My great uncles ran a general store in Lampeter, Pennsylvania where I was presented with this all new wonderful invention from Unlce Eli. It was white with pink stripes and just about the niftiest thing around. I doubt if I could keepit going today, without some practice.
Remember your first experience with this exotic invention?

I loved all these games, we use to play kick the can and freeze tag all sorts of running games. I also had a pair of stilts that my neighbor gave me from his childhood I spent hours learning to walk on those.

I wish I could get my kids to play more games like these!!

I had a red, white and blue Hula Hoop and loved it! My favorite however was the Chinese Jump Rope. I could not get enough of playing that :)

I am looking into buying a Hula Hoop for workouts. It has weights on it. I figured it would be good to whittle that middle :) Check it out:

Loved hula hooping! I've played all the games mentioned and now I'm feeling really nostalgic. I remember when we were in Arizona, they had a hula hoop contest and I knew I was beyond it by then but my middle daughter, who was 10 at the time, went up there and first time out won the contest! I was so impressed. Now my girls are trying to get me to buy a weighted hoop because it's supposed to help you build your core and tighten up. Heck, I can't use a regular one, why get a weighted on and frustrate myself?

MEMORIES- I used to LOVE to hula hoop, jump rope, baton twirling and hopscotch. My youngest daughter just did the hula hoop for a talent show at school, she had 3 going at once. She was so proud- I remember when I could do the same- how time flies by - now I can only remember- no jumping rope or hopscotching or I would be wetting my pants!!

Yep, I so remember all these - hula hoop, hopscotch, jacks, yoyo's, bike riding, no electronics for my generation! We took baton lessons from age 4 and as we got into Jr high school we marched each parade twice, once with the band, then out and change quickly and marched again with our marching group...what fun!

I loved the hoola hoop. A long time ago, was able to keep 3 up at a time. Not any longer. But thanks for the post it reminded me of a happy childhood memory.

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.

Yes Dutchy you are so right. The new technology age has caused all of us to sit more and move around less...especially outside.

I remember saving rubberbands for chinese jumprope. When I walk my dog and I come across a chalk hopscotch, I can't resist "hopscotching"

Hula hoop, yup I remember those but I never was too good at it either. The Jingle Jump, LOVED them. At that I was rather good, lol.
And the jumping rope, marbles, yoyo, etc. etc. all those toys I loved!

Yes those were the days kids were not as heavy as they are now. Because indeed we had to DO something to make these toys work instead of just sitting on our behind :P

Mikki the thing you strapped to your foot and jumped over was called a "Jingle Jump". I had one of those too. I was never really talented with the hoola hoop either. Jacks and marbles - used to play both. Hopscotch was a big thing too. Now yo-yo's were really popular too and my brother was into doing all the tricks - walk the dog and around the world, there were a whole bunch of them and he thought he was really cool being able to do them. But ladies do you notice something here? Our toys required action on our part and physical participation. We played with our toys not the other way around. We also used our imaginations. If we couldn't afford to buy a chinese jumprope we would make one by tying rubber bands together and make our own.

My daughter in college is into Extreme Hooping! Incredible stuff! Youtube it and watch. No way this booty could do those tricks! I used to love skipping rope and hopscotch!

I loved my baton! I remember marching around for hours making up routines, pretending I was in a parade!

Remembering the hula hoop reminded me of playing jacks. That was before hula hoops. My great granddaughter was here a while back and had a set of jacks. She didn't have a clue what to do with them. I ask her mom (our granddaughter) why she didn't teach her to play jacks and she said she didn't know how either. So down on the kitchen floor I went. Had a ball (no pun intended) until it was time to get up. I think just having great grandchildren has an effect on our abilities to do some things. But Hey, I can still play jacks! Told GGD to get her a baton and I would teach her to twiril. So many things to teach her, so little time.

I loved the hula hoop when much younger. Up to being a teenager. Yes, I think childbearing could effect the ability..LOL
I have a slipped disk in my back now and I wouldn't even take a chance...

Oh my I remember that and the chinese jump rope. And there was something else but I can't remember the name of it. It was a small round yellow hoop that went around your ankle with a long piece of plastic attached that had a red bell shaped cup on the end of that, you would swing it with your ankle round and round and hop over it with your other leg, sort of like jump rope. I sure wish I could remember what that was called, I loved it it was big fun lol
