As I've been daydreaming the past few weeks of our future house, I've been thinking of layout not only in terms of practicality but also how I can decorate it. That's made me wonder -- what is your style?

I'm one of those people who may not know the name for what I like, but I know it when I see it. I love old things that can be used in new ways, chabby chic, bright pastels with some faded/worn pastels tossed in, but I also love red, blue, and yellow. That always leaves me in a quandry. Do I go with the bright pastels or the primary colors (with a worn look)? Hmmmmm . . . with a "new" house to dream of, I've tossed this one around alot lately.

Anyway, what is your style??

I like what I call "junque chic". I have an eclectic style, and with money always being tight, I just come up with ways to decorate that don't cost much. (I went as far as rescuing a dining table, four matching chairs and an upholstered chair from heading to the landfill when it was sitting behind our local post office...I've yet to re-furbish them, it'll be a Spring Break project in another week or so.) My favorite colors are red, sage, and gold, along with muted tones of those colors. I'm really starting to like pink, but then I also like black. So yeah, it's a rather eclectic mix. I have so many projects in the works, it will be the end of summer before I get them accomplished at least! (I also have a bright orange sofa that was left in our home and it needs a slipcover...another summer project, I'm sure!) If I were home enough, I might actually get some of this stuff done!

The end will justify the pain it took to get us here.

I love "french country" Lots of florals. "Waverly" fabric~~antiques~~
Dark wood like mahogany for a formal look in my livingroom but I also love the "cottage" look of white distressed furniture in my bedroom..
I dont really like "rustic" at all...
In my last house the bathroom had a "garden theme" with soft green walls and white wainscotting. I would love to do the same thing in our current home-Just as soon as we can afford another remodel~~

I love decorating threads! I decorate in strictly primitive. I love the look of at least 100 years ago and what I call "the poor farmpeople" style. I love old, peely, painted furniture, hardwood floors, quilts, yellowware, wooden bowls, enamelware, old jars, etc. I have homespun hung as curtains and some windows bare. Almost all my furniture are antiques or reproductions. Nothing new looking. We are in the process of putting in all wood floors (hate carpet) and redoing the bathrooms to look older. I like the blues, browns, mustard and black. I live in a tract home now, but hope to move in 4-5 years and gets some land for a small farm. If we can't build, I hope to find a house I can make look old. I do love my modern conveniences, but try to hide them!

Alison, I love that you would do this! I also love having old family things; I feel it's a connection to those that have gone before us. I also have an old chair, an Arts and Crafts rocker that my mother in law nursed all her babies in. It was old when she got it, too. It still has the original finish, and is so darned comfortable! It's next to the fireplace in the familyroom, with a comforter on it. When my mother in law passed, I couldn't believe that none of the other kids wanted it. They sort of set aside a lot of the 'old stuff' for me, because they knew I like it. To me, it's a treasure.

It's nice to know you understand.

mine is now cottage garden w/ a little farm thrown in BUT, I really want a change and am thinking soft & natural southwestern. I love the pale greens, creams, grey's and pale pink. All very soft, warm and comfy. Problem is I need to get alot of things. I've got a few dream catchers, lots of clay pots & things. I've got a great old sewing figure taller then me, and shes got on a pink & grey western dress w/ a light pink straw cowgirl hat. I've got a few Australian hats. I need stuff for our bedroom & bath but it's fun.

My style is Coastal Country Cottage. I live close to the beach.

I too like pastels, pink is my favorite, but I also love cobalt blue and burgundies. I balance my likes by keeping my walls and major pieces neutral. White walls, white and Natural wood, wrought iron, stone and terracotta. I bring in color through accessories. Richer colors in the fall and winter, lighter ones in the spring and summer and use transitional colors, like cobalt, that can go with either palate.

I use white as my neutral because the rooms of my house are dark at the wrong times of the day.

I have had the busy city life and the large "wheat" farm in Kansas as a child and now since I'm older (late 50's) and teaching my style is country cottage. I love Mary Emmerlings magazine, Country Living, Southern Living, Paula Deen's new magazine, Southern Lady and Cottage Living. I currently live in an older cottage-style house built in the early 1930's in a small southern town near a large city. Fall is my favorite season, so I love those colors. I have a lovely herb garden, vegetable garden, cut flower garden plus roses and my berry patch (lots of blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries). Very nice country cottage casual is my style. I like my creature comforts. We are currently into a major remodel of our cottage and keeping it in the vintage style. It needed a lot of repairs and expanded as it is tiny. We have a nice carriage house in back that my older daughter lives in while she finishes grad school. My husband is currently putting a new roof on the workshop and expanding that space. My bathroom is also currently ripped up as we re-tiled the bathtub/shower and putting tile on the floor.

I try to go for country cottage. Not too cutesy - very relaxing and comfortable. One of my daughter's friends once commented that, "nothing matches, but it all seems to go together." Lots of reds, golds, browns, some sage green.

I don't think I have a 'style' persay.......everything is something that I love or was given to me. I LOVE peely chippy painted ANYTHING....and like you...anything old that can be used again, but on the otherhand...I love things with a cottage look to them. Then...throw in some primitive...and there you have it. My kitchen is mostly white and red..love the 40's style in there. Just makes it fun to cook. My bedroom is soft...pale yellow on the walls...a handpainted dresser in roses that I did....and my bed is ALWAYS dressed in antique and vintage sheets and blankets. I NEVER use a whole sheet set...I think I like the mix of colors. And my grandmothers changing table is painted a antique white. I have a very small antique chandelier hanging over our bed..and a 'screen' made from 2 old farm doors where I have an old mirror hanging, and some dried herbs behind our bed...which is an old iron bed with it's peely paint. I waited a LONG time for that one. :o)
I think that you should live with the things that make your heart smile....I don't believe in buying a 'set' of furniture...I think things should be gathered...just like the old days..things where made when they needed them. Besides...makes it much easier on the 'ol budget. :o)

My style in my house revolves entirely around this chair that was given to my hubby. The chair belonged to his grandfather, was built around 1900; it's a beautiful dark wood, with a cranberry/burgundy colored leather seat. All the pictures in my living room have tones of cranberry and dark brown in them, I've bought a dark espresso colored entertainment unit. My couch, is a taupe/tan color, and I've got all different shades of red/ruby/cranberry throw pillows. And my walls are painted the color of chocolate milk! All types of browns and reds, and it's all due to one little old beautiful chair.

My farmhouse really doesn't have a "style" per se - it was built in 1875-ish, and some of the things I have here are around that old - a couple of rocking chairs and all of the original mouldings and windowframes. I'm especially proud of some of the original glass in the windows - it's wavy and bubbly and I absolutely LOVE it, although it does lend a somewhat, ummm, psychedelic view to the outdoors. ANYWAY, back to decorating style - I'm not really relaxed in rooms that have a lot of colors or knick-knacks in them, so I guess a farm-minimalist is my style. Beige and white are the main colors in the house, with red accents and a great oriental rug in the living room that was a present from my mom - the upstairs is peach and white, which is just beautiful in the morning sun, and the bathroom is a light mint green and white with a claw-foot tub that I painted the outside green and the claw feet like eagle feet (I just couldn't resist...). I hadn't really thought of my decorating style, and I guess what it boils down to is that I like it clean, and there can't be too many things to dust! We're surrounded by fields, and sometimes I think that the dust from ploughing and all that actually has a destination - my house!!!

XOXO, Libbie

I really like it when people match the decor of their house to the period of their house. Mine's a 140 year old farmhouse, so we have old stuff in here. The livingroom is very dressy, sort of French country. Mahogany furniture, gold leaf, George Stubbs prints, and porcelain. Colors are sage green, pink, and a sort of coffee with lots of cream. Diningroom is a bit more rustic because we don't have an eat-in kitchen. The table is HUGE and everything is a warm antique oak; the table's on a pedestal, and there's a loooong sidebar/breakfront, as well as an old icebox that doubles as a liquor cabinet. Colors are a deep yellow and rust, which I took out of a set of dishes my grandmother had. Three bookshelves hold my cookbook collection (and I need more room for more books!). It's more on the formal side, with cut crystal and Haviland, but I also have more rustic elements in there from time to time. My familyroom is much more rustic; leather furniture with hobnails, an old arts and crafts rocker that belonged to my mother-in-law, old boxes and rough wood. Some of the wainscoting was taken out of an addition to my barn; the former owners renovated, and saved these planks. Some of them are eighteen inches wide! My mantel is an old beam from the barn. Pictures of family are everywhere, and I have a special area I call The Rogue's Gallery, which contains pictures of my mother and my husband's mother, and our grandmothers. I like to pay tribute to the women who have gone before me. Kitchen is baskets and browns; it needs to be updated. Bedroom is being renovated right now. I'm stuck on a color scheme! Cool green and white? Yellow and sage? Hmmmm....

I am not really sure what to call my style either...my living room leans toward cabiny country I think..I hope...and the kitchen is sort of 1940's ...or will be when I am done....with John Deere theme thrown in. Our bedroom is woodsy cabin country I guess. I am most attracted to wood, and deep colors with worn edges..but I do love white painted wood too..gardeny looking things are attractive to me too.

as you'll soon see darlin' patti .. my style is somewhat 'eclectic' .. although rustic primitive is my most favorite. i have so many other style treasures that i adore .. so they all seem to just blend in. xo

I'm not designer coordinated either and I like too many different things to stick with one theme through out the house. We are moving into the new house next week. DH and I have ranch/western/indian decor for the family room, my girls want to have a beach theme in their room, and DH and I have kinda decided to do all log furniture for our new bedroom set. I really like the look of old farmhouse style for my kitchen and am leaning towards that. So as you can see I'm all over the place with my decorating themes as well but in my mind I can picture it and it seems to flow alright. Good luck with your new house!!

Beth, your home sounds lovely! Yes, I think that's what will probably evolve. In our present house, I don't have much of a style, but the master bedroom is more floral/pastels, and very calming, but the kitchen is brighter, the family room more muted, etc. Of course, the kids room are decorated in their style, which is how we wanted it. I think I have too many interests and loves to ever have one consistent decor that runs through the entire house. Plus, I'm just not that designer-coordinated!

Good Morning Miss Patti!
I like to have a mix of things. My living room is primary colors with red and blue and green. My dining room is very woody with the dark wood floors and pastel walls. my bedroom is very rose and burgandy, kinda with the french flair. So why not have rooms you love with different themes to them.
Hope your day is wonderful!
