It is actually the house my Mammaw lived in before she passed on. It is an old house, at least a 100 something. Currently it is set up as a three bedroom but the attic space can be converted into three more bedroom and that would free up a room downstairs to be a dining room. Oh she needs alot of work, but I just LOVE old houses. I don't like the heat bills that go along with them however.

My aunt is willing to rent it to me for $283/ month. I would have a yard for a garden and clothesline. Fence around the yard for the kids and the dog. It also has a cellar. I was not brave enough to venture down into it tonight. So I'm not sure as to the shape it is in. It also does not have a washer/dryer hookup. But cousin Bobby has ran new electrical and is currently working on the water pipes. OH and it has one of those old claw foot bathtubs. I have wanted one of those forever.

I think my mom is trying to talk me out of it. But right now me and the kids are in a two bedroom trailer with outrageous heating and cooling bills. I'm kinda leaning to the Farngirl Up and do it. What would you gals do?

And so it goes that when something is meant to be, everything seems to just magically fall into place. Congratulations Melanie! btw, I just moved from Los Angeles 1 year ago where my rent for a 2+ bedroom house with a big yard right next to the airport (very loud) was the whopping price of $3250.00 a month.

Honey, you got a DEAL!

It's a GO!!!

I spoke with my aunt a couple of hours ago. We do not have a move in date set yet, but it will be before the year is out. Possibly as soon as October!!! I'm so excited!!! As soon as I got off the phone with her I called my mom. She spoke with my other aunt and uncle and they are going to buy my place. Everything is just falling right into place!

Thank you for all the support. Farmgirls are the BEST!!!

The good thing about renting is that you can always change your mind and move somewhere else if this doesn't work out. I'd go for it. The rent sounds really cheap and since it's a family house wouldn't it be like having that long past family member(s) giving you hugs everytime you came home? This sounds like one of those opportunities that you'd kick yourself over if you didn't take advantage of it.

OH yes Nancy Jo there are lots of things in the house! My mammaw was a big time packrat. LOL My aunt said I'm welcome to use any of the furniture that's left.

I did some calling around today to see what it will cost to have the utilities transfered as well as phone and priced a U-Haul while I was at it.
Because I had a really high natural gas deposit where I am at now and the deposit in Mammw's house is not as high, I will have about $230 refunded to me from the gas company. That money will cover having the water turned on, the cable, phone and internet transfered over and even enough left over to rent the U-Haul. Can you believe it?! (the electric won't cost anything to transfer over.)

Now just to wait till my aunt gets home from work to see how much she will ask for deposit or if she will want a deposit and first month's rent.
If she wants both, and that's what landlords usually want, it will take me a couple of months to get it together, but if she would let me move in for just the first month's rent then my hiney is outta here!!
As far as my mobile home goes. I own it, just rent the lot. I'm going to ask my other aunt and uncle if they would be interested in buying it from me for $500. Their place is in such bad shape. And while mine isn't a dream home, the roof and the floors are solid and the heat and air both work.

I think my momma's biggest concern right now is the well out back. She is scared to death my youngest will get on top of it and do a dance and fall in. It is covered with a piece of half rotten plywood. I told her that I have a plan worked out that I can re-brick around the well and cover it with a concrete slab and that should take care of that fear for the time being.

Oh and guess what I thought was really kinda cool?-- it has like an extra large mailbox right next to the porch. Just right for receiving farmgirl mail. I'll have to doll it up thought. LOL

I have about another hour before I can call my aunt. Keep your fingers crossed for me please.

What a wonderful opportunity! Sounds like you are in the right place at the right time. A sign for sure. What a great place for the kids and dog, great memories are coming your way. Sure you may not have all the comforts of a 'new' home but what memories you will build for your family and teach your children many good lessons about 'farm' life. Take the challange. P. S. My house is over 100 to and I absolutely love my claw foot tubs!! They are to die for. By the way, I remodeled this house by myself and live alone. Sounds like a dream go for it. There are things to be done for the heat systems you find them and it will work out.

Melanie, that sounds like an opportunity too good to pass up. The rent sounds very fair too. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Wow! That is awesome rent! I would go for it! I agree- bundle up in the winter and you can either make or buy insulated drapes for the windows and another way to doll up the house and still save money is to make quilts for the walls. It will add another layer of insulation and be pretty! Oh and one thing that so many people forget is to put those foam insulators in all the light sockets and wall puggins and to check the weather stripping on the doors!

I would go for it! Keep the heat just high enough so the pipes don't freeze and go to the thrift and buy some wool sweaters for everyone - that's what they do in Europe! Good Luck!

I just had a thought-- the other day I was browsing some seed sites and decided to request a couple of catalogs. I didn't have a clue where I was going to put a garden out at but I just knew I would have one somewhere. Maybe that was a sign. LOL

Start packing, move to your Mammaw's house and put a rocking chair on your Christmas wish list.
Sounds wonderful.

I'd be rocking on the front porch and soaking in the claw foot tub before my mom knew I even moved! LOL You follow your heart and do what you think is best for you and your kids.
