COFFEE FILTERS... Who Knew?
Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave. Coffee filters make excellent covers.
Clean windows and mirrors. Coffee filters are lint-free so they'll leave windows sparkling.
Protect China. Separate your good dishes by putting a coffee filter between each dish.
Filter broken cork from wine. If you break the cork when opening a wine bottle, pour the wine through a coffee filter.
Protect a cast-iron skillet. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.
To apply shoe polish, ball up a lint-free coffee filter.
Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a coffee filter.
Weigh chopped foods. Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a kitchen scale.
Hold tacos. Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods.
Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot. Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to prevent the soil from going through the drainage holes.
Prevent a Popsicle from dripping. Poke one or two holes as needed in a coffee filter.
Using expensive strips to wax eyebrows? Try strips of coffee filters.
Put a few in a plate and put your fried bacon, French fries, chicken fingers, etc... on them. Soaks out all the grease.
Keep in the bathroom. They make great 'razor nick' fixers.
OH YEAH... THEY'RE ALSO GREAT TO USE IN YOUR COFFEE MAKERS!!

I used a coffee filter as a pattern and made a reusable coffee filter out of a piece of organic cotton. When you dump your grounds in your compost bucket, rinse it off and let it dry flat. It gets stiff and is easily put back into your coffeemaker......

Hi Farmgirl sisters,
The list of good uses for coffee filters never said to use the white ones...and I didn't intend to have it become what it has become.
I believe toxins or ingredients in the coffee filters should be posted in a seperate topic.

It is my understanding that any wood or plastic that has been "bleached" has traces of Dioxins in it. Especially plastics. I just googled dioxins in tampons and got this off the FDA site. Again it is considered safe amounts. . .But do you trust them?
"When questions about dioxin arose a number of years ago, FDA asked tampon manufacturers to provide information about their pulp purification processes and the potential for dioxin contamination. Manufacturers of rayon tampons are also asked to routinely monitor dioxin levels in the raw material used or the finished tampons. Manufacturers have provided FDA with test results of studies conducted at independent laboratories, using the most sensitive test methods available. Dioxin monitoring is a highly technical assay performed at only a few independent expert laboratories in the U.S. The detectable limit of this assay is currently approximately 0.1 to 1 parts per trillion of dioxin.
Using these tests, dioxin levels in the rayon raw materials for tampons are reported to be at or below the detectable limit of the state-of-the-art dioxin assay, i.e., approximately 0.1 to 1 parts per trillion. FDA's risk assessment indicates that this exposure is many times less than normally present in the body from other environmental sources, so small that any risk of adverse health effects is considered negligible. A part per trillion is about the same as one teaspoon in a lake fifteen feet deep and a mile square."
I just assume play it safe and use UNbleached products.

I first heard about the dioxins in the white coffee filters when I lived in New York State and worked at a nature center back in early 1989. My now ex-husband and I always bought brown filters for our coffee maker and eventually bought one of those gold, reusable cones. My mom always buys brown filters for her machine.
It is kind of amazing they do keep the white ones on the market.
I didn't know about the tampons, though. Sigh...

Wow..who knew?! This is a lovely topic to be reading as I sit here and sip my coffee, made with a white fliter! yikes I'm about out so was planning on buying some new ones, guess I'll get the brown ones now.

My coffee maker also has a re-usable filter but I am glad to know about the white ones.

Nancy- No my husband isn't much of a coffee drinker and while I will drink it if it is around- I'd don't have to have it. So no coffee maker!

You can get unbleached Tampons and Diapers at the health food store or order it online and have it delivered to your house.

oops!
Looks like we'll be making the swich to also start composting. Gads! We compost everyting else, why not these too.
Will be shopping at Costco this week sometime. Might see if they carry the 900 count in the unbleached. Sams amd Wally world just make me mad.
But sorry, I'll have to take risks w/ the tampoons. (have used Tampax for over 20+years and I know what works and suits my needs) I don't have time to fuss w/ the mess at work (too many guys in one place = no privacy at all!) |

I don't use tampons, but I guess I didn't even realize the white filters had to be bleached to be white! I can't drink chlorinated water, so I know what that stuff can do to you. Thanks for the info, Heide!

I believe it is the BLEACH/Chlorine in 'em that you ingest. . .
A little side note:
it is the same for tampons. It is very dangerous to use the bleached cotton inside your body.
Research it; all the evidence is scary!

I never heard about the white ones being toxic!!!! I recently bought a coffee maker with a reusable coffee filter basket. So, I don't have to worry about that at home anymore. But we still use the white ones at work! So, what's the story on the white ones?
