Posted - Sep 17 2009 : 6:13:18 PM I had never heard of this before a farmgirl mentioned it in another post.
Do many of you do this?
I'm curious to know what you've found and what you've left behind?
Please tell me about your adventures with this!

Posted - Sep 22 2009 : 4:38:57 PM My DH said he would try it someday but that he is busy (and he is) now so it may have to wait a while. I went for a walk in the woods at the end of my street it's not very big and you can see where some kids had a campfire, I could not believe the junk in the woods. It's near a mall and filled with bags and just junk. I saw a nice bike in the deep ditch. I called the police to report it as it was probley stolen, I haven't been back but I think I'll go tomorrow for an hour or two and pick up some of the junk. I just can't believe how awful it is. We had a shared woods with about 15 families and it was always beautiful and you could let your kids play in it. I don't want my grandson around any of it.

Posted - Sep 21 2009 : 11:25:26 PM I am a letterboxer. I like it better than geocaching, because you don't need a GPS. Plus there is so much creativity involved in the stamps that are carved.
I've found letterboxes all around the country. And planted a few as well. I don't have kids, but it is a fun thing to do with my friends who do have kids. I highly recommend it.

Posted - Sep 21 2009 : 6:30:44 PM We're Letterboxers here! We've previously used a store bought stamps, but have now carved our own. You can print out clues from here: http://www.atlasquest.com/
You follow the clues to find the box. Inside you'll find a stamp and logbook. You take their stamp and stamp it into your logbook - then stamp your stamp into theirs and sign it with your "trail name". Hide it well and you're on your way.
My girls & I usually write something in the logbook if there's enough room - like saw a deer on our hike to find the box. Other people sometimes do the same. Date it and sign it.
It does get the kids out hiking, for further than they'd normally go. ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif)
We have a GPS and have tried once to find a geocache without luck. We're going to try some close to our house.

Posted - Sep 18 2009 : 7:36:52 PM I have never heard of this before. I am going to look up my town and see if there are any. What a really fun thing to do. I would get a kick out of digging something up just to see what someone else thought was important enought to bury.

Posted - Sep 18 2009 : 07:12:53 AM We love to go caching but I haven't got to go very much lately. My favorite time to go is in the fall and winter when the weeds aren't so bad and it's not so hot. It's one of my favorite things to do out in nature. Like I said in the other post geocaching can take you to places and let you see things you might otherwise not have seen.

Posted - Sep 18 2009 : 07:01:27 AM We go letterboxing! Well, we did. More when my oldest was younger. Lately we haven't but a friend mentioned it to me and she would like to try with her kids, so I thought I'd break out the letterboxing stuff and give it a go again! http://www.letterboxing.org/
Here they are searching out clues!

Posted - Sep 18 2009 : 03:43:48 AM This became popular a few years ago
Kind of fun
If you have a cell phone w/ a GPS or I guess just a GPS you can go online and find coordinates in the state where you live and go "treasure hunting"
Some Geocaches and really easy to find and have bigger items you can trad out, others are really tiny. So the tiny ones have just basic info on pieces of paper you can relay to other searchers back online. |

Posted - Sep 17 2009 : 9:31:25 PM i went once with my in laws. my father in law and brother in law were in charge of the logistics, but it was fun! we just got some coordinates or something and went galavanting through the hills. We found the spot, but nothing was there :(. It was fun though, just as a good excuse to hike and be nosey.
try it if you have a GPS. it's worth doing at least once :)

Posted - Sep 17 2009 : 8:34:25 PM Hi Diane, One of the farmgirls said to go to this site. There's a place that you can type in your zip code and it will let you know how many geo cache sites there are in your area. I'd never even heard of it before today.
Sounds like a lot of fun, but I want more details!

Posted - Sep 17 2009 : 8:26:29 PM I also read the other post and was going to ask the same question, I have never heard of it but it sounds like fun. How do you know where to look? How do you get started doing this?
