Just saw a PBS special about this amazing woman.
She had true Farmgirl spirit.
Although she had very abusive childhood and was given away be her mother TWICE, she went on to become a real superstar.
When she was young she learned to shoot and had such innate talent that she became extremely famous, performing in Buffalo Bill's wild west show throughout this country and in Europe.
While still in her teens, she met her husband who truly loved and cherished her although he was 20 years her senior and he was also a marksman of some renown but realized Annie was far better and encouraged her career.
While performing in circuses and vaudeville she became aware of the continuously skantier costumes on the women and made a conscious decision to remain a lady and dressed and acted like a demur lade for her entire career.
I am anxious to read more about her and when I checked the library found about 60 books about Annie Oakely, Most os them juvenile books. Wouldn't it be great if our young girls were exposed to this strong and yet moral and virtuous woman?
Just thought you girls would be interested in a true blue Farmgirl.

Rosemary, I agree. Your drawing is adorable and would make a lovely pillow or embroider it and frame it in weathered barn wood :)

Hey, Lynn,

I had the same exact outfit when I was six. I tried to iron it myself one time in order to wear it somewhere and ruined it and my mom's iron. Boy was she mad! We watched Annie Oakley every week on TV. I thought she was the best.

Michelle....Annie's gravesite is located near State Route 127 North, in the Brock Cemetery near Willodell, Ohio.

I didn't know that Annie died three weeks before her husband and she was creamated and her urn was put in her husband's casket when they buried him.

There is a website that has pictures of her resting place. www.mikeleejohnson.com/annie.html

Hope all this helps. Maybe we'll run into each other there!

Michelle....I'll check into directions to Annie's gravesite with my mom. She'll know. I bought a wonderful picture of Annie at the museum and it proudly hangs on the wall of my sewing room.

Yes, Rosemary, that drawing is definately meant to be embroidered on a pillow or something. I LOVE IT!

Just think years ago we had inspiring and daring women to look up to that beat the odds and had careers way out of the mainstream of life. Sadly our little girls have Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton...sigh

Rosemary, Your drawing is sooooo cute. I agree, it would be a great embroidery project.

Dale Evans! I had a Roy Rogers Ranch. Does that count?

My DeCamp Settlement is just an extension of my childhood. Now if only I could turn IT into a real ranch so I could have MJ style gatherings. Life would be PERFECT!

Great idea Michelle. I need a new embroidery project. Thanks Alee. I'm Mom's third child and there aren't alot of my early art projects around, but I've kept this drawing done on a paper towel! for a long time and I remember doing it.
All you moms...keep your kids art. They'll appreciate it someday.

My sister Ann got to be our Annie Oakly. Me, I was Belle Star. Annie was cute and "good". Belle was ugly and "naughty". But we both learned to shoot.

Debbie,
My sister and I are planning a road trip to Greenville to go to the museum. We have conflicting plans the weekend of the festival. Where is the cemetery? maybe we will also pay our respects.

Ya, the shoes do not go with the outfit, do they? LOL I did get my cowgirl boots, white with gold inlay I might add, a few years later. My mom taught me how to start mums from cuttings. I labored all summer just to get those boots. Sure wish I could find a pair of boots like that now. LOL

Sharon, I had an iron and ironing board too. My doll clothes were the best looking around. LOL I think that was before my Annie Oakley outfit though.

Very cute Lynn Marie!

I never had an Annie Oakley oufit but I do have a picture from when I was a little girl ironing doll clothes with my toy iron/ironing board while wearing my cowgirl outfit :)

I didn't know all that about Annie Oakley. I would love to read up on her more. I did see a movie with Barbara Stanwyck several months ago. Thanks so much for sharing ladies :)

Michele....I think if you "googled" Darke County, Ohio Visitors and Convention Bureau or something like that you'd get a link to the festival. Or maybe upcoming events in Greenville, Ohio. I'm planning on going to the gathering this year. I found out her grave is near where my grandma used to live. So hopefully I can pay my respects.
LynnMarie...if only you could see the outfits I used to wear for those shooting contests. I still think my abilities in those contests help me learn how to shoot varmints that attack out livestock.

I just have to share this photo of me in my Annie Oakley outfit. See...the skirt has her name on it. I guess I was about 8 or 9 at the time. I LOVED her. She was my heroine.

At a local flea market last month, I saw this very outfit. I couldn't believe it!

I saw that special, too. And speaking of 'taking liberties with her character'...I think that was the most impressive thing I learned about her. A malicious rumor about her was spread by a national newspaper and picked up by many others nationwide, so she set about suing each and every one, one by one. She won all the lawsuits she brought. It took, I think, about 10 years of her time. But her reputation meant that much to her. A very strong woman!

From what I've heard about her she spent a lot of time in the woods hunting for food when she was young.A very admirable woman who could outshoot most men!

Jessie Mae,
Yeah, "Annie Get Your Gun" kind of tarted her up a bit. Now, if you wanna talk about Calamity Jane, I think she was a wild one for sure.
Debbie, I would love it if you would email me more info about the festival and museum.

Wow, Michele...your post put to bed a longtime misconception of mine. I always thought Annie Oakley was kind of "trampy." I'm only familiar with her from the musical, especially the song, "Doing What Comes Naturally." Sounds like someone took some unfair liberties with her character!
