Did anyone have a chance to enter and support your local Fair and Rodeo this year?

I love going to see all the wonderful homemade items. I finally got up enough nerve to enter something this year. My hubby and I entered our homemade wines and came home with two 1st's two 2nd's and two 3rd's. It was alot of fun and I am already excited about next year. I'm thinking of entering some of my jams and herbs as well as a woodworking project and quilt. I better get busy now!!!!

Kelly, yeah, I guess I was bragging a little, lol. I love it when the little ones livestock is nicer and easier to handle then the older kids. The older of the 2 wants to enter a steer next year, its going to be very hard for him to understand hes just not big enough yet.

You should be bragging Teresa...good job! Congrats to your grandsons too. I used to be the poultry barn superintendent at our fair and I LOVED watching the little guys interact with their critters.

Well I am happy to report that both my grandsons chicken and rabbit trios got prizes. The New Zealand rabbit meat pen got 3rd in his age group of 23 entries, they were shown by Jeremy, he is 6 yrs old. Johnny who is going to be 5 Oct 1st, got 5th place for his Cornish game hens trio, meat pen for his age group of 17 entries, and Johnny was the youngest in his group. I am so very proud of them both. My D-in-laws canned peaches got 1st prize, and her canned green beans got 2nd, I am very proud of her also, ( I taught her everything she knows about canning, and yes I'm bragging). the steers that I sold along with the meat goat did not place in the top 5 in their classes, but still looked good and will auction at decent prices for the kids.

Well, we survived the fair! I am still exhausted though

Both girls did very well with their livestock and other entries. Lots to keep them busy and they were rewarded for all thier hard work.

I entered some stuff for the first time in a long time. I was really excited that my 100% whole wheat bread earned a blue ribbon, and my venison jerky (seasoned with my own mix of spices) took best of show for all dehydrated foods! I was thrilled and humbled at the same time.

Now we have a year to recouperate and plan.

I entered two ugly lamps in the annual 'Lynne's Paradise Cafe Ugly Lamp contest' at the Ky. State Fair. LOL! When I took mine in, there were 206 other entries. Judging is Saturday afternoon. My entry came in third a few years ago. The ribbon was huge and ruffly. Now the prize is breakfast once a week for a year. :) Got my fingers crossed.

Well Sue...good for you for trying. I'm sorry you didn't win. Maybe next year?

We hauled the hogs in today and the rest of the stuff goes in tomorrow. Our kitchen table is loaded with stuff that has to go in. My DD is just finishing her last batch of goats cheese (she's making a lemon cheese that is similar to cheve'). She really should have had that done by now...live and learn I guess.

The dog show was on Friday and my youngest DD and her corgi got reserve champion in off-leash obedience for 4H. It was her dogs first show off-leash, so we were pretty excited.

I'll check in next week after it's all said and done and I get a chance to catch my breath [and have a long-island ice tea ;) ]

Oh I love the fairs! I don't enter anything but my best friend (also my daughters MIL) always enters and always wins blue ribbons. You should see some of the things she makes all year to enter. She makes the most beautiful knitted items. A lot of them are baby items. A beautiful pleated knitted dress with a matching beret. Sweater sets, mittens, socks, scarves you name it. She also quilts and sews, makes handmade bears. Plus canning and baking. She is one awesome farm girl crafts person! I can pick her stuff out a mile away! They also show sheep. It really is a wonderful time when we go to fair. We are lucky because we have 2 right in our area. Plus we go to the state fair. Which is only an hour and a half from us. I am just like a kid when I go I get all excited!

Our fair starts the last friday of this month and lasts 11 days,I didn't enter anything this time, but, both my grandsons have rabbits and chickens in, and my d-in-law has some canned fruits and veggys entered. Two steers that I sold to 4-h'ers are entered and looking really good, along with a meat goat, nubian/boer cross, so I always hope for them to win.

Well girls, my applesauce and dills did not win but the other item from a fellow farmgirl won an honorable mention. There were four similar items entered, no first or second place ribbon was given. Three out of the four won the honorable mentions!

I can't wait to send it to her and then I will let you all know who and what it is!

Our Fair caught me completely unaware this year, just didn't think of it nor did I see any posters/promotional stuff about it. People around here just 'know' when it is.

Next year, I'm ready! I want to join the photography club and learn to take better pics and then enter them in next years Fair. I don't think they have a horse show anymore but some local clubs do.

I have entered a few things in our fair. A jar of dill pickles and a jar of applesauce. Also a surprise that I can't reveal yet. It's something that another farmgirl made for me and I have entered it. If it wins I want to send her the ribbon!

Will let you all know what comes of this as the fair opens tomorrow and we hope to check things out at that time!

Sarah, Australorps are my Favorites too!

Belle, we grow some of our grapes. Half of the wines we did this time were fruit wines. Apple, Cranberry, Plum, and Crabapple. I've even made Red Beet wine in the past. Tastes like Cherries believe it or not.

Our entry day is tomorrow. If anyone has read any of my post the last couple of day, you'll know that we are up to our eyeballs in geting stuff ready. The dining room table is the place for everything that is ready, waiting to go out to the car in the morning. I am still picking stuff from the garden. Picked a half bushel of tomatoes this morning and still don't have 4 that look like they should go to the fair. Being in 4-H for so many years, I judge my stuff before I take it. If I don't think it will win, it stays at home. last year I learned my lesson though. I did not take garlic, didn't think it was good enough. The only entry was some of the poorest looking garlic I have ever seen. In fact, I usually throw it away if it looks that bad. Anyway, still have to pick 3 or 4 different kinds of peppers and cut okra again in the morning. I have all my canning done except for 1 pint of garlic that Ole Ron is still working on. I'm entering a couple of antique pieces and Ron is entering a big ole knife that he made. The baking is comming along. French bread is done, rolls are rising and will make a loaf of whole wheat later in the bread machine. Can't believe there is a bread machine class. Can't see that it requires ANY cooking skills to dump stuff in the pan.

All the blue ribbon winners in culinary is placed in an auction. I think it should be limited to 4-H and educationas. But it is for all entries. Last year I received $30 for my loaf of bread machine bread from the auction. And since I never turn down money, It is OK with me. It usually goes for chairity anyway.

Heather, do you grow your grapes?

Congratulations! What kinds of wine? We're just gearing up for our fair. The 4-H dog show is this coming Friday, horses Saturday and Sunday, the hogs weigh in on Monday, rabbits on Tuesday. My girls are also entering some jams and jellies, photos, and some baked goodies. I'm entering some pepper glaze, a couple of jams, dried apricots, venison jerky, dried mushrooms, a few flowers and veggies from the garden, and for the first time this year, a loaf of whole wheat bread. Needless to say, the sleep-o-meter is going to be a little low for the next couple of weeks.
