I don't know how many of you know this, but I'm on a learners permit. The problem is I get really nervous everytime we go out and there have been times I've nearly pulled something really dumb (esp on left turns) that could've had bad results. I passed the written only missing 1 question,I know the rules of the road but have blank moments here & there. It's driving me crazy as Dad will be having his cataracts done soon & want to get over this mental hump so I can drive well, reliably, and not go thru head trips everytime I get behind the wheel. I also want him to be relaxed & not worry about my driving. My farmgirl "can do" spirit goes out the window when it comes to this. I'd really appreciate suggestions on feeling in control behind the wheel.

I know my Dad was not anticipating the head trips I've been going thru. And to be quite honest, neither was I. Wasn't sure if this was a normal thing or if my reaction was somewhat "peri-menapausal" as it really gets bad when I'm PMSing (and I am as of this writing) Learning to drive at 50 & after such difficult circumstances-I really admire that-esp to keep driving till 85! It's such a help to know that this will pass....eventually!

Sherrie, I had that horrible paranoid freezeup feeling for the whole first year after I got my license. You'll get over it with time. The more you drive, the more different situations and road conditions you survive, the easier it gets. And having a good, reliable car really helps.

Sherrie, my Great Aunt learned to drive at 50. Her husband did all the driving and he passed away at 48. She had to learn how to drive and she lived in Boston...one of the top 5 worst places to drive. She did it and she drove until she was 85..in BOSTON!! You can do it. Just remember, you are in control. : )

I know my Dad often wishes he could take me back 40 yrs when Calif traffic wasn't so heavy. "Driving was enjoyable then" he often tells me & when different historical programs show what traffic was like in the 60's & 70's,I'm absolutely shocked. So few cars on the freeway! Thank you for taking pride in what I'm doing & All your stories have helped tremendously-makes me feel more normal & not like a woman havin a crisis.

I grew up driving across the prarie and the first time I drove in town I was terrified. There were SO MANY cars...hehe...it was Chamberlain SD (population 3000), but I was freaking out. Now I cruise through Saint Louis, Tulsa, Little Rock, Nashville, Jacksonville, etc like I own them. You will be just fine in a month or two Sherrie. I'm really proud of you for steping up and doing what needs to be done.

If we had country roads, believe me I'd be on em! But it makes me feel better to know that I'm not the only one to go thru these head trips on driving, and that you ladies can relate.

I hated driving when I first learned...did the same thing you've mentioned...just freaking out, getting nervous, and doing things you logically know to do otherwise. The thing I'd have to recommend is get totally comfortable with the vehicle you're driving first. If you know your car really well, how it handles, how it responds, etc., then the DRIVING can become automatic, leaving your thoughts free to respond to TRAFFIC when you're on the road.

So take the car out on a country road and just go for it. :) The more you get confident in your actual driving, the easier it'll be to take on traffic and traffic signals.

Make sense??

Thank you all for the advice-I did have three lessons from a driving school & they were so-so...made more for the teen who had experience behind the wheel of their parents car-not for a middle age chick who'd never been behind the wheel at all. I'll admit I need to practice more & like Diane,I want my freedom & not worry about how to get places on my own. It's been frustrating as I usually catch on to things very quickly but this has been a whole different can of worms. I'm just wondering when I'll pass this "freeze stage" and actually start to see driving as being fun,or at least don't mind it.

Road trip I first learned how to drive on aroad trip of 1000 miles or more you have to be on your toes. You can do this and if you get in a pinch and don't feel ok turn on the flashers and slow down.

Take your time, Do not be in a hurry if the person behind you makes you nervous let them go by. Practice & Practice are very important. I have been driving for over 40 years and I still hate it. But I would not let my fear take my freedom from me so I took drivers ed. which at that time I was lucky and got in the class free (kinda- I babysat the teachers kids)Don't listen to your friends listen to your head. practice and time and have faith in yourself. You can do this. Relax and even if you only go around the block each time will get easier. If you live in California you may not have the challange of snow, that is the pits. Good luck and be careful.

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.

Practice, Practice, Practice...and realize, YOU ARE in control. I actually had to pay for driving lessons because my mom was a nervous wreck after teaching my sister. It was much more relaxing and informative to me AND you get a discount on your insurance for taking the lessons. Good luck and you CAN DO farmgirl!!! See ya'll on the roads!!
