If you had the opportunity to go back to college (or to go to college for the first time) what would you major in and what would you do with your degree?

I have my associates in Nursing, and if I ever went back to school it would to be a Midwife. I love it when I get to deliver a baby and I have always thought that as my calling.

how sweet it is to love some one, how right itis to care

Firemama-mortuary science? That sounds cool & appeals to the "goth girl" inside me that makes an occasional appearance! (Think Abbey from the CIS series)
If I went back,I think it'd be definately music. I'd like to teach the more folky instruments like mountain dulcimer and mandolin. (Tho I know I can do that without a degree)

Suzie, good for you for getting your BSN!! My mom started back to school (from scratch) at 47, got her BSN in Nursing at 51 and her MSN a few years later. It can be done, no matter when in your life!!

I am planning to return to school shortly (have to get finances in order first) and I would like to become a Registered Dietitian.

I just did that. I have been an RN for 15 years with an two year degree and for the last 10 years I have been taking one to two classes a semester. I am very proud to say at the age of 50 I got my BSN in nursing. I am now a Texas Tech alumni.

My minister preached before easter to not give something up, but do something new. I took up knitting, because I inherited all of my mothers needles. I have made several scarfs and on my second prayer shawl.

I know knit and purl now and there are several other stitches to learn.

I have learned to not stop learning. I am also learning that when I am not learning something new then my brain slows to the slug stage.

YOU ARE NEVER TO OLD TO LEARN. Just take one class a semester and just do it. There are so many online classes now so go for it.

Agriculture and Journalism. Would loved to have written for a farm/ranch magazine. My second choice would be to get a law degree and join the Navy so I could be a JAG lawyer. Third, I would be a Forest Ranger so I could work in a State or National park. I guess I'll just stay being a retired homemaker and gardener/chicken farmer. I do take the Hort class at our local community college. I keep making the same A and 3 credits over and over.

I would for sure go for a degree in psychology. I have always wanted to help abused women and children.

I did just that 6 years ago. Had a degree in business for 20 years. Went back to college and got my BS in nursing and have never looked back. I can go to any poedunk town in the world and have a good paying job. I never have to worry about layoffs. I can quit one job and have another in 2 hours and go back to the first one if I ever decide to. Don't get me wrong I'm not a job jumper. But in todays economy it is very nice not to have the worry of losing your job. And the pay, well if you get lucky like I did, and fall into just the right one it's as good as a entry level doctor. And I help save lives one at a time.

Begin each morning with a song in your heart.

I already have a BS and a MA in special education, and I'm about 10 credits from an Ed Specialist (which is between a MA and a PhD) I've got certificates in a variety of disability areas and some gen ed credentials as well. Some days I think just finishing up the EdS would be the way to go. I'm so close. That EdS could very well set me back about 12-15k.... But other days I'm really drawn to getting another MA (or PhD) as a psychologist. There just aren't any psychologists around this immediate area that aren't "drug happy" or that specialize in adolescent support.

A lot of states are doing that now, Jonni. Isn't that fantastic?!!! In Missouri you can go to school for free to become a teacher as long as you sign a contract to work in a low income school district for 4 years after graduating. I think it's fantastic!

Education. Kentucky is offering grants for degrees in education for teachers who would teach math, science or history in rural schools. I say count me in!

My dream is a business degree with a sideline of medical transcraption. I really enjoy that and seems now you need a degree to get into that field.

Yes, and I absolutely do agree with Dawn. I think more and more people are interested in "reviving" the arts of home made things. Like cheese making, gardening, soap making etc. And, like Dawn, I do believe there is a tremendous need for this type of education.

Sounds like we think a lot a like. Have you seen Dawn's post on A Farm of My Own, entitled My Inspiration? Now, that's the kind of thing I'd love to do. I'm hoping Dawn is more than successful with it. Maybe it'll inspire others to do it in other areas!

Actually, I was thinking the same thing Julie. I've thought about several different avenues. Originally I wanted to go back and get my law degree. But I REALLY HATE working in an office. It feels unnatural to me. I was thinking I would like to get a degree that would allow me to possibly work in an extension office or something along the lines of teaching organic gardening, etc. The kinds of things all of us already to, but teaching other people that no matter where they live, they can still be self-sufficient to some extent.

Without a doubt -- a double major in Agriculture and Home Ec. I've got a Fine Arts major now, but never finished my degree. I've been seriously considering going back, but it'll just take too much money that is sorely needed on the Plantation for now. Maybe one day....

What about you, Sarah? What would your major be?
