Remember when we were kids and made construction paper baskets and filled them with flowers and left them on a neighbors door or a teachers desk? Even my kids used to make them up and get on their ponies and deliver them far and wide. It was so much fun.

I don't remember any of this here. I DO remember mom telling me about how they celebrated May 1 when she was a kid though. She and her brothers were left out of school early and assembled on a big square in her home town. They marched around that square singing songs about May 1. Then they went to a big tent somewhere in town. They listened, played and at the end received fruit and candy. Remember mom was born in 1925, so when she was about 8 it was 1933 and in the middle of the pre WWII years.
Candy and fruit were not abundant then and they were happy to get some and take home. The afternoon they always off from school and they went with my granddaddy to some sort of May 1 festival for laborers.
Nowadays there a plenty of music festivals everywhere.
Except this year. All May 1 celebrations had been canceled due to what happened on April 30. :(

We ended up spending all day running errands- Maybe tomorrow we will get a chance to make some belated May Day baskets.
Anyone have a town that does a Maypole?

yeah i have to say i feel a little left out. i wish we would have done things like this when i was a kid. deffently something i want to start with my own kids, when i have them one day.

I just finished hanging May flower baskets. So people have door handles that you can't hang anything on. It was a lot of fun to do and everyone I gave them to except Lola heard about May day. It's grey and drizzley and a little chilly today, so I'm sure everyone loved them.

I love May baskets too! we had such fun running around and placing them on door handles and then knocking and hiding in the bushes trying not to giggle...too much ...life was innocent and free then =) lets all revive the custom! What a lovely thing. And little ones look so cute toting around May baskets, for friends and neighbours =)

I have done May baskets with my daughters for over 22 years. This year my daughter, Natalie who is 12 years old made baskets for her teachers and for the little ones she babysit for. So tonight will be very busy delivering baskets! I love it as much as she does.
I have a great pattern for May baskets- if any one wants a pattern I would be happy to send one to them. Happy May Day!!

That is so neat. MayDay was never really a big thing when I was growing up, I think I missed out on the fun. This is an adorable idea and the kids would love doing it!!

i must be from a different planet.....i never heard of putting baskets of flowers on neighbors doors as a surprise. the only thing i ever heard about was the may pole dance and even that wasn't big up in jersey where i grew up. gosh, i feel like i really missed out! |

I loved making may baskets. I would hang it on our front door, ring the bell, and hide. As if my mom did not know who it was!

I still do May baskets. When all my girls were at home, we would pick whatever was in bloom, make bouquets and sneek up to the neighbors door, hang the basket, knock and run! My youngest, 17, will be doing it tomorrow as well.
The grade school I attended always stopped classes in the afternoon, so that we could all make construction paper baskets. We would carry them on the bus carefully,so as to not tear them, then we would pick flowers and go back and forth between our house and our grandparents house, till both houses looked like funeral parlors.
The high school I graduated from, made a big deal out of May Day. They had a May Day court, they always wore hooped dresses. We would have an assembly with the freshman girls dancing around the May pole. It was beautiful. I hardly ever find anyone of my generation and younger who ever did May baskets, kind of sad, it needs to be revived.
For tomorrow and its needs I do not pray, but keep me, guide me, love me, Lord just for today.

Oh I love doing May Day baskets! I think Nora is old enough this year to have fun with it! We might go get some "permanent" flowers since we don't have a flower garden yet and make little arrangments for our neighbors on the street. I think it will be fun to drop them off at the doorstep. Nora should get a kick out of that!
