Ok, according to the "1001 Household Hints and Work Savers" booklet published in 1948,,,on page 57, tip number 515 it says:
Dirty Clothespins leave their dirty mark on linens and garments. Bathe them back to spotlessness in a pan of soapy warm water. Scrub each pin with a stiff brush, rinse in ammonia water, then spread out on clean paper and dry them in the sun.
Well fiddles, I can hardly wait for the next warm sunny day so I can get my clothes pins out and wash & scrub them....hows about ya'all !?!

Gracie!! You crack me up!! I need to soak mine..I ought to but I SINCERELY doubt I'm going to!! If I notice any crud on them I tend to wipe them on my apron!

By the way..thank you so much for the secret message you left on my planter. Adorable!! I sure hope you had a wonderful birthday. I finally finished my memory quilt...added a backing and some ribbon hangers. I'm pretty darn pleased with it. Sure wish I could come to the rug making class.. I'm sticking close to home these days!!

Sending cheer! ~julia

Well, I've never "scrubbed" my clothespins but after sitting around all winter or once they fell on the ground (we had free range chickens), I soaked them in bleach water and rinsed in clear water before using again. I think I got that habit from my mom. I can't imagine scrubbing each one; I did swish them around in the soapy bleach water though.
