Posted - Aug 02 2009 : 12:38:16 PM Hi Karen -- The button star was given to me by my sister -- she found it in Frankenmuth, Michigan.
But I can kinda describe its construction: there are spokes of heavier wire and to it buttons are attached in pairs, front to back, with a thinner wire. Where needed, the thinner wire is just wrapped around the heavier wire to advance between buttons.
Martha Stewart has a tutorial on doing beaded snowflakes: http://www.marthastewart.com/article/beaded-snowflakes
My button star has a similar construction.
I'm happy to have you follow my blog. It's so nice to hear from readers -- I usually just throw things out there and never know who is reading it. I'll be reading your blog, too. Nice!

Posted - Aug 02 2009 : 09:28:41 AM Katie, I love the little star burst made out of buttons...can you tell me how that was made. What wire item was used to form the star shape. I would love to use some of my vintage buttons to make that. Thanks.

Posted - Jul 31 2009 : 3:11:31 PM Judy -- I can't believe you found the very same book!! Isn't it 'cool'??
Alee -- I may try a recipe . . . but I may just use them in some altered book or collage or something. Love the handwriting and the amber paper. So evocative.
Lori -- I don't always come home with a great find. Lots of times, I leave the thrift empty-handed, because I'm a little bit picky and a little bit of a penny-pincher. But this was a good week.
Melody June -- I may do some collaging and pasting and such on those cigar boxes. Meanwhile they sit in a stack on the floor, just a bit off the cat highway that runs through our livingroom.
More finds today -- I think I may do a 'Thrifty Find Thursday' each week -- it will give me something to blog about when I'm a bit stuck for ideas.
Thanks for looking at my blog. I love visitors.

Posted - Jul 31 2009 : 09:51:00 AM Katie! I have the very same cookbook!!! I got it at an estate sale last weekend - what a coincidence!!! Mine only has one handwritten recipe, written on one of the pages in the back of the book, for "Mrs. Viola Gehnke, Uncooked Cookies." And I love the QE tin. Good job on the thrifting! Judy

Posted - Jul 31 2009 : 09:27:18 AM My mother has buttons in a tin exactly like your Queen Elizabeth tin. I think, she got it when her mother passed(my Mom was only 23 at the time), buttons and all. I remember it very well when I as a child. I used to play with the vintage buttons.
Good finds, Katie! Joyce |

Posted - Jul 31 2009 : 09:12:06 AM Love, love the cookbook pages!! -- I'd found a book about the same printing year as your cookbook -- maybe mid-30's, and it was about what to wear during the World's Fair!! - It was in tom's moms house, and with a big long section, it went on about how women were not to wear sleeveless blouses! -- Something about "showing off" all that skin! -- Can you imagine!!
The cartoon on the page you show is very similar to the one in the book I'm talking about -- maybe it was published by the same company. Wouldn't that be a trip?!!
You got a great find here!!
