Ok, so it's that time of year when the Kildeer hatch their brood...and with 5 acres of dirt, vegitation & young fruit trees the Kildeer seem to like our land.
But rather then charge them rent I like to torment the parents!
Parent Kildeer are very protective of their babies and if a 'preditor' comes near their brood one of the parents will fly in the path of the preditor,(me) make a funny sound to get your(me again!) attention and then flap it's wings & flutter around on the ground as if it were wonded, to draw you (me)away from their babies... So being the stinker that I am, I will talk to the parent birdie( all the while hoping my neighbors don't think I am nuts) and then walk in the opposite direction of the parent bird putting on the "wounded show"....which drives them nuts and they continue to fly around me, to get my attention & to lure me away from the babies which by the way are fun to watch,,,,they run across the drive way, their little chubbie bodies & long skinny legs,,,hey wait, I think I just discribed my figure! LOL!
Anyhow, I have fun with them but after I have fun I toss a handful of birdie seed for them....
Well, it's almost 7 AM and I have been up for an hour and have not gotten anything done 'cept sit out here on the balcony, coffee in one hand & laptop in other. Oh & 3 kitties with their noses pressed up against the window-Birdie Watching...

Lucky you I have a skunk parading around my home showing off her two little babies...My neice and her family are comming up here for a week and her two sons love to play in the woods in my back yard. PU I hope the kids don't scare her.

Thanks so much, Gracie and your husband, Gary for your help working on my Trailer Trash. I am so thrilled to see new 'curves' on her body! Ha! lol She was pretty broken down, a sagging mess of an old bag lady! Just like her owner...lol

oh for sure!
while hubby & i sat on the balcony this evening, I had the H2O sprinklers going and it was such fun to watch the Robins playing in the water....too cute!
Lots of critters not to mention the bugs! lol!
Got to plant some more lavender tomorrow,,,,fun fun fun!

Dwarf rabbits? Holy moly! Makes me think of some local PBS show...I wonder if what you have are some sort of subspecies on the at-risk list? Small, old timers talk about them, disappearing...bears looking into. Something at the edge of memory is waving a little flag at me.
It is so fun to have light again, isn't it Grace? Are the wonders of the fabulously long summer days making up for the harsh winter we had? I'm so glad you have so many natural critters to watch. So interesting!

yep, we have lots of Quail,,,of which I suspect are slightly suicidal...why you ask? cuz the dawgone things wait on the side of the road till I am just a few feet from them & then the silly birds dart out in front of me,,,,maybe they are playing "Chicken"!!! lol!
Oh & Michelle, yep, we have the cutest little dwarf rabbits,,,not sure what the story is on them but some of the old timers here say that there use to be lots of dwarf rabbits, but are becoming less & less...probablly due to the really harsh Winters & Coyotes on the prowl for food....cycle of life I guess.
We also have Morning Dove,,,thanx to the seeds that the little birds kick out of the bird feeders I have set out. My little "peek-a-boo" kitty likes to window sit in the window downstairs and watch the Dove who are totally oblivious to her window sitting & watching. Wonder who is teasing who!

I don't have Killdeer out my way, but, I have tons of quail, they too are not much on nests, but wonderful parents. When the chicks are out of the nest, you will see them following mom in single file, it looks like little puff balls floating cause you can't see their legs and feet in the grass. They will die to protect their young, faking broken wing, dragging it and running to draw away the predator.

Sounds great Grace! I've been watching a pair of blue herons at our place trying to get their ever-growing chick to fledge. What a racket! Not nearly so cute as your killdeer. :) DH calls them killdee, leaving off the r for some reason. I need a translator! :) Calls our heron "shypokes" too. Keeps me in stitches. Didn't think there would be such a regional dialect difference right here in Washington, but some of these long-timers have such interesting terms. So many things in life to enjoy and smile about. Got any other baby critters you're harrassing out there? 5 acres, must be someone else too.... How's your garden? Rabbits?

yep, not very good nesters but great parents. The babies are just too cute as they run across our driveway w/mom & dad in tow.

The nest out in our horses pasture. Fun to watch and the babies are such cute fluffs. I wonder how come the horses never step on them. They make no nest--just plop them eggs our right in a rocky area. MB

Got to run into town & p/u 130 more pavers for under the balcony....& a few more goodies that I probablly don't need! lol!

Katmom, you remind me of my Grandmother...she was a crazy animal lover, but for some reason, she loved to pester chickens and ducks at the fair! We always had to watch her because she'd walk around their cages, poking her fingers in the cage, taunting them, trying to get them to snap at her and then she'd giggle mischieviously and say, "that little stinker tried to bite me!" She was something else!
I'd love to see those little birds wiggle, though :) We don't have them in this area...further out, but I've never seen one up close. Cool!

Grace, I have a family out in my garden that I have had to til around and be careful not to disturb them. I talk to them and they are used to me now. But the other day I checked on the nest and there were only 3 eggs and one of them had flies all over it. It looked like it was trying to hatch. The parents were right near it. So this morning there are no eggs and no sign of birds. I did hear them up in the sky, though. I did not see any babies. They could be hiding. I hope they are all right. It's been fun watching them out there. My granddaughter Kansas, calls them kill birds.

I love killdeers! Last year one laid her little egg right at the very edge of my driveway- I mean the VERY edge! I drive a suburban! Do you know how hard it was to get up my very narrow driveway in that big vehicle witout crushing her tiny egg?! Whew!
