I just can't. I know there are laws for a reason and I do try as hard as I can to obey them. But this one is just plain STUPID! I just got a call from the Ga. Dept. of Agriculture. If I want to sell eggs at the farmer's market I will have to go to Gainesville, Ga. which is 3 1/2 hours away from here, and take a candling class. Otherwise I cannot sell my eggs anywhere. Well, I guess you can just call me a rebel cuz I ain't gonna do it! And I will NOT register my animals either. I don't know if I will even go to the farmer's market. It's just getting way to legalistic with all this "you can't do this and you can't do that" crap. I am just not that type person. Sorry. I guess I'm just a littled p******d off right now and just have to get this off my chest. I am not liking all the craziness in this world right now. What is wrong with just plain ole farm fresh eggs right out from under the chicken??? Good grief, now we have to go have them all tested and cleaned and germ free before we can even crack the darn things open. What next?????
I hope I don't offend anyone here and that's ok if you do all this but I just can't do it. It's just rediculous.

About these baked goods...what about bake sales to raise money for a charity or school function? Will that require a permit also?

Beth, I love horses. I used to own five horses at one time but not anymore. My daughter lives in clearlake. Maybe we could have tea or coffee sometime.

Lauri, Hi, I am in Clear Lake and stable my horses in Alvin. Sounds like we may be close. I am with all of you. The law makers are getting way to carried away. When you are all ready to put your feet down count me in.

I did make a mistake when I said that I can't sell my eggs from my home. I can. Just not at the market. I have so few eggs it wouldn't be worth going through all that. The other people that are going have hundreds of chickens. He said they wouldn't candle every single egg. I have not had a bad egg yet out of all mine. Even the eggs I found that were out for days were all good. I just crack each one open in a separate bowl if I think there might be a bad one. Ya just have to use some common sense sometimes, right?
And yesterday at the market someone asked me if I was making any feta cheese and I had to tell them to please not mention that there. The girl that runs the market was there with her mom and another lady that work in the agriculture dept. across the street and they all had gotten some from me last year. I said I will not talk about that there since it is so illegal to even mention raw milk anything. I would like to check into what all is involved in getting certified to sell raw milk for pet consumption only. If it's resonable, I might do that. I'll see.
I'm so sorry ya'll can't sell baked goods. The lady that sells at our market has a bakery now so she has the certified kitchen she's supposed to have to ba able to sell there. She had to go to court and it was a big ole mess.
Lynn and Tracy, I agree with you both. It is crazy and I ain't sayin' nuthin'!

It's so crazy! With our frontier day we can sell baked goods etc. but it's not worth the trouble. cause you have to give the people running the frontier day $35, then you have to get a vendors lisence for Xamount then pay taxes. Blahhhhhhhhh. What ever happened to the good ole days? We are sooooo lucky we do'nt have to do all this stuff--- selling our pecans.

Tracy, High 5 to you....And Kristin...High 5 to you too...I agree to what all you ladies are saying. My neighbor sells her from her porch. And she has a LARGE garden this yr. We have a nice one..just for my husband and I...I can stand what the govt is trying to do to control us. And Mansanto needs to have someone look at them REALLY hard to see what the are doing with GMF or GIF....And what they put into the water as well....we need to say ENOUGH...or there will be huge up roar..

I feel for you. I just checked a few days ago to see if I could sell baked goods at our Farmer's Market...No can do. Well, I could but I have to go through all the red tape and it's absolutely ridiculous for someone like me - it wouldn't be worth it. Not to mention, I have to give a $25 application fee to the Market, THEN give a $70 membership fee for a year, THEN pay $30 every saturday that I wanted to be at the farmer's market and sell the darned baked goods. What's the $70 for?? But that's not all!
I wish we could sell baked goods on here but I am sure it's expensive and everything would go bad by the time it got to anyone. LOL!

You know, Okra plants look like BEAUTIFUL tropical plants! Cucumbers can be grown on a trellis like MANY vining flowers..... oh such lovely PLANTS with BEAUTIFUL flowers! And do those idiots even REALIZE that many FLOWERING plants are edible too? Probably not. Come to MY house and this is what they'll get-- "Oh, no sir, that's not a TOMATO plant! That thing on there is a REALLY BIG Rose hip off a VERY OLD variety of Rose!"
Since they think Candling will determine a good egg from a bad (all it does is lets you see if there's anything GROWING inside it), they probably WOULDN'T know a Tomato plant from a ROSE bush! Especially when tomatoes come in SO MANY COLORS besides RED!!!! (I am particularly fond of the Purple (Black) tomatoes... mmmm.....)
Just plain stupid is what it all is, but, like I've been saying-- "Control the FOOD, Control the PEOPLE." But we Americans are MUCH smarter than that, especially us Farmgirls. And, once we all stand up, and stand FIRM against all this garbage, the so called "law makers" usually back off. At least the ones with two brain cells to rub together do. The OTHERS get voted out of office!!!!! This country IS still a Democracy despite what "Big Brother" is TRYING to turn it into. And as for Mansanto? It is the "Goliath" of the modern world. I hate all this bureaucracy. Leave me the heck alone. I don't have hens, but if i did, I'd not register them. As to the idea of taxing my homegrown veggies - good f-ing luck. They have to figure out how much I grow first. |

The animal registration is called NAIS (National Animal Identification System?) and yes it does cost money to do this because you have to buy all the tags and anything that goes with it. And guess who is the biggest supplier?? Monsanto, of course. They are the ones who started this whole mess. Right now in some states it's mandatory but in others they say it's still voluntary, but a good idea to do it. NOT! I think also that if you show animals at state fairs they have to be registered. Or to even take your horse to the park to ride.
And ya'll are right. It all comes down to big bucks for someone. I haven't seen any of it. Hmmm.

I think that this is a way to get money from the hobby farm. I heard that a law has been passed that when you pay your income tax next year they are going to tax the vegetables that you grow at home. The excuse is that they are not FDA approved. I think it is all about money if you could track it back. Do you have to pay to register your animals. If so, that is where they are getting the money. Just what I think, but if I had animals I would not register them. It is time for us to stand up. Just my opinion.

I bet dollars to donuts that the bureaucrat that wrote that law doesn't even know what candling is or what it is for and that is why it is confusing because it isn't being used in the right context. I agree tho, don't register your animals.

Dawn, anyone who sells eggs even from home has to be certified now. I asked. Do you sell your eggs, too?
Amen, Jessie! I am sure that is exactly why this is happening. Crazy. I love your little story and it is so true. They also did that at our FM with the baked goods. This one poor lady appealed it and I think she won. She was there a few weeks ago with her baked goods. I think she did have to get stainless steel appliances, though. I'll have to find out more about that.

I wonder if they're afraid of a lawsuit, you know, from crazy people who sue McDonald's because they find a deep-fried chicken head in their McNuggets?
Suburban mom buys a dozen eggs at a farmers' market and takes 'em home to make some la-de-da frittata. Ooops! As she cracks them into a bowl, oops! A baby chicken lands in the bowl among the yolks and whites. Next thing you know, you, the farmers' market, the city that allowed it, the county that the city is in, and the state that didn't regulate it get sued for 100 trillion dollars to help the poor woman pay for the therapy she will need to cope with the trauma, replace her forever-tainted bowls and pans, plus 99% in other damages....
Frankly, I think finding a deep fried chicken head or a baby bird in your food might not be such a bad thing for some people. Maybe then they'd remember where their food comes from and be thankful for the animals that are part of the food chain!
Our farmers' market stopped allowing baked goods that aren't made in a certified commerical kitchen last year. No one 'round here has one, so no more baked goods for sale.

Yes, I do believe Ga. is the largest producer of chickens and eggs. And I have 7 hens. I asked the guy how long this has been a law and he said for years now. Well, they didn't say a thing last year when I sold eggs at the FM.
That sounds like a good idea, Debbie. But ya know what? I bet all those people in Wash. couldn't tell a rooster from a hen anyway! Let alone a fertilized egg.
And I wish my hen house looked like your very clean house, Karen. I try to at least rake up all the old straw and poop for the garden once a month and keep clean straw in the boxes. But I think my chickens like bugs.

If I were you, I'd just get rid of your rooster (s) then there is absolutely no way you'd have to candle eggs. Can't be fertile if ya ain't go no rooster! Let them try to convince you otherwise...eh?
Government is trying so hard to regulate everything and they are making a complete mess of it all!

Yep. it is crazy! I know the laws are created for those who have large operations not the small farmers, but really, they are a bit much.
I clean out the hen house every day, rake out the pen once a week and shovel out the straw and lay new down once every three months. With the hen house wallpapered and painted, keeping it clean is a breeze- I can wash the whole thing down in about twenty minutes! So, who has healthier hens, cleaner eggs and more sanitary conditions? And we get glommed in with those who can't possibly do that due to the enormity of their operations.
It isn't fair, but I am afraid it is what it is. I don't get the candleing thing either. If you could see a germ with a candle, don't you think the early settlers would have been healthier? ;)
