Unbelievable-the Governator of California has decided in his ultimate "wisdom" that in order to get the state out of the red that the state should sell the fairgrounds. The local residents are up in arms over this-the grounds bring in a lot of $$ to the area, provides jobs and there's a lot of commerce & educational things that go on such as getting up close & personal with livestock. The price tag is astronomical, and the land can't be used for commercial purposes such as condos & the like. The fair has been in existance for over a century.

The state of Illinois is in dire straits as well. They pledge so much money to the local fairs and then don't come thru on paying them. There is talk about some counties merging their fairs together. But I feel for the citizens of California. There is always something on the news about all the trouble going on in that state.

They were threatening the same thing about the San Diego County Fairgrounds/Del Mar Fair WHILE the fair was going on. I think it was to get us into a "whatever it takes" attitude about the state budget. It would be a HUGE mistake to let either of those (OC or SD) fairgrounds go!

The price tag is in the multi millions, sad to say. I can't believe that there's nothing that can be done-as city raised but farmgirl at heart,I see where we really need these fairs! You just can't drive thru the south bay area & see sheep & such due to zoning laws. (otherwise I'd have chickens for fresh eggs) Besides, arts like spinning your own yarn (something I'm learning slowly with a drop spindle) are often only seen at fairs like O.C. California is really going thru a terrible time.

Can the people of Orange County organize and buy the fair grounds and continue to have the fair every year?? Just wondering. I would Hate to loose our fair.

I wonder if citizens could get a petition going with enough signatures to force a referendum on this? Every time I hear bad news for California on the news I feel so badly for all the folks living there.

It doesn't seem so. A lot of info as far as selling & such are being kept hush hush so the community is seemingly being kept in the dark. First education was cut,the arts & music in schools are being cut,now Arnold wants to sell of a lot of historical tourist attractions owned by the state. Doesn't make sense to me to go selling things that make the state money. Maybe the state should sell off the governors mansion & stop all the ridiculous perks that a lot of your higher ranking state employees have been getting.

Doesn't the community have a say in the matter?
