Please help me by suggesting gift ideas for a little girl turning ONE! I know many of you have small children or grandchildren, and mine are older....so HELP me please come up with ideas!
I don't plan to spend any more than $20, don't mind making something simple, would love it to be something timeless, old-fashioned, or practical, to make her little life go more smoothly. Or just something really neat that she would enjoy!?
Any suggestions are very much appreciated! Thank you!

Thanks to each of you for your ideas!
Since her grandparents are giving her a play kitchen, I ended up getting her a Fisher Price tea set, that says "please" and "thank you" among other things. Also making her a tiny apron with cupcake fabric & some felt "sugar cookies".

The thing my daughter loved best for her first birthday was a wooden toy that had has those coated wires with wooden balls that you can glide on them like you see at doctor's offices. It on the sides there are flipping letters and animals and stuff to play with. She really loved that. She also really loved her baby dolls.

how about one of the Yo-Yo animal toys....or, my emaily has always loved my "scrappy " flip flops....for a 1 year old you can buythe flip flops with the straps on the back, so they do't come off...and I cut strips of material with pinking shears, then tie them along the toe straps, after tied, I trim them to only about 2 inches long.....some people make them with LONG fabric strips...but that probably wouldn't be a good Idea for a 1 year old...they are SOOOO fun and easy to make...Emily has so many pairs, that she picks according to her mood or outfit now.
Ps...I even have a couple of pairs for myself....I can send pics if you want to give you an idea...

I found a wonderful CD & book set called "Philadelpia Chickens" It's hilarious and fun for the child as well as the parents. I buy it for everyone with a small child and get nothing but rave reviews!

Honestly, I'm trying to think of what we bought our niece Ava at one. It was something huge and she didn't play with it for a second (she was the first grandchild and everyone thought she needed something absolutely over the top)...but, we bought for our friend's little girl, Olive, when she turned one, one of those upright "push" things (I think it was made by Fisher Price) that "pops" colored balls. I know I had one when I was little and it was my favorite toy...turns out it's Olive's, too. They also have little pull toys that look like bumblebees, where their wings flap, etc...I think we might have paid $15.00 for our gift. I also always try to give books because it's such an important part of childhood (for both parent and child!).

If you are able to sew, what about an old fashioned rag doll? Little girls love these and they don't cost that much. I always give books, try not to ever give anything plastic. Good luck, Carol

When my daughter was 1, she loved to color, but you can imagine at 1 what a mess that made. For her first birthday, a friend of ours gave her these pictures that you colored with special markers. The markers were clear and didn't show up on anything but the paper. She got a little notepad/coloring pad thing that worked with the same markers.
We thought it was an awesome idea. She could sit and doodle away and we didn't have to worry about a big mess. They are called wonder art or something like that. Walmart and Kroegers has them in the office supply section where you would find the crayons and markers (not the school supply part).
Another one that my daughter loved, is baby dolls that she could dress. At that young, we didn't give her things like bottles or shoes, or whatever for the baby, but the soft outfits and soft babies were the perfect thing to keep her occupied. She did pretty well at putting the clothes off and on. Sometimes she needed a little help though :D
