Hey ladies how are all of you today? Pretty day here in MN, but very chilly, it was only 2 degrees here last night. I was just reading my MJ book last night and I love her story about the "curler years" on page 224 and I was wondering if any of you ladies still worn curlers every night? I would love to learn to curl my hair. Do any of you use rag curlers and if so how did you make them? Like how long and wide did you make them and what you made them out of. I have really long farmgirl hair so I would probably need a lot of them. I plan on making a beauty parlor apron soon for me and my fiance because I cut his hair. It just sounds like something kind of fun. Do any of you have fun stories about getting all dolled up for you dates? We have date night every Friday night and I thought curling my hair would be kind of a fun surprise. Rose

Well ladies I tried the rag curlers in my hair today. When I woke up this morning I looked like I had a bad perm job but by noon it was looking better and by the evening when my honey came home they were perfect. The curl lasted longer in my hair too. My hair is so heavy it can't hold curls too long. I would have posted a picture of me in my curlers but I didn't look as cute as Jenny's girls. The thought of that picture being on the net forever scares me and other people too I am sure. Thanks for the tips and stories.

By the time we've made it...we've had it.

Catherine, Your comments about your husband's facial hair reminded me of the one time mine lost his...we had a similar pact that he would never shave his beard as I had never known him any other way. He's an actor though, and the day came when he got the part of Daddy Warbucks in the local theatre production of "Annie". He opted to shave rather than wear one of those skull caps. So I accompanied him to the salon where he had beard, moustache AND head (beautiful dark curls) shaved!!!! We took progress photos and at the end I (only half jokingly) brought out a paperbag with eyeholes cut out for him to wear. The entire salon was involved by then. I couldn't look at him for three days - it was so painful! By the end of the play (2 or 3 weeks) however, I thought he looked very sexy in his new look and invited him to keep it, but he thought shaving every day was a pain so he grew everything back. Its been there ever since.

I cut my hubby's hair too. #4 on the back and sides, and about an inch long on the top - he has curly hair on top so it really is hard to mess up. :) I'm not always perfect, but I do better than some of the barber's he's been to over the years. ;)

I'm still growing my hair out. It's in a sort of bob now - it was VERY SHORT for a couple of years. Now I can't wait to have my ponytail back. My hair is sort of wavy, tho I've always wanted straight. Oh well!

Oh Jenny! The picture of your girls remind me of the days that my girls wore rags in their hair. So cute!

I am indeed fortunate when it comes to hair. I have long, thick, curly brownish-redish hair, not really auburn, but close. When I was little it was more red. Funny thing is even though my hair is and always has been curly my momma would still put it up on Saturday night after a bath in those pink curlers. I guess it was a way to control it. My kindergarten photo is too cute with ringlets on my head!

Today we have gels, spritzes, etc. for taming curly/frizzy hair. So that's all I need to do, just spray it with the cheapest gel I can find and it is good to go! I feel so blessed.

All four of my children got straight hair, thick, but fairly straight.

Sleeping with SOUP CANS?!?!?! That's dedication ! - I'll bet the curls were beautiful, however...

Haha-- I think my fiance is the only man on the planet who loves short hair! I had REALLY short hair when we met, and now I'm growing it out for the wedding. But he's asked that my wedding present to him be that I cut it off again the day after the wedding! HAHA. As for curlers, my grandma was a "beauty operator" and my mom used to SLEEP with SOUP CANS in her hair to get big billowy curls.

My grandma now has skin cancer in her hands from years with those harsh chemicals, so she can't cut our hair, but when I was growing up she cut everyone's hair. My parents, aunts and uncles, brothers and cousins. Every trip to grandma's meant a haircut. I used to love playing around in her converted garage beauty shop.

Hey,girls! I cut my husband's hair too. Now that there's so little of it we just "buzz" it. I think I'll have to make a beauty parolor apron too...maybe in some "manly" fabric. Rose, I had a friend who, after shaving his beard over Christmas break, was asked by a student if he shaved to make sure he still had ALL of his chins!!! Jenny, loved the picture. Amanda got a kick out of seeing her "pals" in rag curlers like in the Little House books! As for me, my hair is shoulder-length,straight and greying. Doesn't really hold a curl for long, so I don't even try. Catherine, I think the fashion police would send me for a re-do too. I just go with what works for me and my lifestyle!

Hey cajungal, that's real funny about your husband, my fiancé is the same way about his goatee. He won't shave it off because he thinks it will make him look fat! You can tell what season it is by looking at my father’s facial hair. Beard-winter, clean face-spring, mustache-summer, goatee-fall. I cut my fiancés hair this weekend and I was looking at him this morning thinking he looked like he had a fight with the weed whacker, but when he asked how he look I told him he look handsome. I am going to put my hair in rag curlers this Friday, I tried those large rollers and I kept thinking how did they sleep with these on, I couldn't stand wearing them over night.

Oh, Jenny - your girls are so cute! How lucky they are to have a mama like you. My mom used rag curlers in my hair growing up on the days that it wasn't braided in two braids with a part down the middle. Lately, however, when I get the itch to curl, I use those pink sponge curlers (I have a milk carton of them that dates back to the late seventies or early eighties ). I, also, want to try the cloth curlers again - I might end up with something a little wilder than I am anticipating, however - I just cut my hair into a very short "bob" haircut.

Hi Rose....nice to meet ya'. How fun to go on a date every Friday. Y'all sound like a fun couple. I cut my hubby's hair, too. It's so simple though. He has really tight curly hair and I just shave his whole head with a No.3 guard and do the sides and neck with a No. 2. It's fun....I feel like I have such power and control when he's in my "beauty seat".

Getting dolled up usually means taking out my ponytail and wearing my hair down. Here's a cute story about us....Before we married we joked that grounds for divorce would be me cutting my hair short and him shaving his beard and moustache. Well, a job made him get rid of the facial hair years ago and I decided to keep him anyway....I had never seen his naked face!! He's had a moustache and goattee (sp?) for about the last 9 years and I'm so happy. I've always kept my end of the bargain. I'm probably one of those women the fashion police would say needs an updated hairdo. But no doin'!

Jenny, your girls are adorable. Love the rag curlers. You're a handy gal to have around....you always have good ideas.

Blessings
Catherine

Aunt Jenny thanks for posting that really cute picture of your girls, too cute! I think I have a good idea how to do it now. I actually have a flowbee (remember those?) but my fiance won't let me touch him with it, funny. My aunt has 3 boys so I think I will give it to her. I am from Akeley, but I will post all about that soon in the welcoming page. Rose

I have long sort of wavy hair so I never curl it...except my bangs with a giant curling iron if they are really too long and I need them out of my eyes a little...BUT..I curl my girl's hair on rag rollers all the time...I will add a picture to this of them..they love it. It works best with wet hair, but works with dry too. I tear strips of fabric aout two inches wide and a foot long (we like to tie bows) and tie the bottom just once...at the end of the lock I want to curl and roll it up to her head..it is really fun and they don't mind sleeping on them.
When I was in high school in the 70s (graduated in 76) we liked our hair either long straight and no bangs...so I was ironing my hair straight then...or layered with "wings" and i had to wear alot of hairspray to get my hair to do that one too. I look best with my hair NOT layered, and I keep it long now,but with bangs and pull back the sides most of the time.
I have made a couple of the beauty parlor aprons and love them. I cut my boy's hair and youngest daughter's bangs...how fun for you to curl your hair for a date. I wish my honey and I had a date every week..we are lucky to get once a month!!
What part of Minnesota do you live, Rose? I love the state alot.. I lived there years ago..up sort of between Grand Rapids and Bemidji on Sand Lake. Such a pretty place and the people were great.
