I went shopping for a birthday present for my daughter in law. She is pregnant and I thought a couple new tops would be nice to have. I went to 3 stores, not a maternity top in site. Then I even looked in the patterns, NO patterns either. What the heck is a pregnant girl to wear? I loved wearing maternity clothes, lots of room and very comfortable and cute to boot.

May I suggest some yoga style pants?? That is what I wore even after I delivered. Very comfy and affordable. I even have seen them sold at Old Navy at certain times of the years.

thanks for all the thoughts. It just kind of blew me away that no one handles maternity clothes any more. and then not even finding any patterns. I did find a couple loose tops and gave her. I told her it would not hurt my feelings at all if she took them back and got something else she needed.
In a few years the styles will change and we will be able to find decent clothes!

i spent the last 2 years pregnant. i have a 2month old and a 15 month old. there has been this trend with tops that are really loose and billowy around the middle and are tight at the bottom. there are tons of these in little "fashion" stores around me. I lived in those. and dresses. I wore a ton of dresses.

here's a link to the kind of shirt i'm talking about. and the fabric is real stretchy:

so those aren't links, but just copy and paste them

I am currently pregnant with my third and this time it was off season from my other two so I needed to buy a few items. Our local ShopKo (like a Walmart) had a very small selection. I wasn't able to find any patterns in the fabric store and I live so far out, it was hard to get to a big city for a Motherhood maternity. So around here we do a lot of second hand swapping or borrowing from friends. I know that isn't what you're probably looking for in a gift, but it is economical and practical.

When my friends sister was pregnant she too had trouble finding real maternity clothes. She used to buy a larger size shirt I think :) But for the pants she HAD to go to the specialty stores here too. Strange because there used to be a large selection in one of our department stores not too long ago . Now I don't know ofcourse, not being pregnant I don't look at maternity clothes ;)

BUT I also agree on the fabric stores. There is only one in the next town and I always have a peak (and most of the time look in their bargain department ;) )

Old Navy has some really cute maternity stuff on-line and the prices are too bad either.

I've found motherhood to be the best.

With my first pregnancy I didn't buy from them because of the price. My second pregnancy I was able to cash in my mypoints.com points and got 75 dollars worth of gift certificates, I bought off clearance and did pretty good.

This time, I've turned in points again for 50 dollars worth of certificates, and I've spent around 100 dollars at Motherhood. (I had really hardly anything but a few things from Walmart with pregnancy one, pregnancy two, I only bought a few outfits with the 75 dollars), and this time, only a few more, mainly some shirts, two skirts, and a few other things. I've bought two nice blouses off the clearance rack that were only 15 dollars, more then I would pay for my regular clothes, but pretty good deals for motherhood.

I've finally figured out though I'll be pregnant a few more times, so might as well buy some clothes.....my first pregnancy I didn't dress like other women I see though! I just didn't show so thankfully didn't need much, since I didn't have any money, that was a good thing! After being pregnant with twins though, my belly shot out right away, and this time too. So I have to have maternity clothes now, or look crazy like the other pregnant when I see!

From the look of a lot of the women walking around there seems to be a trend to just let it all hang out. I have only seen about 3 women who are expecting wear clothes that cover their stomachs. I think expecting is a wonderful thing but whatever happen to modesty. Mostly if they are covered they wear those really snug tops so you can see the whole shape. Oh well call me old fashioned but some things are better kept under wraps. I remember loose being more comfortable myself.
Maybe everyone will have to start making their own patterns or shopping at the thrift to find something to use as a pattern maybe.

God is good....all the time.

How frustrating! I was able to find maternity tops at JCPenneys and Motherhood when I was pregnant 6 years ago. You could always trust the plus sizes if you can't find maternity tops. I hope you find something nice for your daughter-in-law.

I only bought "work" pants at Motherhood and a dress for the office when I was pregnant with Vi (last time, this year!). I bought all my casual jeans, sweaters, shirts and work tops second hand at Once Upon a Child or other consignment shops. I had a TON of clothing options, and spent about $50.00 on my work wardrobe. I really loved all my clothing, though...mostly it came from the Gap (the first time round, anyway :)). My mom bought me some great stuff online for my birthday at Ann Taylor. They have a very nice maternity selection, and petites, too.

The only problem I had with maternity clothes was the patterns--who wants to see a 150 lb. woman in a Salvador Dali painting? Seriously, tone DOWN the swirls and giant flowers!!!

Michele~ It was very aggravating for me when I was trying to find maternity clothes, too. First I just went to the mall and went to the major department stores and two said they didn't even have maternity departments. Penneys and Sears both had some, but a very small selection. Oddly enough, Sears had the best selection of nursing bras, though.

Walmart doesn't have a maternity section, either. We have a store here called Once Upon a Child that is basically a used clothing and furniture store for children. They also have a large maternity section where I found several pairs of pants.

The stores like Motherhood and the other maternity stores are very expensive, too. I have found several cute things at Target and Old Navy. Actually, almost all the clothes I wore while pregnant with my last son were from Old Navy, and honestly, they are about all I have been wearing this summer, too.

Good luck in your search and congratulations on your future grandchild!

you aren't kidding Michele! the only place that has any real maternity clothes are stores like Motherhood Maternity or TWo Peas in a Pod online. Those cost a fortune though. I always tell Hubby..you can find cute maternity clothes until you're the one expecting ;) every once in a while you can find some cute stuff at Target or Babies R Us but youve really got to search for it.
hope you find what you are looking for.

Do you mean there are no maternity patterns in the store or do the pattern companies just not make them anymore. I would be dissappointed too.
I am really put out because it seems to be a lost art to most retailers. Gee, I can't even get fabric without traveling 50 or 60 miles at least.
Hope you find a solution.

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.
