back out there that the big pile didn't get started.

Yep. Finally after all these months it's gone. I can raise my head up now and not be ashamed and embarrased. So nice.

Yep, the big ole brush mountain is now a pile of ash! It's still smoking but almost down to nothing. I am so glad. Hubby was here and there was no wind at all. We got the chain saw and got all we could away from the fence. We lit it in a few places by the fence and it went up in no time. The fence did catch fire in one spot but I had buckets of water and got it out. I did not feel like putting up new fence today.
So that project is done. We just need something to smooth it all out. I want to plant crepe myrtle and redbud and dogwood and azaleas along the driveway now. That will look nicer than all those big old cedar trees. I can plant more apple trees now, too.
I had to take a shower and wash my hair. I smelled like a fire pit. I am so glad that's done. What a day!

Teresa, ya don't have to say another thing! I have learned my lesson. No more brush fires for me. I think I just got sick and tired of seeing that darn pile there for so long and no one doing anything about it. So I decided to do it myself. Fire is too scary.
Hey Diana. Where have you been? I have missed you. That is so sad about the neighbor's house and a darn shame. To me that just sounds so inexcusable, especially for firemen to just watch a house burn to the ground and do nothing.

Where I live, not only do we have to have a permit, we have to notify the fire department the day before we burn. The piles can be no more than 8x8x8 un-compressed, piles must be 20 feet apart with no combustable anything close by. Then you must have a fire with a fire nozzle that has an on and off there, and the hose must be charged. On top of all of that you can only burn from 7am to 10am, on non-windy days (fire creates its own wind), and there can be no cloud cover to hold the smaoke down. Starting a fire with-out water there is foolish at best and on top of being alone, I am sure glad you were able to contain it. My middle son is a federal wildlands firefighter and after arson, burning brush is the #2 cause of wildland fires.Please be carful, I don't mean to lecture, but I have seen the after math of fires more times than I want to remember, and my son and his crew have seen unbelievable tragedy.

Wow, Kris, I am so glad it did not get too out of control! Our next door neighbor's house burnt to the ground a few years back. As it turns out, they were one house away from being in the fire district, and not one of us knew it. So the fire district came and sat at the neighbor property and watched the house burn down, and the Department of Forestry came but they could only protect the trees, not the house. What a terrible disaster! Another neighbor finally came with a fire hose and saved the garage. Since then we have accessed ourselves into the fire district. A hard lesson learned!

Karen, that's the way it was here today. Not a bit of wind til I lit the fire. Then it starts blowing like crazy every which way. I will not do that again, for sure. Fire is nothing to play with. I don't have a hose that would reach way down there, either. I guess it was kind of stupid to have done that without anyone here with me.

I too have watched the neighbor built up these piles all year long and sure enough I nearly paniced(this sp does not look right ) last spring when it got away from him in one split second (sudden wind gust, like where did that come from?) and off it went. We both went running for the hose but the one near by was not long enough. I ran for hoses and connections as it was moving so fast. It was panic city but we got it out. It had spread so far so fast I could not believe it! I even had to run and move his truck. It took hours to completely go out. So be real careful there. Glad you didn't start the big one. Same reason I never burn. Too scary.

It's out now, Alee. I went and got as much as I could of the branches away from the big pile. I'll let someone else do the rest. That was way too scary.
Diane, that is too funny. You could probably have gotten enough heat from across the road to roast them. My little fire was way too hot. I can't imagine a house on fire. But the bigger pile is about as big as a house.

I had a logger friend pick up my old house and put it at the edge of my property, then I called the fire dept. and asked them to burn it for me and for $50. they did, then I called the neighbors and told them I was having a marshmellow roast that night. What a joke that fire was so big and hot we sat across the street in yard chairs eating raw marshmellows and laughing. I was so thank-ful I for the fire dept

I just went out and checked and it's almost out. I am so glad the bigger one didn't burn. I was scared to death. Yeah, I like small fires in a fireplace, too. I'll stick to that from now on!

Fire I love it in a fire place but other than that it is so unpredictable that it is just not fun. We have had slash fires up here too and we always make sure there is snow on the ground so it won't run.
