Some of you are familiar with the plight of the Crosby Mint Farm in St. Johns, Michigan. For those of you who aren't, a quick synopsis is that the Crosby Mint Farm is the oldest continually operating mint farm in the country; the mint is farmed organically. It is owned by "Peppermint Jim" Crosby and his sister Lynnette. Right now, the bank is forclosing on the farm, and they only have until August 15 - ironically, the first day of the annual Mint Festival - to raise nearly $350,000 to get the farm back. Visit their website, www.getmint.com to read more about their story.
As I type this, people are camped out in front of the bank picketing and taking monetary donations. I have volunteered to help fill bottles and pack and ship out orders. The girls at work all donated $5 each for a dram of mint oil. The community is rallying round Peppermint Jim and his sister. We are the Mint City, and we want to preserve our proud agricultural heritage.
How you can help: please visit www.getmint.com and order a $5 dram of mint oil. Both peppermint and spearmint are available. Even if they can't earn enough to pay the bank off completely, the Crosbys hope to show that bank that the farm is still viable and worthy of refinancing.

Jessie....email me with details will ya? I may be able to volunteer some time to work with you if you need extra hands. Sorry that I can't volunteer my audio engineer hubby but he's already working a rock-n-roll gig that weekend. I will have my 9 year old in tow, however. LMK. T

*UPDATE* Saturday, August 15 - Sunday, August 16, the Crosby Mint Farm will be the location for Mint Jam '09, a last-ditch effort / benefit concert to help raise money to stop the imminent foreclosure of the farm. I'm working at the farm tonight, and I'll get more details then. As of today, I think they are quite sketchy. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Alee -
Yes...and no. Some people have picketed GreenStone Farm Credit Services for calling all their loans at once. They also set up a donation site out there so people could give money and get their dram from their cars as they drove by (GSFCS is on the big thoroughfare through town). Some people are doing exactly what I'm doing - working extra hard to get the word out. But other than that, I've been SHOCKED at the lack of support from the community. Unfortunately, farm foreclosures are nothing new around here, and I'm sure a lot of people are thinking, "Nobody did anything when I lost my farm, so why should I help somebody else?"

Theresa, they don't "officially" sell plants, but I'm sure Peppermint Jim would sell you some from the field if you want them. He's a really pleasant fellow.

Jessie, do they sell plants too? I'd like to get some mint to plant around my house. I'm looking for a variety.

Thanks for the heads up, JessieMae! I just placed my order for 4 drams - and I'm praying for the farm! Hope they are able to keep it!

Hmm, I think I have a recipe around here for some homemade peppermint candies. How special to try to make them myself (maybe for Christmas) and think of helping out that family. I'm so glad you brought this to my attention! Oh, and peppermint icecream. Mmm. I think I need a few of those drams. OH, as a gift with a handwritten recipe card for how to use it....hmmm :) I hope they keep the farm.

We make a difference.

Thanks for brining that up, Jessie! They are doing a great job, and it really is criminal that the mortgage lender was so harsh on them to put them into this tail spin.
