Have you girls heard of tin canning??? It has nothing to do with peaches or apples etc. :)

In New Zealand after a farming couple was married and came home from honey moon. The night they return, all their friends? wait until about midnight and then we get bin lids, pots, tins, any metal type thing and bang the heck out of it, while going around the house.
Thats called a Tin canning and is also a welcome home. Couple then have to get up and we have a party.
Is alot of fun. :)

The practice of "shiveree" is alive and well in NE Iowa!

If it's not illegal, unsafe, or immoral, why not try anything once? Who knows? You may come back for a second helping!

Hi Jan, unfortunately it is very rarely done now. Kids of today, dont seem to see this as fun. What we have started doing now, is doing tin caning for 50th birthdays.:) Gives them a heck of a shock, but is a great laugh and fun.

I remember that scene in Oklahoma. The whole pot banging.

Helen, that is so fun that you told us about that! In America we have a long standing tradition that people tie tin cans to the back of the newlyweds car before they go on their honeymoon......then when they drive away, it makes a heck of a racket.I wonder if that came from your tradition, or vice versa?

I saw that sort of thing in the movie Oklahoma, but it happenend on the wedding night before they left on their honeymoon - grabbed the couple, and with lots of folks banging on pots and pans and such, took the couple out to a haystack and put them up there to stay
the night - they called it a "shivery". They would rescue the couple in the morning......not quite the same as what you described, but I recall them banging on the pots and pans and making quite a racket!!! Looked like and sounded like fun.

Yes Anne, is an old timer thing to do, but I am an old timer. :( lol

The only time I have seen that was on the mini series the Thorn Birds, when the daughter was married to the sheep shearer. I have also heard about it here in the states but it was an "old timer" thing to do. I don't know of anyone doing it nowadays. I could be wrong.
