Last night, Doug wanted to take me out on a date to see the new Harry Potter movie. We were going to take Nora to the drop-in daycare place, but found out they close at 7pm on Sunday. So we thought maybe we would just forget the idea.

But then we realized Harry Potter was playing at the Drive in! We had never gone so we decided that would be perfect. Nora could sit in the car with us and we could watch the movie.

It was really great. Nora did get kindof bored and fussy because she couldn't see the screen very well. Next time we will pull the car a little more forward so she can see better. They broadcast the movie over a radio station so you don't have to worry about having to pull a speaker into the car or whatnot. Our car has a really great speaker system so I think I got better sound that I usually do at the movie theater.

We also didn't have to worry about Nora disturbing other people or people with fluffy hair or hats or cell phones. I am a fan of the drive in now! :D

The drive-in we used to go to had the sound-through-the-radio thing, too. We brought an FM radio with us. It was easier to do that than keep the car running for five hours (our theater always showed a double-feature).

We do not have a drive-in around here unfortunately, but the Baptist Church in Oakesdale puts up a screen and offers a free drive-in movie for all of the families in the area on Friday nights in the summer. They give the kids popcorn and bottled water and everyone has a great time. My family and I do not attend church, but I did offer to donate money to this church to help them keep up the good work for the youth in our community.

I heard recently that there was something like 500 drive ins left in the USA two years ago, just a year later that number dropped to 350. We have one near us and it's a treat!

Alee! What fun! I have to admit -- I'm a bit jealous. There haven't been drive -ins around here for ages. Hmm. Maybe I need to see if there's one relatively close, and take Randy on a road trip!!!!!

We have a drive-in about 15 miles from us. A couple bought it two years ago and have put alot of money and effort into fixing it up. We try to go a couple times during the summer. You get to see two movies for five bucks a person. Bring all of your own snacks and they even have a small playground for the kids to play on before the show starts. For a family of six it beats going to the big multiplex and dropping a load of money for two hours of entertainment!!!

Julia- my car has the automatic lights, but if you turn a dial on my car you can keep them off. Maybe yours has that as well? We would listen for about an hour and then run the car for 10 minutes and we didn't have a problem. I wonder if maybe you could use one of those radio players that you can put batteries in? It wouldn't be the best quality sound but then you could leave your car off.

I really hope this theater keeps going. I had lots of fun and am excited to see more on the BIG screen!

Oh gosh this brings back memories. Loved the drive in. Saw so many great movies there in my teens. Once married we'd take the kids too. Such good family times. I sure miss that!

We have to tune into a radio station for the sound. No more speaker hanging on the window. Made me kind of sad. So, you either have to keep your car running, or turn it on just enough to be able to play the radio, and hope your battery holds. I can't keep my car running as it has the automatic lights that come on. Makes for cranky neighbors if they have headlights in their back windows.

We have a drive in about 20 miles north of here. We always try to go at least once or twice each Summer. The kids love it..and we save money by bringing our own snacks. I took my older boys to one all the time when they were little too...and went alot when I was a kid with my family. We always take lawn chairs and sit outside the car!

I love Drive Ins . I wish we had one close by. They are so much fun on warm nights when you can leave the car windows down or sit out in a lawn chair. We used to back the truck in and everyone sat in the bed of the truck with pillows and blankets.

How neat! They closed our drive-in quite a few years ago and we really miss it. There's one but its quite a ways away so we have not tried to go. The drive in days! Weren't they special!

There is a drive-in here in the town I just moved to! My niece and I went and saw UP a couple of weeks ago. I hadn't been since I was a kid. I am looking forward to going again, once they play something worth my time!

Hi Alee:
I remember Drive-In movies. All of the ones I knew are all closed now. Really sad. I enjoyed watching a movie in the fresh night air.

This is the first summer our Drive-In theater didn't open. Something about a water quality issue. My daughters were LIVID! They couldn't understand why a few porta-potties couldn't be brought in for bathrooms and people would just have to bring their own snacks (we do anyway). I sure hope it isn't the end of an era....

It was lots of fun and we took snacks. Really I think once we get the whole Nora-is-bored situation figured out- that might be THE ONLY way to watch movies. We have a HUGE comfortable car- how much better can it be to kick back in a reclining chair and be able to control the volume of the movie? I hate going to theaters that have the volume up so loud you think it will blow your ears out.

Oh how lucky you are Alee!! A drive in movie!! Such fond memories. We used to have 2 drive ins. One played first run features and charged by the person. The other one ran B or second run (I think that is what they call them). They charged $1 per car load. Want to know how many teen agers you can get into one car?? I don't know either, we never stopped long enough to count them.

Way back when Ole Ron and I got married, we eloped and our best friends, another married couple went with us. That night we all went to the drive in. None of us had much money so my girlfriend and I got in the trunk. Ole Ron and our friend paid their way in to the drive in and parked on the back row. Then My girlfriend got out of the trunk and got in the car.

Our kids grew up at the drive in. When they were babies, we would put them (all 3) in the back seat. We had this board that hooked over the back of the front seats and it made the back seat and floor all one level. We would make their bed with blankets and off we would go. Lots of times we would take picnic food and eat supper at the drive in. Later as the kids got older they would sit outside the car on a blanket.

aww sweet memories.

I used to love the Drive-In when I was a kid. My Mom would make popcorn and other snacks, all of us would pile into the back of our station wagon and off we would go! Such sweet memories!

It's been quite a few years since the Drive-In closed in our area. I really miss it and would love to give my kiddos the same experience.

So glad you have one of the few left to enjoy, Alee!

When my husband and I lived in Cleveland, we went to the double-feature at the drive-in nearly every single weekend! We loved it, and I truly, truly miss it now that we've moved away. It's a shame there aren't more around. I think there's only like 500 drive-ins left in the country - according to the PSA at the beginning of every drive-in movie we went to.
