In reading some posts on the honeymoon thread, I noted that many of you or your spouses had never been out of your state or out of the country, or even out of town.
I have this wanderlust thing, and it makes me somewhat panicky (at times) to think of all the places on this earth that I will never see. I mean, it's just sooooo overwhelming. There are things in the next county over that I don't even know exist and THAT bothers me, too....
Weird? It's not that I'm dissatisfied with my existence, I've just always been ravenous for other cultures and places. Should have worked on that archeology degree I guess, instead of ballet!

Years ago when my DH and I were younger we planned on doing lots of traveling when we retired. Cross country in a motor home,campsites.Well at age 49 (2000)my husband developed vascular necrosis in both hip joints. All of this happened within 6 months. He was fine 6 months later he could not walk. Pain beyond what humans are not equipped to handle. There were no drugs that could take the pain away. 2 hip replacements then replacing a replacement, bedridden for 2 years then another year and another surgery. Anyway...more surgery and our idea of traveling was over. Plane rides were out,blood clots,riding in a car for long distances is misery. So we moved to the coast(75miles) which is where we spent our weekends and summers before hip problems. Retired and moved to the beach. There is a lot he can't do but we are here and love it. Now we get to worry about what the economy has done to our retirement. Never thought in a million years that this could happen to us. I'm telling you that good grief,crap you never thought would come your way after years of planning, can sneak up on you. This past year the economy,the market and everything it involves has whipped our butt. Our homeowners insurance is going up 29% and Jeez well at least I am healthy. Whew. We will get thru this. Things always level off and it will be ok. Till then I will have a vodka tonic! Yikes. Oh we were talking about traveling................

I used to travel a lot when I was young. I took a boat to England twice, it was an Italian student ship, what an adventure that was. I travelled a lot in England, Denmark, that's where I have relatives. One sumer my parents sent me to this summer school program in Italy, I never went to class, but I had a lovely time travelling around Italy for a couple months. I went to Greece once, that was nice but very weird for a young woman traveling alone.I also did many cross country trips in my early twenties, I always took the side roads, much more interesting than the highway, even back them. Gas was 33 cents a gallon! I would love to do it again but I'm too old and too cheap and probably too crippled up to attempt it. It is amazing to see all the wonders of nature out there, and the weird things too. When my kids were little we would go to Prince Edward Island for a week or two for about six years. We rented a friend's cottage and I can safely say, P.E.I. is one of the most beautiful, friendly spots in the universe, and you can swim in the Atlantic because of the gulf stream. Here, you put your foot in the water and it has turned blue before you have a chance to scream in pain.

I love to travel and I love to come home! I've been to 39 states and 9 countries so far. We are taking a travel break until our 5.5 year old son is older.
Here in IL there is tons to see and do. The states that border us have lots to see as well and make for great day or weekend trips. Even on a budget you can find tons of things to discover around you. Act like a tourist and research your area. You'll be surprised how much you didn't know about it!

Jonni- I love the idea of traveling and I have always enjoyed it when I have gone. Coming home is a wonderful feeling, and going to new places always gives the most fantastic day dreams! I have this dream of going to Peru, Ireland, England, Scotland, Egypt- oh wait! How about the whole world!
But at the same time I am content to stay here. I suppose if I had all the money in th world I would travel quite extensively!

I think you're like my husband, Kristin...he's afraid of flying as well. Well, he's afraid of heights and it's somewhat limiting. We were going to go to Newfoundland a couple of years ago, and I started looking into flights and he said, "um, nooo. We're driving there." Kentucky to Newfoundland? We'd get there only to turn right back around again!!!
I hope that I get over the wanderlust, but I haven't yet, or at least be satisfied by books and travel shows about these places..sometimes that makes it worse, though!!!

Jonni, I would love to go to Ireland. I have an opportunity to go to Italy with the lady I look after. I could go to the Virgin Islands, too, with her. Her other DD lives there and they keep trying to get me to come stay awhile there with her. But I hate to fly. I am really quite terrified. I did fly back in Oct. for the first time since I was 18. I drove to Col. and went with my sister to Denver and flew to Portland then back again. The flight there was horrifying but on the way back I was fine.
ANyway, I would like to go to these places but if I never do it's ok. I love where I live and think it's the most beautiful place on this earth. So I'm fine with staying here. When I do go other place I am ready to get home as soon as I get there. I guess I'm just a home body type.

I can understand your point of view, Audrey. My mom is the same way--and Justin's grandparents, who used to be the most active folks I knew prior to being ill, had no desire to do anything outside of Cincinnati or Florida.
Even when I travel, I've never done the "tour" thing...I always stayed in hostels and did my own thing (eurorail pass, rent a car--and learn to drive by that country's standards!) and I time it so the place I'm staying is central to so many things that I want to do and see....I always feel satisfied with my "agenda". In one person's lifetime, you'd never, ever see all there is to see? Aghh...I'm psyching myself out again.
Everyone said that when I had a child I wouldn't or couldn't go anywhere any longer, but that simply isn't true...now I just want HER to see it all, too!

I love to travel, but I hate being rushed around from one hotel to another. And I hate flying, so it takes me most of a week's vacation just to get there!
I'd love to spend my winters in the southwest and my summers in Maine or Canada. And of course, there are about 10 different countries I'd love to spend a year in, even though that would mean getting on a plane.

I was just talking to a co-worker about this the other day. I however, am just the opposite. I have little to no desire to go to another country. The only one that intrigues me is England/Scotland/Ireland. Maybe Australia but no way will I do that plane trip. My Dad however has the "wanderlust". He's been to several foreign countries and still wants more. I think you either have it or not. Since you seem to be afflicted I wish you lots of travel!
