So. . .I'm showing my electronic ignorance--somehow in the past 9 years while I've been busy with babies/toddlers/etc the electronic world has passed me by. My good old walkman :) is going bad and I'm in the market for another some such thing that I can go running/walking with etc.

So--help me understand the differences of ipods/mp3 from your point of view if you don't mind! Thanks so much!

i just learned this yesterday, and ladies correct me if i'm wrong... but my hubby says the biggest difference between the two is -

- ipods you can only download and listen to music you buy on itunes or whatever website you buy music from and will not play music just from your computer, or that you have burned to your computer. which is a major drawback for me because i that's where all of my music comes from, from cd's or from what i have on the computer already.

- mp3 will play all those files from your computer in mp3 format. i have bought songs in mp3 format from amazon and walmart, so you can still "buy" songs for an mp3 as well.

but maybe the ipod will only play that one format of music, the kind you buy from itunes (or wherever). these are the main differences i know of and why i would never buy an ipod.

Now see with my MP3 Player I can plug it into as many computers as I want. It doesn't need any special information to dock with any computer so I can plug it into my computer, my husbands computer, or the School Mac and it works great at each place. To me, only being able to use one computer or even one type of computer is very limiting, but that is just me!

I have a Zune and besides being able to listen to my favorite music, it holds pictures, has an FM radio, a microphone, and you can even download movies for a fee (Never done it; the screen is so small I probably couldn't make out what was happening). I love it cause I can listen to it either with headphones or hook it up to a speaker system (available for about ten dollars.) Mine is only 2GB but that's plenty enough for most people. I would suggest talking to a salesclerk before you buy anything--I'm almost overwhelmed by mine and it's one of the simpler ones. Hope this helps.

Alee this is true but you can only doc the iPod to one computer at a time anyway. If you switch even between two PCs you have to reset it because your information is only stored on one computer. I only have one computer so switching is not an issue.

I have the iPod touch and my hubby has the iPhone. We both love them! You can use wifi with both of these which is awesome. Most of the time when I am on MJF I an on my iPod!!!

The only draw back that I know about is that if you have an Ipod it can only be used on one type of computer- so if you have a Mac it formats itself to a Mac but you can't use it on a PC and the same way for PC to Mac. I like the Creative brand MP3 Players. They can switch back and forth between Macs and PC's and you can still use Itunes and everything with them (just like Ipods). Pretty much all the MP3 players are the same now-a-days. Of the early MP3 players, Ipod was certainly the better brand, but now you really get what you pay for. I think the industry leader right now is the ZUNE which can connect to wireless internet as well.

My husband just bought one of the largest Ipods, and admittedly, it's pretty cool. I have absolutely not one iota of the interest in music he does, but it's fantastic...he has like 40 days worth of stuff stored on our i-tunes, and he transferred all that over and all of the pictures on our computer to his I-Pod and he's got tons of space left. He's like a kid in a candy store! I guess it's pretty cool

There is an even smaller version. I have an Ipod Shuffle which is even smaller, about the size of a thumb drive. It clips onto your shirt or shorts and is super light. It has no screen. It holds 2 GB worth of songs which is a lot. The Nano has a new version that holds 8 GB. For the most part, if you're using it for running which I also do, you'll never need 8 GB worth of songs and can switch them out when you want something faster or newer. I use a download site called Podrunner and download their free mixes for running that are categorized by beats per minute. ITunes also sells exercise mixes that you can purchase and download.

I don't know a whole lot about the difference between MP3 and IPod besides the IPod is an Apple product and syncs up with ITunes automatically. I basically download the mix for exercising only as I don't use it any other time. I exercise an hour a day so that's all of the music I need on mine. When I get bored with the mix I have on it, I swap it out. You cannot choose certain songs on the Shuffle..it plays them in order or shuffles them but you can skip past them like you would playing a CD.

The cool thing about mp3/ipods is that you can download audio books from the library system and listen to them. I recently listened to pride and predijuce.

i pod is small, size of a credit card...a little bigger....holds all the music of your choice....which you have to have a program on the computer to get the music.....or you have the cds. that you put the music on in a round about way.....sorry I probably am the wrong one to be explaining. But I will tell you with ipods you can change your music on it...you can be creative with it...I love mine..When I go back to India soon I will get rid of my daughter's music and just add more of my own......mine is the smallest---its a nano..and I think it holds like 1000 songs. Therefore I have all kinds of playlists...one to relax, one to move my groove to housework, etc. The initial cost is a bit of $$$...but then its smooth sailing from then
Hope I have helped in some small way.
